Johnny Depp has given British hitmaker Babybird a big boost by insisting the singer/songwriter's 2010 album Ex-maniac will be the album of the year.
The movie star was asked to list his 'Essentials' for U.S. magazine Entertainment Weekly and admits he already can't live without his friend's new album.
Depp says, "He's a national treasure, if you're British. For everyone else, he's a diamond waiting to be found. Lyrically, he's black as night, brilliant and sharp as a razor."
The Pirates of the Caribbean star also listed longtime partner Vanessa Paradis' latest album, Divinidylle, among his favourites, calling it "the most beautiful soundtrack to our life en famille".
And there's also mention of his onscreen Pirates father Keith Richards' Unknown Dreams and Rum, Sodomy & The Lash by The Pogues.
Depp also namechecks Emir Kusturica's Time of The Gypsies and Underground among his favourite films, calling the Serbian filmmaker, "one of the last true auteurs". The actor is in talks to play Mexican bandit revolutionary Pancho Villa in Kusturica's next film.
Also on the star's top film list: his own Ed Wood, Jim Jarmusch's Down By Law and cult British movie Withnail & I, which he can freely quote.
He adds, "(That's) probably the funniest f**king film I've ever seen." »

Ozzy Osbourne turns 61 years old today. The godfather of modern metal, Ozzy first grabbed attention as the creepy, theatrical frontman of Black Sabbath, still one of the heaviest bands in rock history. Of course, Ozzy is probably best known to modern audiences as a reality show star (MTV's smash hit "The Osbournes") and as a solo artist (his hit "Crazy Train" remains a staple at sports arenas, rock-themed karaoke bars and air guitar contests worldwide).
It's nothing short of miraculous that Ozzy has made it this far. He had a legendarily massive drug and alcohol habit during his youth, and though he's clean now, it remains a constant struggle. In one of the great rock and roll stories of all time, Osbourne was on tour with Mötley Crüe when he spied a row of ants following the trail of a melted popsicle. In a stunt that seems apocryphal but appears to be true, »

The rocker – the widow of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain – went to New York’s famous Scores club earlier this week, but as the male musicians enjoyed the girls’ performances, Courtney reminisced about her own days as an erotic dancer. A source told the New York Post newspaper: “Courtney brought in a group of guys who all looked like Keith Richards, some of whom were in her band. She was saying she used to be a stripper and appreciated what the girls do. Courtney left in a limousine with a female friend after 45 minutes, leaving the band to enjoy themselves." Courtney decided to reform Hole earlier this year. The wild rocker ditched plans to release a solo album after deciding the tracks for the proposed record were more suited to her old band. Courtney replaced founding Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson with British musician Micko Larkin - who previously was a member »

I know Johnny Depp a little. He is a lovely guy. We met many years ago when I went to do a Rolling Stone cover story on Winona Ryder, and I lost an interview tape in the beanbag chair of the house they were living in then. Johnny generously offered to help me search everywhere until we found the missing cassette. Years later, I did another Rolling Stone cover story with Johnny and Keith Richards for the Pirates movie. And just a few weeks ago, I ran into Johnny again when he very sweetly found the time to present his movie dad Keith with the Rock Icon award at the 2009 Scream Awards which I was working on. Because we share so much history together, I am hereby announcing that I have decided not to protest Johnny's... »

Break out the Bordeaux, the whoopee cushions and the bangin' Keith Richards guitar solos, because the 2009 Sexiest Man Alive party is officially under way. Bringing the fun with him wherever he goes - whether it's onscreen in fizzy roles like Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise or at home with his family on their private Bahamian island - is just one reason why Johnny Depp, who also scored the honor in 2003, has joined an elite club of two-time Sma title holders (only Brad Pitt and George Clooney have matched the feat). Johnny Depp has been laying low as usual recently, but he smiled and posed at Frank Pictures Gallery where the work of artists Kellisimone Waits and Tiffany Trenda was being shown in Santa Monica on Sunday. Kellisimone's father, Tom Waits, is a friend of Johnny's and a costar in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Johnny hit the stage to accept an award and hand one out to Keith Richards at last month's Scream Awards, but otherwise Depp's been hard at work on a handful of movies including the anticipated Alice in Wonderland - check out the awesome new poster for it here! He's also rumored to be taking on a new role in The Tourist that comes with a sexy costar, Angelina Jolie. No matter what Johnny's up to, he always keeps it interesting from his movie choices to his signature style. View 5 Photos › »

