The Box

Directed by: Richard Kelly

Cast: Cameron Diaz, James Marsden, Frank Langella

Running Time: 1 hr 55 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: November 6, 2009

Plot: A financially desperate couple (Diaz, Marsden) is randomly presented with a box – inside the box is a simple red button. However, there is a catch – if they press the button, they will be awarded one million dollars. At the same time, someone in the world that they don’t know will be killed.

Who’S It For? Like the title object’s existence, The Box is a film made for the curious: those curious to see how the Donnie Darko director does with a mainstream budget, or those curious to see how the film should be placed in a list of this year’s bad-funny movies. Fans of psychological thrillers might want to take a gander, but at their own risk.

Aliens In The Attic – Blu-Ray Review

Blu-Ray Review

Aliens In The Attic

Directed by: John Schultz

Cast: Carter Jenkins, Austin Robert Butler, Ashley Tisdale, Robert Hoffman, Kevin Nealon, Doris Roberts, Andy Richter

Running Time: 1 hr 28 mins

Rating: PG

Due Out: November 3, 2009

Plot: A quartet of heavily-armed extra-terrestrials come to Earth to retrieve a previously abandoned doomsday machine. Who can stop them? Kids!

Who’S It For? This is the fluffiest and family-friendliest presentation of a possible alien takeover in eons. The tiny green aliens are scary more than ugly, and the overall violence in the film is for the most part slapstick. My dog would probably scamper down to the basement after a couple of loud crashes, but she has always been a wuss.

Movie:

Aliens In The Attic is a movie of shenanigans from start to finish. Before the title becomes relevant, the kids are partaking in rebellious activity, like giving the online school grades »

The Fourth Kind … Fact or Fiction? True or False? It’s Up to You to Decide

6 November 2009 4:29 AM, PST

With The Fourth Kind (starring Milla Jovovich, Elias Koteas and Will Patton) hitting theaters today, many people will be wondering what to make of the supernatural thriller. Well, here’s as much as the creators are willing to spill on the film …

McLaughlin’s review of The Fourth Kind

It’s Up to You to Decide…

In 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters.

The Fourth Kind, abduction, has been the most difficult to document…until now.

Background of the Thriller

In October 2004, filmmaker Olatunde Osunsanmi had wrapped principal photography on his

thriller The Cavern and traveled to North Carolina for postproduction. While there, a chance

dinner conversation sparked an interest that would be the genesis of The Fourth Kind.

A colleague told him of a psychologist living in the Carolinas who relocated from a remote town

along the Bering Sea. In Alaska, she had conducted a sleep »

The Fourth Kind … Fact or Fiction? True or False? It’s Up to You to Decide

Plot: An alleged fact-based film on mysterious disappearances in Nome, Alaska. Abigail Tyler (Jovovich and…Tyler herself?) is a psychoanalyst trying to determine why there are so many similar sleep disturbances in Nome.

Who’S It For? UFOies and conspiracy nuts and the rest of us, as long as we have our trusty grain of salt along for the ride.

Expectations: I thought it would be wildly stupid, because it looked, to me, like a rip off of Paranormal Activity. I was all set to dislike it. Read on for the prize inside!

Scorecard (0-10)

Actors:

Milla Jovovich as Dr. Abigail Tyler: I remember the days when Milla couldn’t act »

Disney’s A Christmas Carol – in 3D

6 November 2009 3:44 AM, PST

Disney’s A Christmas Carol

Directed by: Robert Zemeckis

Cast: Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn, Bob Hoskins

Running Time: 1 hr. 36 mins

Rating: PG

Release Date: November 6, 2009

Plot: Charles Dickens’ classic tale getting another version, this time in 3D. Scrooge (Carrey) is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve in the hopes that the old man can change his nasty ways.

Who’S It For? First and foremost, this is for people who love the story that’s been told many times. For the most part, it stays true to form. Those loving the third dimension will be pleased as well. Parents on the other hand will begin to worry right away when Scrooge removes some coins from a dead man’s eyes.

Expectations: I’ve seen almost every version of this tale and lean toward A Muppet Christmas Carol as my personal fave. Jim Carrey has »

The Men Who Stare At Goats

6 November 2009 3:40 AM, PST

Quickcard Review

Men Who Stare At Goats

Directed by: Grant Heslov

Cast: Ewan McGregor, George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Spacey

Running Time: 1 hr 35 mins

Rating: R

Release Date: November 6, 2009

Plot: Based on the true story by Jon Ronson, it’s a story about a reporter (McGregor) in Iraq who may have just stumbled on the greatest unknown soldier story. Lyn Cassady (Clooney) claims to be a former member of the U.S. Army’s First Earth Battalion, a unit that taps into the paranormal in their missions.

