Comic Preview: The Darkness #6
10 October 2008 6:11 AM, PDT
The 'Empire' story-arc in Top Cow's The Darkness comic book is coming to an end, and we've got a six page preview of it right here!
Issues #6 of The Darkness will be in comic book stores across the nation on October 15th. The comic also features two different covers: one by Stjepan Sejic, the other by Dale Keown.
The smashing conclusion of the "Empire" storyarc is here, as Jackie Estacado faces off against a foe that is pure evil incarnate. Matching brains and brawn against this formidable enemy will test Jackie's strength, acumen and resolve as it becomes clear to him that The Darkness power is more than just a sinister force – it is an agent of rage-filled destruction hell-bent on ridding itself of Jackie once and for all. Writer Phil Hester (Superman: Confidential, Green Arrow) and rising star Michael Broussard (Unholy Union) put the stamp on their momentous first arc on The Darkness.

Introducing Fangoria Graphix!
10 October 2008 2:13 AM, PDT
The folks behind the now-defunct Fangoria Comics line have reunited to give it a go one more time, this time under the banner of Fangoria Graphix, according to a new blog posted on Fango’s MySpace page.
Troy Brownfield has been assigned the post of Associate Editor for the new line, which will be run by Scott Licina, Jason Moser and James Zahn. They’ll be releasing the Bump and Strangeland: Seven Sins series as well as some new titles like Ellium and Death Walks the Streets. They’re also planning on a series of novels, downloadable comics and a lot more.
Of course this isn’t the first time big plans have been announced, so we’ll have to wait and see how much of it comes to fruition before we get too excited. And in case you’re wondering, this does not mean the dissolution of Scream Factory,

Evans Set for Lead in Dread
10 October 2008 1:23 AM, PDT
This morning Styd has learned that the pivotal role of Quaid for Anthony Diblasi’s upcoming Dread, the adaptation of the Clive Barker short story, has finally been filled.
Taking on the role of the paranoid young man searching for answers as to the nature of fear in all the wrong places will be Shaun Evans, a relative newcomer whom you might’ve seen in such films as Being Julia, Boy A or Frozen Time, if such films are the sort that show up on your radar.
Shooting on Dread is expected to start this month in the UK, so expect to be hearing and seeing a lot more from it very soon.

ABC Preps New V
10 October 2008 12:59 AM, PDT
Yeah, yeah, I guess you could say that “V” is about as sci-fi as you can get, but ask anyone who watched the original mini-series on TV when they were a kid, like I did, and you’ll understand why it’s got horror cred. Fucking freaky lizard people, man!
Sci Fi Wire is reporting that ABC is moving forward on the long-discussed reboot of the “V” series, with the allegory of Nazis and the Holocaust being replaced by a more general theme of what happens when citizens have blind faith in their leaders. HD Films' Jace Hall is producing alongside “The 4400” co-creator Scott Peters, who wrote the first “V” films and helped with the TV series.
The new “V” will focus on a Homeland Security officer named Erica Evans, whose directionless son jumps at the chance to help our new alien friends, causing all sorts of familial tension.

Orphanage Director Gets Hater Gig
10 October 2008 12:31 AM, PDT
Good news today for those of you waiting for more information on the Guillermo del Toro-produced adaptation of David Moody’s novel Hater; Universal has brought on The Orphanage helmer Juan Antonio Bayona to direct the film, according to Variety.
That’s good news for Orphanage fans as well, since I’m sure most of you have been wondering what he’d get his hands on next. Hater tells the story of an epidemic of violence that sweeps across the world, perpetrated by the most average of citizens.
"I like the idea of a movie that talks about the state of fear we live in nowadays," Bayone told the trade. Indeed the young director seems like a great choice to me, though the subject matter between this and his debut couldn’t be more different. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

Brolin Close to Jonah Hex Deal
10 October 2008 12:18 AM, PDT
Word has come down via Variety this morning that Josh Brolin is in talks to take on the title role in Warner Bros. upcoming adaptation of the DC comic Jonah Hex, the script for which was penned by the Crank team of Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine. The duo will also direct.
The 1970’s comic followed the exploits of a disfigured gunslinger and bounty hunter who got into all sorts of terrible trouble during the Old West. Brolin is a great choice for the role, being one of the more versatile actors working today. He’ll next be seen as George W. Bush in Oliver Stone’s W.
We’ll keep an eye on this one as always and let you know when a final deal is settled on! Jonah Hex is being co-produced by Akiva Goldsman, who's also behind the upcoming unnecessary I Am Legend prequel.

New Twilight Pics and Trailer Tonight!
9 October 2008 9:55 AM, PDT
I will admit it right now ... I will be seeing Twilight. On one hand it will please the woman of the hour, and on the other it will arm me with plenty of ammunition for our inevitable Dinner for Fiends. We suffer for our craft.
For those who do enjoy the books and look forward to the film, we have two new stills from the Catherine Hardwicke directed vampire love story and a special widget! There will also be a new trailer premiering this evening on Entertainment Tonight. The new promo will also be available on the widget at 8Pm Pt and then an hour later at Twilight's MySpace page.
No doubt there are some out there asking, "Syxx, where can I have an intelligent discussion about this movie and also post pictures of my pets and fanfiction?" That, my friends, is what Twilight's IMDb entry is for.

