Well I have to admit, I'm a little surprised by the results of last week's poll. Although Angelina Jolie has probably starred in the most high-profile female action roles over the past few years, I really didn't think she would top Milla Jovovich as the number 1 female action star currently working today. As it turns out, Film Junk readers voted Jolie #1 and Jovovich #2, although they weren't all that far apart. The next closest vote-getter was Uma Thurman, followed by Kate Beckinsale and a two-way tie between Summer Glau and Zoe Bell. Asian action stars apparently don't cut it for Fj readers, but I honestly thought Chocolate star Yanin Vismistananda would get a little more love from the hardcore martial arts fans. Do you agree with these results? Would the addition of any other names have changed the outcome of this poll? 1. Angelina Jolie -- 23.6% 2. Milla Jovovich -- 20.9% 3. Uma Thurman -- »

Hot desert, sweaty chicks, guns, explosions and fist fights...how can you go wrong? Freestyle releasing has given Rick Jacobson's Bitch Slap a January 8th limited theatrical release, which would put this action-packed genre pic toe-to-toe with Lionsgate's Daybreakers. As proven this year, two genre films arriving on the same day is never good. Starring the beautiful Julia Voth, Erin Cummings, Ameríca Olivo and Lucy Lawless, the film features fight sequences by Quentin Tarantino regular Zoe Bell. The film premiered at this fall's "Midnight Madness" portion of the Tiff. Check out the new trailer below. At its core, Bitch Slap follows three bad girls (a down-and-out stripper, a drug-running killer and a corporate powerbroker) as they arrive at a remote desert hideaway to extort and steal $200 Million in diamonds from a ruthless underworld kingpin....More »

11/17 ~ Todays special boys and girls. Are you one of them?
Mischa, Marty and Rachel
1897 Frank Fay, aka Mr. Barbara Stanwyck. The theory goes that their troubled marriage was the basis of A Star is Born. That story is so big it's practically it's own franchise. I can't stop thinking about it today: Stanwyck through the lens of Gaynor, Garland, Streisand. Yummy!) Even if it's only an urban La legend, I love to think about it. Fay, a popular comedic actor, was also the originator of the Harvey role (on stage) before Jimmy Stewart got to it.
1901 Lee Strasberg, the hugely influential acting teacher that helped popularize "The Method" Students included... well, basically a whose who of late 40s / early 50s giants of the silver screen.
1905 Mischa Auer, very tall actor of oversized comic turns. You'll remember him from the blissfully funny My Man Godfrey and best picture winner You Can't Take It With You »

King of New York fans will be disappointed to find out that Abel Ferrara has backed out of directing the action flick Game of Death. The film was supposed to mark the reunion of Ferrara with his King of New York cast member, Wesley Snipes, but for unknown reasons Ferrara has stepped aside. Game of Death focuses on a diplomat.s bodyguard (Snipes) injured during an assassination attempt. After the incident, everyone is taken to the hospital where this bodyguard meets a nurse played by Zoe Bell. Together they try to protect the diplomat from a gang of assassins led by Gary Daniels as a guy named Zander. Movie Hole says Giorgio Serafini will take Ferrara.s place. Scratch that, actually Mh says Georgio Serafini will direct, but I assume they are referring to Italian director Giorgio Serafini. If so, little is known of his work Stateside since his resume »

An accomplished stunt performer whose journey to Kill Bill was chronicled as the subject of the excellent documentary Double Dare, Zoe Bell has become a fixture in genre fare not only for her impressive stunt skills - but also her acting chops.
After a leading role in the Grindhouse installment Death Proof, Bell's recent work includes Bitch Slap (screening at our Trinity Of Terrors this weekend), a starring turn in Angel Of Death, and the most recent Tarantino effort Inglourious Basterds. Jason Anders recently sat down with bell for a discussion about her craft.
Ja: Let's start off with talking about the film Death Proof, and your initial reaction to the script by Quentin Tarantino which had you playing yourself. You originally thought this was a joke, right? Zb: Well no, I didn't think the movie was a joke. He was on his way over to my house with the script, »

A dirty Charlize Theron in head-to-toe leather? Sure, why not? When she’s dirty she wins Oscars, when she’s in tight leather….she’s in tight leather. George Miller also sees it as win-win because he is going after the A-lister to be the female lead in his next installment in the “Mad Max” series, which would be the first in almost 25 years. Click the jump to hear what’s going on beyond the thunderdome.
It had been reported before that Miller was looking to revisit the Mad Max character, but was pretty sure it would move forward without original star Mel Gibson in the lead role. He has since shown interest in U.K. actor Tom Hardy, who has left a pretty powerful impression on viewers as the lead in the violent action-biography “Bronson,” to take over as Max. However, neither Hardy nor Theron have received any formal offer for the roles. »

In the Robert Rodriguez-scripted/directed first of its two conjoined movies, Grindhouse is the ultimate sugar rush for horror fans, a high-calorie, low-nutrition blast of cheap thrills wrought on a big budget. In the second, Quentin Tarantino upends the framework and traditions of exploitation fare to craft a film that’s just as much a showcase for his gift of (writing) gab as it is for action. And in both Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof, a love and respect shines through for the B-movie tradition that too many others “homage” with snarky irony. The wholeheartedness with which they express their devotion to the form almost amounts to a kind of innocence, and for all the explicit mayhem on screen, »

Have a look at which are coming, and find out how being a screenwriter can get you out of sticky situations.

