Shazam Writer Talks Latest Script Draft

11 November 2009 10:21 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Back in August we told you that writer/actor Bill Burch was teaming with red-hot comic book scribe Geoff Johns to work on a script for the long-delayed adaptation of DC ComicsShazam! Well, MTV recently checked back in with Burch to see how the script was coming along and Burch was kind enough to drop some details about the direction he and Johns are going with Shazam and what fans should and Should Not expect from the movie.

Also in discussion: the likelihood that we’ll see Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson actually donning the black and gold garb of Captain Marvel’s arch nemesis, Black Adam.

A few things upfront: As of now it’s looking like Get Smart director Peter Segal is still attached to direct Shazam - Segal was linked to the project when it reportedly stalled while in development early this year. However, that D.O. »

Bill Birch and Geoff Johns "Starting Fresh" With Shazam! Adaptation

11 November 2009 1:12 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

When young Billy Batson says "Shazam," he transforms into the adult superhero Captain Marvel. The character is nearly as old — and as powerful — as DC Comics' premiere hero, Superman. Yet, he's had far less exposure than the Man of Steel. In fact, most people who recognize Captain Marvel think his name is actually the magic word he says to access his powers. This name confusion stems partially from the fact that DC Comics is forced to market Captain Marvel under the name Shazam! because Marvel Comics owns the rights to the name.

Captain Marvel has appeared in film serials, a live-action TV show, and several cartoon series. There's also long been talk of adapting the comic book into a live-action movie along the lines of Big meets Superman. New Line Cinema had been working on an adaptation but when it folded, the scripter of the intended adaptation, John August »

'Paranormal Activity' Could Get A Sequel But 'District 9' Might Not In Today's Dailies -- 11/3/09

--Paramount is actively working on plans for a "Paranormal Activity" sequel. While a sequel would clearly lose the surprise factor that's made the Oren Peli-directed horror film such a success, folks behind the film insist that they can "come up with the right creative and marketing approach." (THR)

--On the flip side, studio heads at Sony are hoping that Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp are up for a "District 9" sequel, but the producer-director pair is allegedly holding off until they "figure out what the story is and organize their respective schedules." Sony's hopes are hardly surprising as "District 9" has officially crossed the $200 million threshold, a fantastic result based on the movie's $30 million budget. (Deadline Hollywood Daily)

Morgan Freeman to Star in, Produce ‘Dirty Old Men’

3 November 2009 4:37 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Morgan Freeman has signed on to star in the Warner Bros. comedy Dirty Old Men (working title).

In the film, Freeman will be playing the best friend and wingman of an aging playboy who finally meets the love of his life. After spending 40 years by his friend’s side, Freeman’s character isn’t too willing to give up his position, and does everything he can to try to break up the new couple.

The film was written by comic writers Josh Cagan and Greg Coolidge, and the comedic style of Dirty Old Men is said to be along the lines of that in Wedding Crashers and The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

No actor is attached to the film to play the part of the playboy, but Warner Bros. is interested in having Jack Nicholson fill the role. Nicholson and Freeman co-starred in the 2007 Warner Bros. film The Bucket List, and the »

According to the actor, Willis plays the man who hires Stallone and his titular team for "a death-defying mission," but there's another operative that could take on the job — none other than Stallone's longtime rival, played by Schwarzenegger. "I talked about this scene with these guys for a long time, but I never thought it would come to fruition," said Stallone. (PopWatch)

--NBC is going from "Heroes" to "Zeroes" in an all-new television project from "Crank" duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. Live-Action ‘Jetsons’ Movie Gets ‘Smart’ New Director

2 November 2009 11:32 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

How did this news slip past us all? According to a source that the guys over at Pajiba have, Robert Rodriguez won’t be directing the long in-development live-action Jetsons movie. It was only this summer that we got word that The Jetsons was firmly on its way, with an early draft of the script having been written, and Rodriguez himself sounding enthusiastic after he said he’s been working on ideas for the adaptation for a long time.