Buzzington Checks Into New Terminal Hotel
9 October 2008 4:57 AM, PDT
This morning we received word that genre actor Ezra Buzzington (The Hills Have Eyes, Mirrors) has just joined up with former Fright Night sidekick Stephen Geoffreys and Dread Central’s most favorite girl ever, Tiffany Shepis, for a role in B.C. Furtney’s New Terminal Hotel.
The role sounds to be a pretty despicable one, all things considered; Buzzington will fill the shoes of “Spitz”, a wheelchair-bound child pornographer who is a resident of the titular hotel and friend of Geoffreys’ character.
"I get why Spitz is into the terrible shit he's into," Buzzington said in a press release. "He's trapped in an act not of his own design so he takes his aggressions and frustrations out on the most innocent source he can find. He's kind of a sick fuck. And those are always the most fun to play."
New Terminal Hotel tells of a man (Geoffreys) driven insane

Shankland's The Children Site Live
9 October 2008 1:58 AM, PDT
Just the other day we pointed out the first tease for Tom Shankland’s follow-up to Waz, the killer kid flick The Children. Now the updates are coming fast and loose, and there’s even more to tell you guys about!
The boys at Quiet Earth found the official Children website is now active, complete with a slew of stills like the one you see here (though in the wrong aspect ratio for some reason) and a brand-new teaser that, while pretty cool, doesn’t tell us much more than the first one did.
The Children tells of a Christmas vacation gone very, very wrong; two families get together to celebrate the holidays, but their relaxing weekend turns into a nightmare as one by one their kids fall ill and turn against their parental units. Patricide, matricide and other underused crimes soon follow!

Official Site, Cannibal Pics for The Road
9 October 2008 1:42 AM, PDT
Normally the launch of a film’s official site comes with, at the very least, some early production artwork. Such is not the case for The Road, John Hilcoat’s adaptation of the Cormac McCarthy novel, but more has been found that should make up for its lack of content.
Quiet Earth discovered a slew of behind-the-scenes pics from The Road over on the personal website of actor Jeremy Ambler, who plays one of the cannibals in the film. If you have reason to question their legitimacy, look no further than the pic of Ambler with Road star Viggo Mortensen.
Check out The Road’s official site for a splash page, and dig the rest of the behind the scenes pics right here! The Road opens in select cities on November 14th and goes wide on November 26th.

Upcoming Sci-Fi Channel Cinematic Greatness
9 October 2008 1:26 AM, PDT
Rag on Sci-Fi Channel original movies all you want - I know I often do; but somebody (besides me) must be tuning in given how much they keep on cranking them out. As a matter of fact, the ratings for these films are steadily increasing. Sci-Fi plans for 36 news films in 2009, and today we're getting a taste of things to come.
The Hollywood Reporter put out a story about the ongoing working arrangement among the Sci-Fi Channel, distribution company Rhi Entertainment, and production company Muse Entertainment. The three newest monster fruits of their creative loins are:
Sand Serpents: Jason "Iron Eagle" Gedrick stars in this monster movie about American combat soldiers in the Afghan desert who battle the Taliban and a horde of giant carnivorous serpents.
Alien Western: An Old West town in the 1890s is the battleground where monstrous buglike machines from another world stage their invasion.
Carney: Based on the Jersey Devil legend,

Pain & Suffering Await at Blackwater Farm
9 October 2008 12:41 AM, PDT
God bless the American Film Market website! As next month's Afm continues to take shape, I keep coming across interesting listings for movies we have to look forward to in the year to come. Today's entry is Blackwater Farm, and on this farm the primary crop is torture porn.
Details on Blackwater Farm are quite limited as of right now. You won't even find a listing on IMDb. I was able to dig up a synopsis and a trailer for the low budget fright flick at the website of distributor Karma Enterprises:
"In the tradition of Hostel and Saw comes a psychological thriller/horror when Laura and her friends take a wrong turn and end up at Blackwater Farm, where they are confronted by the eccentric owner who traps them in his maze-like mill and begins his bloody games of torture. As Laura struggles to save her friends from a fate worse than death,

IFC Acquires U.S. Rights for Sauna
9 October 2008 12:32 AM, PDT
Though it’s one of those films that sounds exceedingly difficult to describe without having seen it, which I have not, that still hasn’t stopped Aj Annila’s Sauna from getting buzz all over the festival world. Today that buzz has culminated in the Variety announcement that IFC Entertainment has acquired the rights to Sauna for the U.S.
The trade reports that their only plan right now is to release the Finnish tale of sins and redemption as part of their IFC Festival Direct on-demand platform, but chances are a DVD release, at the very least, will follow soon after.
Sauna is set in the 1500’s and finds two brothers, one full of rage and one a quiet scholar, who are tasked with representing Finland in a meeting with Russia to draw up new borders both sides can agree on at the conclusion of a lengthy war. After