• I mentioned back in June how, not to be outdone by Tokyo's life-size Gundam, Kobe decided to build a life-size replica of Gigantor (better known there as Tetsujin 28-go). The 60-feet tall statue was finally completed last week, and unlike the life-size Gundam—which has now been dismantled—the life-size Gigantor is a permanent fixture in Kobe's Wakamatsu Park.

Rhianwen Benner: It's a "girl power" flick that's long on entertainment but comes up empty in the empowerment department.
The Lowdown
Ellen Page stars as an underage Texas teenager feeling pressure from her mother (Marcia Gay Harden) to become a beauty queen when a chance trip to a roller derby changes her destiny.
Why You'll Love It
The cast is great. Besides Page, there's Kristen Wiig, Eve, Zoe Bell, Andrew Wilson, and Drew Barrymore, who pulls double duty as director. Everyone gets laughs, particularly Wiig during a monologue describing the origin of her case of crabs (you'll die laughing, until you realize your kids are right there too).
While roller derby isn't all that suspenseful of a sport -- the point of the game, after all, is to skate in circles -- it's definitely fun to watch. Things get rough and tumble, and there are unexpectedly fun moments when the team gets experimental with strategy. »

I woke up Sunday morning, slid into my skinny jeans, a low-cut, tight black shirt, and stilettos; and slipped on a pair of shades. There's something about going to visit the set of a series that has been labeled "slick," "sexy," and "dangerous" that just makes a gal want to look good...even at 7:00 a.m. And just why was I dragging myself out of bed at such a god-awful hour on a weekend? To get a first-hand glimpse of the shooting of The Bannen Way, the highly anticipated new web series from Sony Pictures Television set to debut on Crackle.com this January. In case you missed the story: Jesse Warren and Mark Gantt debuted the trailer last August, the cybersphere went wild over the racy action series, Icm signed the duo and then Sony snatched up the project based on the strength of the trailer and the scripts the pair had written. »

Don't call it a comeback for Wesley Snipes and director Abel Ferrara, they've been here for years. Of course, it's been a long time since they've been at the top of their games -- notably in 1990, when they teamed up to deliver the cult hit King of New York. Since then they've chosen different paths. Snipes went on to become a major action star of the 90s (and beyond) with films such as Passenger 57, The Fan and the Blade trilogy. He's been off his game since about 2005 due to some off-camera tax problems. Ferrara, on the other hand, has been off his game for much longer than that. He followed King of New York with several solid efforst over the next four years, including Bad Lieutenent, a not quite awesome horror remake Bodysnatchers and the Harvel Keitel and Madonna led pic Dangerous Game. But he's been far from the spotlight ever since. Perhaps »

Wesley Snipes will join Bad Lieutenant director Abel Ferrara for Game of Death, a film which likely has nothing at all to do with the Bruce Lee film of the same name.
Snipes, who seemed to be at a high a few years ago with a starring role in Blade Trinity, was last seen in the direct to video Art of War II: Betrayal. His career has been rocked by a three-year prison sentence for tax evasion, and he needs a film to get him back on track. Since the details regarding Game of Death’s plot are sparse, it’s hard to tell if this is the one that’ll do the trick. Snipes will simply play “a politician’s bodyguard who must fend off five of the world’s top assassins.”

Despite tax troubles and a stint mostly doing straight-to-video action guff, Wesley Snipes can still count on some contacts - like Abel Ferrara. The director has cast Snipes in his new thriller Game Of Death, which sees the pair working together for the first time since 1990's King Of New York. In the film, Snipes will play a politician's bodyguard, who must stop five of the world's best assassins from taking out his boss. Zoe Bell and Robert Davi are also in the cast and Ferrara started shooting this week in...

It's a while since we've heard anything from maverick director Abel Ferrara. There have been documentaries and below-the-radar features in the last few years, but his highest profile moment lately was probably his attempted Cannes spat with Werner Herzog (where Ferrara wished death on those involved with the new Bad Lieutenant, and Herzog was delighted and offered to go drinking wth him). But Ferrara appears to be flirting with the mainstream for a change, as this week sees the start of shooting on the action thriller Game of Death, reuniting the director with star Wesley Snipes. Similarities with the ropey posthumous Bruce Lee film from 1978 end at the title: Variety describes the plot as involving "a politician's bodyguard who must fend off five of the world's top assassins". Zoe Bell and Robert Davi are co-starring. Sounds interchangeable with any one of Snipes' recent straight-to-dvd efforts, which makes the involvement of Ferrara puzzling. »
