Looking for Inspiration for Hotel Design? Try Violent, Profane Movies

17 hours ago | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

Quentin Tarantino's cult classic, Reservoir Dogs, with its cast of violent, sociopathic killers with names straight out of a Crayola box--Mr. Orange, Mr. Blue, Mr. Pink--was the inspiration for a 10-pack of rooms at the recently-opened Paradise Tower at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. Like skulls stenciled on your bedroom wall? Got that. A bed illuminated by blue neon? Check. Wall-sized images of topless women enjoying a post-coital smoke above the headboard? No problem.

"Everyone was so afraid we'd look like another Morgans Hotel property," says Hard Rock Cmo Phil Shalala. "But we kept our brand." Indeed.

The ten pool suites in "The Dime" were designed by South African designer Mark Zeff of ZeffDesign and Las Vegas-based designer Mark Tracy of Chemical Spaces to be decadent, party-like-a-rock-star spaces. Each one is outfitted with the accoutrements critical to the life of a hard-partying young music or entertainment industry »

Colin Powell and the Stars of Precious Convene at the Crosby Street Hotel

6 November 2009 4:00 PM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Sapphire, Lee Daniels, Gabourey Sidibe, General Colin Powell. From PatrickMcMullan.com. "Every time I get to New York I get nervous because of the New Yorkers," joked director Lee Daniels when introducing his new and much buzzed-about film, Precious, at the Cinema Society and Tommy Hilfiger's screening on Thursday evening. He had nothing to fear, however: the movie was a resounding success, with many a viewer—including model Agyness Deyn, nightclub owner Amy Sacco, and Keith Richards spawn Alexandra Richards—leaving the theater drying their eyes. "It wasn't until the movie was done that I realized how daunting it had been," said a beaming and pregnant Paula Patton. "It took me a few months to shake that character loose because of dealing with difficult subject matter day in and day out." Screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher explained his tactic in adapting Sapphire's book Push: "I think this is a perfect novel, »

Spike TV's 2009 Scream Awards: star-studded and surreal

28 October 2009 3:24 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

I don't know if you caught last night's 2009 Scream Awards on Spike TV last night. But if you didn't, then you missed out on one of the strangest parades of Hollywood back-patting ever staged. For those unfamiliar with this new heir to the Oscars and the Golden Globes, the Scream Awards are ostensibly all about celebrating the best in sci-fi, fantasy, and horror on both the big and the small screen. And just to show that the event is even cooler than the MTV Movie Awards, the categories honor such superlatives as Best Horror Movie, Best Villain, and my personal favorite, »

Scott Weiland, shot to fame as frontman for 90s era grunge band Stone Temple Pilots and took the name literally. He was stoned most of the time, strung out on heroin, often with his wife Mary Forsberg Weiland at his side. She tells all in a new book. Mary Weiland says they were shooting up so much they had to wear long sleeves at a Fourth of July party at the Malibu home of Leonardo DiCaprio to high the needle marks in their arms from the heroin. Much of the time the couple spent together, they were doing drugs. “Scott would bring me a framed Neil Zlozower photograph of [Rolling Stone] Keith Richards; I’d lay out the goods right on top of Keith.” »

Somali Pirates Plan On Boarding A Theater Near You

23 October 2009 12:24 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Is there any more exciting film staple than pirates? Pillaging, raping, kidnapping, cannon-firing, parrot-owning, Sicilian-beating, Keith Richards-loving, one leg missing, singing and dancing pirates! And now we can add real-life pirates to the list thanks to those pesky Somalian rapscallions who've been terrorizing the coast of Africa for the past several years. Per Variety, Columbia Pictures has hired Billy Ray to write a film based on the five-day hostage drama that played out earlier this year. More specifically, the film will center on Captain Richard Phillips whose life story rights as well as the rights to his upcoming book were optioned by Columbia. Phillips was held hostage by pirates before being rescued by Navy Seals. Spoiler alert! Ray's most recent work as screenwriter includes State of Play, Breach, and Flightplan. He also has a Westworld remake and the potential Ryan Reynolds vehicle Motorcade on his plate as well. This project is easily a year or more »

Scream Awards 2009: A Report From Front Row Center

21 October 2009 7:42 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

This past Saturday, October 17th, I attended my second year of Spike TV’s annual Scream Awards. Not only did I attend, but I had been hand-picked by the casting director to sit front row center for the show! As a fan-focused awards show, it’s much more enjoyable being seated amongst Jj Abrams, Karl Urban, Elijah Wood and Woody Harrelson. My favorite personal surprise of the evening came when the Best Science Fiction Actress nominees were being announced. I cheered (maybe a little too loudly for my girlfriend’s tastes) for Eliza Dushku when her name was announced, only to discover she was sitting right in front of me. She turned around and flashed me her lovely smile. Good thing my girlfriend isn’t the overly-jealous type.

