Maria Heiskanen in Everlasting Moments European Film Awards 2009 – Nominations: Part I Among the eligible films and performers that failed to nab a mention were Giovanna Mezzogiorno for Vincere, Audrey Tautou for Coco Before Chanel, Maren Ade’s Everyone Else, Ulrich Tukur for The White Ribbon, Martina Gedeck for The Baader Meinhof Complex, and Michael Fassbender for Fish Tank. Also, Christian Petzold’s Jerichow, Nina Hoss for Jerichow, Jan Troell’s Everlasting Moments, Maria Heiskanen for Everlasting Moments, Corneliu Porumboiu’s Police, Adjective, Andrzej Wajda’s Sweet Rush, and Philippe Lioret’s Welcome. Now, the curious thing about the European Film Awards is that the awards’ timing and eligibility rules (some of which have varied throughout the years) make many of the nominations seem like old news. Indeed, [...] »

On Thursday, Oscar voters received the second, third and fourth DVD screeners sent to the full academy — all three from Sony Pictures Classics, which thus becomes the first major studio out of the gate: "Coco Before Chanel," "The Damned United" and "Whatever Works." Other Spc screeners ("An Education," "The Last Station," "Broken Embraces," "White Ribbon") will be sent later in derby season, a studio rep promises. "A Prophet" is eligible only in the race for best foreign-language film, which requires theatrical screenings, so DVDs of that will not be shipped. The only previous DVD sent to all academy members was "Anvil! The Story of Anvil." Some bloggers reported that "The Messenger" was also sent, but that's not true. At least not yet. It was sent to journalists, but a copy won't be shipped to academy members for another week or so. Economic hard times may severely limit the number of »

Starring Audrey Tautou, Alessandro Nivola, and Benoît Poelvoorde
Directed by Anne Fontaine
Rated PG-13
In her performance as Coco Chanel, you can see the wheels turning with Audrey Tautou, the gamine French actress who made such an indelible mark on audiences eight years ago in Amélie. That's not to say you can see her acting. For a recent example, watch Hilary Swank in another bio-pic about an important woman from the first half of the 20th century.
With Tautou, as it perhaps was with Chanel, you can see her navigating the chess pieces, from the clothes to the actors. The portrayal is vastly different from Amélie, a determination for herself and for those around her.
However, this is called Coco Avant Chanel, so the arc of the story leads up to Chanel's great success, so the determination Coco sees is probably far different here than it would »

Coco Chanel is a name synonymous with a classic style, of simple lines and comfortable fit but not always for everyone. Such is the film Coco Before Chanel, a biopic by Anne Fontaine based on the book Chanel and Her World: Friends, Fashions, and Fame by Coco's official biographer Edmonde Charles-Roux. Fontaine's film is less about the events of Chanel's life and more a window into the provincial beginning and formative years of a woman who defied standards and became an internationally known icon.
Young Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel and her sister were abandoned in an orphanage after the death of their mother. As young women, the Chanel sisters become chanteuses in provincial France. While working as a part-time seamstress, Coco (Audrey Tautou) meets and becomes the courtesan of millionaire playboy Balsan, devilishly played by Benoît Poelvoorde. She moves into his country house, where she hides from his guests at the request of the baron. »

You can really tell that the holiday season is coming by the commercials you see on TV. I'm not just talking about the Norelco sled in the snow or the K-Mart layaway pitches. I'm talking about the high end, classy jewelry and perfume commercials that are there to give guys ideas about what to give their spouses.
One of the most beautiful perfume ads I've seen in a long time has been getting a lot of exposure lately. It's for Chanel N°5 with the French actress Audrey Tautou. You probably have seen it, but might remember it more if I tell you about the music. It's a very soulful, bluesy rendition of "I'm A Fool To Want You."

“It’s not a fashion film!” exclaimed Audrey Tautou before the New York premiere of her latest film, Coco Before Chanel, earlier this month. Coco Before Chanel is a film about the woman rather than the label. The movie’s extraordinary wardrobe simply enhances its actual characters, rendering Coco and her entourage in a tangible, three-dimensional way. But that doesn't mean I didn't covet her outfits. Aside from a few vintage items and an actual Chanel suit, everything Tautou wears on camera is the product of the imagination of Catherine Leterrier, the film’s wardrobe director, who sketched and then commissioned each individual ensemble, down to the shoes. Countless headpieces (including oversized hats for more than 700 female extras) were created by famed milliner Stephen Jones. Leterrier revealed to Vf Daily that the rigorous, four-month fitting process was meticulously photographed in order to document the evolution of the character. If something »

