Watch the Trailer for Werner Herzog and David Lynch's My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done

18 August 2009 1:45 PM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done has a pedigree that almost guarantees it an audience (Ie: Werner Herzog directs, David Lynch produces), so it doesn’t really matter that this first trailer makes the movie look like a glum, dull retread of other self-serious thrillers. The film follows the apparently true story of a man (Michael Shannon) who acts out a Sophocles play in his head and kills his mother (Grace Zabriskie, from Big Love) with a sword. The cast also includes Willem Dafoe, Chloë Sevigny and Michael Peña. »

DVD release inspirations including The Lucky Ones

17 August 2009 2:16 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Morning Boxwishers and welcome to what is a very quiet Monday morning on the DVDs front. Y’know how sometimes there are so many new Dvds, you just don’t know which one to choose from? This ain’t one of those days. That’s not to say that what we have, one new DVD and two new Blu-Rays isn’t exciting, it’s just lacking any heavy-hitters, those films that you countdown till they’re available. Instead we have The Lucky Ones, a quirky indie starring lady of the moment Rachel McAdams and, making their Blu-Ray debuts, Angel Heart and La Haine. See, it’s not so bad after all. Click over the jump for more.

If you see… The Lucky Ones, starring Rachel McAdams, Tim Robbins and Michael Peña (Crash) as three Us soldiers that return from duty in Iraq to find that life has moved on without them. »

Five new stills from the film hit online today, and they definitely convey a sense of unease -- but what else would you expect from Herzog and his long-time cinematographer Peter Zeitlinger?

Collider scored the first look at the pics so be sure to hit the link to see the rest of them. The following summary comes from the Tiff 09 site, where you can find more info on all the films that will be showing there:

Battle: Los Angeles Script Review

6 August 2009 7:41 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Last month Columbia Pictures drafted the troops for Battle: Los Angeles, a science fiction movie being directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning).  Still intrigued?  I don’t see how, but here we go.

Aaron Eckhart plays the lead, a Marine staff sergeant in charge of a unit fighting their way through an alien invasion in the streets of modern day Los Angeles.  Firing a weapon alongside him is Michelle Rodriguez (who also plays a grunt in James Cameron’s Avatar) as Corporal Santos, plus Michael Peña and Bridget Moynahan as two civilians they meet along the way.  Shooting begins this fall, but in the meantime I took a peek at the script.  I wish I hadn’t.

It should be noted the original Battle of Los Angeles happened in 1942 three months after the attack on Pearl Harbor.  Eyewitness reports from scared citizens started an anti-aircraft barrage on »

The Jody Hill Interview Part 2: Observe & Report, the “Sex Scene Controversy,” Mall Hate, Parents, The Foot Fist Way, and a “Southern Godfather”

9 July 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

This past April saw the release of writer/director Jody Hill's first official Hollywood feature entitled Observe & Report. The film is an uncompromised portrait of a young mall-cop riding the peaks and valleys of bi-polar disorder like a vigilante daydream set to Queen's Flash Gordon theme. In the lead, Seth Rogen gave his most memorable and invested performance since a scathing-eyes debut on Freaks and Geeks. On top of that, Observe's production design was deliberately unglamorous; its depictions of a troubled, goofy main character and firearms bordered, at times, on misanthropic endorsement. Hill's script and direction managed to flesh out an endlessly talented supporting cast (Anna Faris, Aziz Ansari, Patton Oswalt, Ben Best, Danny McBride, Ray Liotta, Michael Peña, Collette Wolfe) in a decidedly untypical comedy. Many critics and viewers didn't know what to make of it. Far too many critics said, "I liked it, but it's not for everyone. »

Observe and Report

21 April 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Release Date: April 10

Director: Jody Hill

Writer: Jody Hill

Cinematographer: Tim Orr

Starring: Seth Rogen, Ray Liotta, Michael Peña, Anna Faris

Second-rate Taxi Driver

Calling Observe and Report a comedic variation of Taxi Driver is half right. Jody Hill’s new movie about a mall security guard with delusions of grandeur does follow the plot and structure of Scorsese’s stylish 1976 portrait of an unstable cabbie. But the comparison misses the fact that Taxi Driver is itself pretty funny, by design. All of its looming and actual bursts of violence are dripping with irony, and the dangerous naiveté of the eponymous taxi driver, Travis Bickle, is the source of many of the film’s jokes, unsettling though they may be. »

