'Crazy Heart' review (3.5/5) - The film is nicely shot, with a great soundtrack and a decent script.

Jeff Bridges has been nominated for four Oscars. He's been nominated for four Golden Globes. He's been nominated for four Independent Spirit Awards and three SAG Awards. That's 15 nominations. And he's only won once, the '92 Spirit Award for "American Heart." But it's certainly possible that his status as the Susan Lucci of film awards will change this year, because he's more than assured an Oscar nomination for his role in Scott Cooper's new film "Crazy Heart." It's a terrific performance, and with all that history behind him, well, let's just say he has a shot—or at least a shot glass—at a walk to the podium. Bridges is Bad Blake, a faded country music star with a serious drinking problem. He's resigned himself to a life alone, driving hundreds of miles between crappy gigs in small towns, accompanied only by the bottle he pees in to save time. »
'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus' review (3/5) - The final performance from Heath Ledger.
29 December 2009 8:10 PM, PST
Terry Gilliam has always had a star-crossed career. His magnum opus, "Brazil," was sliced-and-diced and essentially neutered when it hit American shores. The problems he ran into shooting "Man of La Mancha," a film he never finished, have been widely documented. "Tideland," his last film and his most personal movie to date, was (rightly) savaged by critics and ignored by most audiences. And during his latest film, "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," leading man Heath Ledger died during shooting. Of course, that means "Imaginarium" has to be considered with that in mind, doesn't it? Because Gilliam's solution, having Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell to step into Ledger's shoes for various sequences, wasn't a choice borne out of anything but necessity. Essentially, it's a conceit that you have to decide if you're able to forgive as an audience member, but since you know the history behind the film and Ledger's death, »

See the second trailer for Paramount/DreamWorks' "How to Train Your Dragon," featuring the voice talents of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrara, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Craig Ferguson, Kristen Wiig and T.J. Miller. From the studio that brought you “Shrek,” “Madagascar” and “Kung Fu Panda” comes “How To Train Your Dragon” -- an adventure comedy set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, based on the book by Cressida Cowell. The story centers around a Viking teenager, who lives on the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. Initiation is coming, and this is his one chance to prove his worthiness to his tribe and father. But when he encounters, and ultimately befriends, an injured dragon, his world is turned upside down »
'Cop Out' trailer - What were you thinking Bruce?
29 December 2009 4:14 PM, PST
As most of you know, the new 'Cop Out' trailer has been released. Kevin Smith's formerly titled "A Couple of Dicks" trailered prior to showings of Warners' successful "Sherlock Holmes" and, in all honesty, I'd rather watch a prawn eat catfood a dozen times on DVD. Still, there are a few entertaining moments to be found. Check it out and see what you think. Willis teams with Tracy Morgan and Seann William Scott in the cop comedy actioner but there's as much partner chemistry as a chewing gum stuck on a sneaker here. I love Kevin Smith's films for the most part, so I'll be watching this one and, will probably end up liking it. The story tells of two cops who must track down a stole baseball card, rescue beautiful Mexican woman and also deal with gangster and the laundering of drug money »
Kevin Smith's 'A Couple of Dicks' now called 'Cop Out'
28 December 2009 5:36 PM, PST
Kevin Smith's comedy "A Couple of Dicks" has now been titled as "Cop Out." Personally, I think the former title is more like Kevin Smith's slap-in-the-face-style than the latter. Smith revealed the new name of the Warner Bros. Pictures' release prior to the "Cop Out" trailer beginning its debut in front of "Sherlock Holmes." According to sources, Smith told Entertainment Weekly that the key reason for the switch was that the studio wanted to advertise "Cop Out" on sports programs, however the major networks noted that they couldn't run adverts before 9 p.m. if the film kept the "A Couple of Dicks" title. "Cop Out" is se to open in February next year and stars Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan, Seann William Scott, Adam Brody, Jason Lee and Michelle Trachtenberg. Marc Platt produces with Polly Johnsen and Michael Tadross. Robb and Marc Cullen wrote the screenplay which tells »
Adler and McCarthy for "Night and Fog"
28 December 2009 4:52 PM, PST
"Night and Fog" from publisher Studio 407 has been optioned by producers Gil Adler and Shane McCarthy. Studio 407's Alex Leung also produces. The sci-fi horror comicbook is set during WWII and tells of an infectious mist unleashed on a military base. This transforms its victims into preternatural creatures of the night. Survivors efforts to slay them are fruitless as they adapt, changing into something even more terrifying and unstoppable than before. Adler and McCarthy are also joining along with Eric Eisner to produce the adaptation of "Havana Nocturne." »