The struggle from small beginnings to vibrant and wonderful successes always end up being the most appealing stories to become the newest biopics. Coco Avant Chanel, or its working USA title Coco Before Chanel, is no exception to the rule. Using a different turn on the famous fashion designer’s life, the cast and crew of this particular project tells her story in a beautiful yet empowering way.
Although no biographical picture is a hundred percent true to what happened in a person’s life, they still follow the main timeline as closely as possible. The story brings you on the steady ride through Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel’s (Audrey Tautou) life from when she was a child to her time participating in the long love affair with French playboy Étienne Balsan (Benoît Poelvoorde). A love triangle begins to emerge between Balsan and his good friend Arthur “Boy” Capel (Alessandro Nivola »

We love a little film-inspired fashion, anything from Sex and The City's floral prints to Audrey Tautou’s effortless-looking style in Coco Before Chanel. But now Opening Ceremony is launching looks inspired by Where the Wild Things Are and I don't think beastly chic is gonna take off. The cuddly creations, made in collaboration with director Spike Jonze, include this crazy faux fur dress priced at $460, and these $610 jumpsuits with ears and tails. Still, the bird-inspired coat is much more wearable than Malvin’s chicken-and-egg dress on Project Runway. Think these looks are fashion-forward or just a furry faux pas? »

The Box-Office Top Five
#1 "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" ($24.6 million)
#2 "Surrogates" ($15 million)
#3 "Fame" ($10 million)
#4 "The Informant!" ($6.9 million)
#5 "Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself" ($4.8 million)
Who needs a world where human beings can exist vicariously through robots when there's a sky filled with meatballs to enjoy? Moviegoers decisively chose the delicious rain shower, as "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" dominated the box office for the second weekend in a row with a $24.6 million intake, only $6 million less than what it made during its debut weekend.
While the folks at Sony Pictures Animation have plenty of reasons to celebrate, the outcome is significantly more "cloudy" for "Surrogates," Disney's Bruce Willis-starring science-fiction flick, which earned only $15 million. Based on the Top Shelf »

Seconds, anyone? Eating up $24.6 million worth of tickets, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs defied box office gravity by falling a minuscule 19 percent to win the top spot yet again. The CG family film capitalized on good buzz and a lack of kid-friendly fare in theaters to best three new wide releases, raising its total gross to $60 million. In a distant second place, Surrogates, starring Bruce Willis as an FBI agent in a futuristic world, opened to $15 million. That's a middling bow for a headliner like Willis, but the Die Hard star can hardly be blamed: His image was totally »

Today, as the film "Coco Before Chanel" is released, movie-goers will be treated to an inside, cinematic look at the person of Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel before she was the infamous French fashion designer, still worshipped even today. But even for the film's stars, the backstory of the woman who grew up in a broken home, poor, who latched herself to a rich man (Étienne Balsan, played by Benoît Poelvoorde) as a mistress -- the experience was truly eye-opening. French actress Audrey Tautou, who still enjoys fame in America for her roles in 2001's "Amelie" and 2006's "The Da Vinci Code,"... »

After watching the "gay exorcism" kid on Tyra, aren't you ready to turn off the TV and see what's going on at the movies? Heaven knows, I am!
The week's big opener is, of course, the remake of Fame, featuring a cast of talented youngsters that's way more shiny, happy and generally well-scrubbed than their grittier 1980 counterparts.
That would be Ok if this new movie were a tenth as engaging or well-written as the first one, but alas, it ain't. Even the few standout musical numbers aren't rousing enough to put over the rest of this lead balloon. (Read AfterElton.com's review here.)
That we've gone from the New York City High School of Performing Arts apparently having but one gay student (yeah, right) in '80 to one exceedingly gay-vague dancer boy doesn't feel like all that much progress, either.
And how can you put Kelsey Grammer and Bebe Neuwirth, »

If beauty is clarity, then Audrey Tautou might be our Helen of Troy. Her face–especially her dark, cartoonishly clear eyes–seems to register in finer focus than the rest of the world, and seeing her in person is like putting on reading glasses for the first time. It's obvious why Jean-Pierre Jeunet's camera stayed adoringly glued to her in Amélie.
As you've probably heard, Tautou's latest role is much less winsome. In Coco Before Chanel, which was released today, she plays the iconic French designer, who was the opposite of transparent. Born in southern France, she grew up an orphan. »

European biopics have a tendency to attribute all of a person’s accomplishments and failures to the tribulations of their Dickensian childhoods. Or maybe European filmmakers tend to only make biopics about figures who pulled themselves up by their tattered bootstraps from orphanages, cabarets, and other belle époque waif dens. That’s why Coco Before Chanel will seem so familiar to you, especially if you’ve seen La Vie En Rose, about Edith Piaf. Perennial gamine Audrey Tautou (Amélie) plays the legendary couturiere in Anne Fontaine's film. Her performance will inevitably be compared to Marion Cotillard's Oscar-winning turn as Piaf, who, like Chanel, was an orphan who became a French icon. The juxtaposition is unfair, since Piaf's passion and tragedy makes for a more resonant role than Chanel's poise; nonetheless, Tautou acquits herself well, trading in her trademark dimples for sullen, hollow cheeks. (Fontaine's straightforward direction, meanwhile, is »