Observe and Report Review

13 April 2009 11:13 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Observe and Report Written and Directed by: Jody Hill Starring: Seth Rogen, Anna Faris, Michael Peña, Ray Liotta There's a point about halfway through Jody Hill's Observe and Report where Ben Best hides in a closet in order to watch Seth Rogen's character receive some bad news. When he doesn't get the reaction he was expecting, he simply bails saying, "I thought this was going to be funny, but it turns out it's just sad." It struck me at that moment how this could very well summarize someone's reaction to the entire film. Whether or not it was an intentional jab at the audience remains to be seen, but in a movie that flashes the middle finger at just about everything in sight, it's not hard to think twice about a lot of the things presented on screen. As a comedy, Observe and Report delivers plenty of funny moments, »

Fsr’s Weekly Report Card for 04.10.09

10 April 2009 10:56 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Observe And Report Studio: Warner Bros. Rated: R for for pervasive language, graphic nudity, drug use, sexual content and violence. Starring: Seth Rogen, Anna Faris, Michael Peña, Ray Liotta and Collette Wolfe Directed by: Jody Hill What it’s about: Seth Rogen plays a bipolar mall security guard who is infatuated with the girl at the perfume counter (Anna Faris). While trying to get in her pants, he’s also trying to solve a string of crimes that have been happening at the mall. When a real policeman (Ray Liotta) threatens his fragile world, things go a bit nuts. What I liked: I will admit that I did laugh at some moments in this movie. This film has a very sharp edge that is not going to be right for everyone. In this respect, I did enjoy some of the more outrageous moments. Additionally, the non-stop onslaught of profanity and raunchiness was something that I could respect »

Box Office Weekend Ahead – Can Hannah Montana stop Fast and Furious?

10 April 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

Disney unspools its next teen-drawing venture in “Hannah Montana: The Movie” into 3,115 venues, certainly pulling in tons of fans of the eagerly followed series. The question? Do they have what it takes to down “Fast and Furious” in its sophomore weekend at play? “Furious” has turned in the biggest gross of the year so far with $70.9 million grossed and a total of over $85 million pocketed thus far. “Montana” is helmed by Peter Chelsom, known for crowd-pleasing films like “The Mighty,” “Serendipity” and “Shall We Dance.” Two other wide openers will be vying for a slice of the weekend’s earnings but should pose no threat to the first two films. The first is the mall cop comedy “Observe and Report” which finds 2,727 locations and stars the ever-popular Seth Rogen as well as Michael Peña and Anna Faris. Jody Hill of “The Foot Fist Way” directs and writers the screenplay. We »

[Movie Review] Observe and Report

9 April 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Even the Rat Pack had an entourage—the hangers-on who show up in many of the same films or productions, but never achieved group title status.  As does modern-day Hollywood’s “Frat Pack,” made up of the leading men in the comedy genre.  While there are only seven official members of the unofficial group, there are many friends of the Frat Pack that might be considered “junior members.”

The curly-haired funny man Seth Rogen is one of the Frat Pack’s pals and has gained himself a bona fide Hollywood reputation since his early days on the fast-cancelled television show, Freaks and Geeks.  After some minor roles in major Frat Pack flicks, Rogen gained speed—his latest comedy, Observe and Report, has got him in the lead role as a bipolar mall security guard.

The premise probably sounds familiar, as it’s a similar character to the Kevin James movie Paul Blart: Mall Cop, »

"Observe and Report" - Review #2. A raucous comedy that for the most part delivers on the laughs

9 April 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

"Observe and Report" reviewby Eric Sloss, Writer       Mall cops are now all the rage in movies.  After the surprise smash success of “Paul Blart: Mall Cop”, comes “Observe and Report”.  Although these movies share a lot in common, they couldn’t be further apart in tone.  The Paul Blart movie was more of a family oriented film that played it close to the vest.  “Observe and Report” deals with much more adult themes and attitudes.  You truly never know which way it would go.  This is a blessing and a curse at the same time.   Seth Rogen plays mall cop Ronnie Barnhardt.  He’s actually head of mall security.  Ronnie hilariously gets upset at a news reporter for getting his title wrong.  Ronnie is thrust into the spotlight by a flasher at the mall.  He is bound and determined to catch this guy and does whatever it takes to catch him. »

"Observe and Report" review - How is it possible that there’s a second movie about a mall cop to review already this year?

8 April 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

"Observe and Report" Review by Mike Digiorgio, Writer   How is it possible that there’s a second movie about a mall cop to review already this year?   After suffering through the huge disappointment that was Paul Blart: Mall Cop, I hoped maybe Observe and Report could capture what should be a funny movie.  With apologies to the real-life guys who observe and report, a movie about a mall security guard who takes his job too seriously should be funny in the right hands.  If I may, I’ll quote myself from my Paul Blart review referencing one of the few things I liked:  “It’s kind of funny that Paul took an oath as a security guard to ‘observe and report’ and he works a Segway very well – we needed more of that kind of law enforcement parody earlier on.”     Ah ha!  I got a kick out of that phrase »