As for the show itself, it seems as though the winners have already been leaked online, and the best surprises have been revealed, »

Does Architecture Have a Foot Fetish?

21 October 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

You don't have to try very hard to spot the architecture students on a college campus. They're the ones with the carefully considered shoes (and artful eyewear). It's easy to see why architects are so selective about their footwear: What are shoes, after all, but mini buildings for your feet? Design and fashion are kissing cousins, and moving closer all the time, so it makes sense that a group of well-known architects have begun designing shoes, especially since the economic slowdown may have left them with spare time. Though it's hard to say whether these shoes are full-square design efforts, vanity projects or glorified licensing agreements.

Frank Gehry and his son, Alejandro Gehry, an artist, collaborated on a foppish two-tone boot for the high-end French shoemaker J.M. Weston. The boot is based on a 19th-century design for Prince Albert, though it looks like the kind of thing Keith Richards »

Twilight wins big at the Scream awards

19 October 2009 3:22 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

'Twilight' was the big winner at last night's Scream Awards (18.10.09).

The vampire franchise won four accolades at the star-studded ceremony at the Greek Theatre in Hollywood, including Best Fantasy Movie, while its two main lead stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were named Best Fantasy Actor in the Female and Male categories respectively.

Their co-star Taylor Lautner won Breakout Performance Male, while 'Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen' starlet Isabel Lucas was named Breakout Performance Female.

Isabel's co-star Megan Fox picked up the prize for Best Sci-Fi Actress and took the opportunity to quash rumours of a rift between her and the film's director Michael Bay.

She said: "I would like to take this moment to actually say something genuine. There have been a lot of false reports concerning how I feel about this movie and I just want to be very clear that I've always felt that I am »

Scream 2009 Recap: Reign of the Vampires and Space Crews

19 October 2009 9:11 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

True to its name, the Scream Awards is an award show where the winners are decided by the biggest scream, like talent shows of olden days, before text messaging and toll-free numbers were invented. In this case, Scream winners are decided by internet votes. It's not surprising to then see current trend-grabbing vampires dominate the show; but the awards, it seemed, are secondary. The highlights of the night are all the honorary awards, celebrating the legends of their own mediums.

It was a little disconcerting to notice that the award winners were all telegraphed by the adoring cheers of the audience, too. The more enthusiastic the cheers, the likelier for that person to win. Vampires are definitely in this year, with notable appearances/wins for Twilight, True Blood, The Vampire's Assistant and Let the Right One In.

The most telling part of the award show being entertainment first-recognition second is »

'Twilight,' 'True Blood' Vampires Win Big At Spike TV's Scream Awards

19 October 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

From MTV.Com: At the previous three incarnations of the Spike TV Scream Awards, vampires were considered just another fanboy favorite, alongside such evergreens as zombies, killer robots, and busty sci-fi babes. But over the past 12 months, franchises like "Twilight" and "True Blood" have sunk their teeth into Hollywood, and Saturday night's taping of the fourth annual awards showed that there's no hate from the horror fans.

"'Scream' is in the name — how much cooler can you get?" marveled "The Big Bang Theory" star Kaley Cuoco, looking up and down a checkered black-and-white carpet that had scantily clad women on swings overhead and a unicorn frolicking with such stars as Christina Ricci, Keith Richards and Justin Long. "Vampires are hot! It's scary stuff; they love this whole sci-fi, futuristic thing. Vampires are hot, nerds are hot. The world is coming to an end."

Taylor, Johnny, Megan & Vampires Make Scream Awards Sexy

The Spike Scream Awards took over the Greek Theater in La on Saturday night, bringing together the biggest names in Horror, Fantasy, Comics and Science Fiction. Vampires were of course some of the biggest winners of the night and the stars of The Vampire Diaries and True Blood were all in attendance. Kate Bosworth presented a statue to Alexander Skarsgard, amid rumors that there's something going on between them. Taylor Lautner was the only Twilight representative and debuted the "Behind the Scenes" New Moon footage, which wasn't much though more may come when the show actually airs. There were rumors that Kristen Stewart would make a cameo since she was back in La, but fans were still satisfied to see sexy Taylor representing and all the shirtless Wolf Pack in the footage from the upcoming film.
