Argentine Cinema: The Headless Woman—Onstage Conversation Between Lucrecia Martel and B. Ruby Rich

29 August 2009 3:56 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

As a companion piece to my Q&A transcript of the La Ciénaga screening at the Yerba Buena Center of the Arts earlier this summer, I offer the subsequent evening’s conversation regarding La Mujer Sin Cabeza (The Headless Woman) between filmmaker Lucrecia Martel and cultural critic B. Ruby Rich. This conversation is not for the spoiler-wary.

The Headless Woman will be screening as part of the San Francisco Film Society’s Kabuki Screen on September 18-24, 2009.

Argentine Cinema—Lucrecia Martel on La Ciénaga

15 July 2009 11:31 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

In yet another masterful programming coup, Joel Shepard scores one for the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts with—not only the Bay Area premiere of Lucrecia Martel‘s latest film The Headless Woman—but a retrospective of her earlier films La Ciénaga and Holy Girl with Martel present at both La Ciénaga (in conversation with her audience) and The Headless Woman (in conversation with B. Ruby Rich). This is one of those in-cinema experiences buttressed by its social texture in which I am delighted to have taken part.

SFIFF52—For The Love of Movies: The Story of American Film Criticism

23 April 2009 12:48 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

I take two big gulps of black coffee this morning.  First, because the Cannes line-up has been officially announced (and it’s downright thrilling), and second and most immediately, because the 52nd edition of the San Francisco International Film Festival launches this evening at San Francisco’s majestic movie palace The Castro Theatre with the West Coast premiere of Peter Bratt’s La Mission, followed by an opening night party at Bruno’s and a rare opportunity to party among the ruins of El Capitan, one of the jewels of yesteryear’s Miracle Mile.  I take a third gulp to chase those two down.

Although I’ve already offered a few previews for SFIFF52, I’d like to officially begin my coverage with comments on what I consider to be one of the most prescient, fascinating and must-see selections in SFIFF52’s line-up: the West Coast premiere of Boston Phoenix »

It Came From Kuchar Premieres at SXSW

8 March 2009 3:20 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

One of the titles to look out for at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival and Conference is Jennifer Kroot’s documentary It Came from Kuchar. The film examines the lives of the twin pioneers of experimental films: George and Mike Kuchar. Kroot’s film, which will have its world premiere at SXSW on March 14th, 2009, is described as follows:

The documentary tells the story of legendary underground film pioneers George and Mike Kuchar. In addition to compelling interviews with the twins themselves, It Came From Kuchar features conversations with celebrated personalities of independent and underground film that were influenced by the Kuchars including John Waters, who himself claims, “George and Mike Kuchar’s films were my first inspiration,” B. Ruby Rich, Buck Henry, Atom Egoyan, Guy Maddin and Wayne Wang.

A documentary about the people behind films such as Thundercrack and Sins of the Fleshapoids seems like a sure bet. However, »