Quentin Tarantino's cult classic, Reservoir Dogs, with its cast of violent, sociopathic killers with names straight out of a Crayola box--Mr. Orange, Mr. Blue, Mr. Pink--was the inspiration for a 10-pack of rooms at the recently-opened Paradise Tower at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. Like skulls stenciled on your bedroom wall? Got that. A bed illuminated by blue neon? Check. Wall-sized images of topless women enjoying a post-coital smoke above the headboard? No problem.
"Everyone was so afraid we'd look like another Morgans Hotel property," says Hard Rock Cmo Phil Shalala. "But we kept our brand." Indeed.
The ten pool suites in "The Dime" were designed by South African designer Mark Zeff of ZeffDesign and Las Vegas-based designer Mark Tracy of Chemical Spaces to be decadent, party-like-a-rock-star spaces. Each one is outfitted with the accoutrements critical to the life of a hard-partying young music or entertainment industry »

Sapphire, Lee Daniels, Gabourey Sidibe, General Colin Powell. From PatrickMcMullan.com. "Every time I get to New York I get nervous because of the New Yorkers," joked director Lee Daniels when introducing his new and much buzzed-about film, Precious, at the Cinema Society and Tommy Hilfiger's screening on Thursday evening. He had nothing to fear, however: the movie was a resounding success, with many a viewer—including model Agyness Deyn, nightclub owner Amy Sacco, and Keith Richards spawn Alexandra Richards—leaving the theater drying their eyes. "It wasn't until the movie was done that I realized how daunting it had been," said a beaming and pregnant Paula Patton. "It took me a few months to shake that character loose because of dealing with difficult subject matter day in and day out." Screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher explained his tactic in adapting Sapphire's book Push: "I think this is a perfect novel, »

I don't know if you caught last night's 2009 Scream Awards on Spike TV last night. But if you didn't, then you missed out on one of the strangest parades of Hollywood back-patting ever staged. For those unfamiliar with this new heir to the Oscars and the Golden Globes, the Scream Awards are ostensibly all about celebrating the best in sci-fi, fantasy, and horror on both the big and the small screen. And just to show that the event is even cooler than the MTV Movie Awards, the categories honor such superlatives as Best Horror Movie, Best Villain, and my personal favorite, »

Scott Weiland, shot to fame as frontman for 90s era grunge band Stone Temple Pilots and took the name literally. He was stoned most of the time, strung out on heroin, often with his wife Mary Forsberg Weiland at his side. She tells all in a new book. Mary Weiland says they were shooting up so much they had to wear long sleeves at a Fourth of July party at the Malibu home of Leonardo DiCaprio to high the needle marks in their arms from the heroin. Much of the time the couple spent together, they were doing drugs. “Scott would bring me a framed Neil Zlozower photograph of [Rolling Stone] Keith Richards; I’d lay out the goods right on top of Keith.” »

Is there any more exciting film staple than pirates? Pillaging, raping, kidnapping, cannon-firing, parrot-owning, Sicilian-beating, Keith Richards-loving, one leg missing, singing and dancing pirates! And now we can add real-life pirates to the list thanks to those pesky Somalian rapscallions who've been terrorizing the coast of Africa for the past several years. Per Variety, Columbia Pictures has hired Billy Ray to write a film based on the five-day hostage drama that played out earlier this year. More specifically, the film will center on Captain Richard Phillips whose life story rights as well as the rights to his upcoming book were optioned by Columbia. Phillips was held hostage by pirates before being rescued by Navy Seals. Spoiler alert! Ray's most recent work as screenwriter includes State of Play, Breach, and Flightplan. He also has a Westworld remake and the potential Ryan Reynolds vehicle Motorcade on his plate as well. This project is easily a year or more »

This past Saturday, October 17th, I attended my second year of Spike TV’s annual Scream Awards. Not only did I attend, but I had been hand-picked by the casting director to sit front row center for the show! As a fan-focused awards show, it’s much more enjoyable being seated amongst Jj Abrams, Karl Urban, Elijah Wood and Woody Harrelson. My favorite personal surprise of the evening came when the Best Science Fiction Actress nominees were being announced. I cheered (maybe a little too loudly for my girlfriend’s tastes) for Eliza Dushku when her name was announced, only to discover she was sitting right in front of me. She turned around and flashed me her lovely smile. Good thing my girlfriend isn’t the overly-jealous type.
As for the show itself, it seems as though the winners have already been leaked online, and the best surprises have been revealed, »

You don't have to try very hard to spot the architecture students on a college campus. They're the ones with the carefully considered shoes (and artful eyewear). It's easy to see why architects are so selective about their footwear: What are shoes, after all, but mini buildings for your feet? Design and fashion are kissing cousins, and moving closer all the time, so it makes sense that a group of well-known architects have begun designing shoes, especially since the economic slowdown may have left them with spare time. Though it's hard to say whether these shoes are full-square design efforts, vanity projects or glorified licensing agreements.
Frank Gehry and his son, Alejandro Gehry, an artist, collaborated on a foppish two-tone boot for the high-end French shoemaker J.M. Weston. The boot is based on a 19th-century design for Prince Albert, though it looks like the kind of thing Keith Richards »