However, Rodriguez has his fingers in a lot of pies right about now: He has his full-length Machete movie (currently in the editing stages); he’s heavily involved in the Predators reboot; apparently he has Spy Kids 4 in the works (it was only a matter of time…); and, of course, there’s the much-anticipated, long gestating Sin City 2 (which could be filming next year, last we heard). So it’s kind of understandable, »

Warner Bros. Picks Up Dirty Old Men

2 November 2009 11:07 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

The good folks over at Warner Brothers have picked up a new spec comedy script by writers Josh Cagan and Greg Coolidge, titled Dirty Old Men. The script centers around two old "players", one of which has finally met the love of his life, and the other, his best friend and wingman for the past 40 years, who is determined to break the relationship up at any cost. So, just another comedy script, eh? No sir! The flick so far has the ever busy and always entertaining Morgan Freeman attached to play the role of the wingman, and currently Warners are shooting for a reunion between Freeman and Jack Nicholson, his co-star of the 2007 comedy The Bucket List (which had the two playing a couple of old geezers trying to fulfill a list of their dreams before they kicked the bucket). Nicholson isn't the only one in demand though; the director »

Morgan Freeman Wants To Be a 'Dirty Old Man'

2 November 2009 9:48 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

While Morgan Freeman has dabbled in comedy in his long and illustrious career, I don't think he's ever really gotten a chance to really cut loose. He certainly hasn't gotten to play in the raunchy end of the pool, but it sounds as though he's taking the leap in Dirty Old Men. The Hollywood Reporter says that he's attached to star as an aging playboy in the tentatively titled project, and we'll either be laughing or horribly traumatized by his efforts.

Men was penned by Josh Cagan and Greg Coolidge, and is said to be similar in tone to The Wedding Crashers and The 40 Year Old Virgin. It centers on two aging playboys who have been each other's wingmen for over 40 years. One of them meets the love of his life, leaving the other (played by Freeman) to chase skirts on his own. Well, that just won't do. The »

Robert Rodriquez Moves On From The Jetsons

2 November 2009 9:17 AM, PST | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Robert Rodriquez has apparently found other shiny little movie trinkets to capture his eye and has left the remake of the 60’s Sci-Fi cartoon “The Jetsons” to other interested parties. And it seems that the interested party is Peter Segal, the director of “Get Smart” and “Tommy Boy”. According to Pajiba, Peter is circling, circling. “The Jetsons” would make a pretty good movie. No word on a finished script that I’ve seen. We’ll keep you in the loop. »

Peter Segal Replaces Rodriguez on 'The Jetsons'?

2 November 2009 8:15 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

By: John Gholson

This movie should've happened fifteen years ago, and it should've starred Tim Allen. It didn't, so here we are in 2009 talking about whether or not a live-action movie based on Hanna-Barbera's animated "futuristic" sitcom The Jetsons will ever see the light of day.

Pajiba says yes, and they say that Peter Segal (Get Smart, Tommy Boy) is the director currently circling the long-dormant project. Director Robert Rodriguez (Shorts) was once enthusiastic about taking a crack at the material, but Warner Brothers wants to move on the project soon and Rodriguez keeps a full plate. Unlike Pajiba, though, I don't see this potential shift in directors as a huge step down.

Morgan Freeman Is an Old Dirty Man But Also One with Dignity and Gravitas

According to THR:

The script, which had a working title of “Dirty Old Men,” revolves around an aging playboy who finally meets the love of his life and his best friend and wingman for the past 40 years (Freeman) who does everything to break up the new couple. Morgan Freeman Is a 'Dirty Old' Man

We just updated the path of the live-action The Jetsons, which will move forward without its long-time developer, Robert Rodriguez. The theory being pushed is that Peter Segal (Get Smart) would be brought in to direct. If that does happen, it'll have to wait.

Segal is set to direct a new comedy starring Morgan Freeman called Dirty Old Men, which Warner Bros. just picked up from writers Josh Cagan and Greg Coolidge. The Hollywood Reporter says the project "revolves around an aging playboy who finally meets the love of his life and his best friend and wingman for the past 40 years (Freeman) who does everything to break up the new couple."

It's being described as similar to Wedding Crashers and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Only with an aroma of analgesic ointment. »