Who’S It For? It’s an adult comedy (without the sex and drugs … well, Ok there’s drugs). The plot sounds like it could be a special effects/superhero movie, it’s not. This is about a journalist who may be hanging out with a crazy man in Iraq.

Overall

Psychic spies. Jedi warriors. These are the military men who sound like »

5 November 2009 2:09 AM, PST

Blu-Ray Review

I Love You, Beth Cooper

Directed by: Chris Columbus

Cast: Paul Rust, Hayden Panettiere, Jack Carpenter, Lauren Storm, Lauren London

Running Time: 1 hr 40 mins

Rating: PG-13

Due Out: November 3, 2009

Plot: A geeky valedictorian (Rust) gets the cojones to tell the most popular girl in school (Panettiere) that he has always loved her. What follows is a night they’ll never forget.

Who’S It For? Enjoying Hayden Panettiere would help when trying to watch this movie. This is the type of high school movie for those who thought John Tucker Must Die deserved a less brutal fate.

Movie:

It is a feat for a film to make its title character so undesirable, but Beth Cooper doesn’t seem to have much difficulty in doing a lot of things wrong. The film is very set on how we should feel about Hayden Panettiere’s character – she’s a goddess on earth, »

This Blu-Ray is especially catered to those who consider themselves already to be reincarnations of Lloyd Dobler or even Diane Court.

Two Girls and a Guy – Blu-Ray Review

Blu-Ray Review

Two Girls and a Guy

Directed by: James Toback

Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Heather Graham, Natasha Gregson Wagner

Running Time: 1 hr 25 mins

Rating: R or Nc-17

Due Out: November 3, 2009

Plot: A man (Downey Jr.) is simultaneously confronted by the two women (Graham, Wagner) he has been seeing at the same time.

Who’S It For? This 1997 indie movie seems to have fallen under the radar in all of its stars’ filmographies. So yes, who is this small moment in everyone’s career for? Heather Graham Collectivists?

Movie:

When asked of his dreams, a neighborly mage once stated with stunning simplicity, “two chicks at the same time.” Two Girls and A Guy has the optional Nc-17 rating and a title that works also as the name for a bland porno, but it is thankfully not the simple realization of a man’s dream to knock boots with two babes. »

Monthly Movie Preview – November 2009 … A Christmas Carol, 2012, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and more

3 November 2009 5:34 AM, PST

It’s the holidays. We know this because the movies tell us so. This year they waited exactly one week after Halloween to start the Christmas fare with Jim Carrey’s A Christmas Carol. But even though the month starts with Christmas, the movie month plays out just like Thanksgiving.

At first, we’re given an array of wonderful treats that’s we’ll happily gobble up like George Clooney in The Men Who Stare at Goats or George Clooney in the stop-motion Wes Anderson movie Fantastic Mr. Fox. Plus, teenage girls and a few others, will have their vampire appetites filled with The Twilight Saga: New Moon. But then, just like Thanksgiving, you gorge a little too much. And even though you’re full, you look around for something more to eat … and that’s when Old Dogs seems to be your only option.

George Clooney considers Alexander Payne’s Descendants

3 November 2009 3:24 AM, PST

George Clooney is busy. Not only is he saving the world … Ok, that’s a slight exaggeration, but he also has tons of films coming out and it’s showing signs of slowing down.

Now comes word from Variety that Clooney is considering the lead in the Alexander Payne family dramedy The Descendants.

You can see him before that in The Men Who Stare as Goats this Friday (Nov. 6) and the upcoming films Fantastic Mr. Fox and Up in the Air.

He’s also currently shooting The American, a thriller directed by Anton Corbijn.

But now back to Descendants … it’s a film about a wealthy man who takes his two daughters on a search for his wife’s lover in hopes of keeping the family together.

The screenplay is written by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash and based on Kaui Hart Hemmings’ debut novel of the same name.

The big guns came out for Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey are executive producers, and when they attach themselves to a project, people listen.

Click Here to read Nick Allen’s review of Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire

But before we get to interviews with them plus the author Sapphire and the film’s cast Mo’ Nique, Gabourey Sidibe and Mariah Carey, let’s talk about this title.

Ok, I get it. You couldn’t call the movie Push, because that title was just used earlier this year in the sci-fi flick starring Dakota Fanning and Chris Evans.

But what’s wrong with calling it Precious and leaving it at that? With the marketing blitz this film is sure to get (from Oprah alone), how many people will only read a title, and strictly base whether they will see »
