After winning last year’s Oscar for Best Documentary, director James Marsh is moving onto feature films with The Vatican Tapes.
The film is a supernatural thriller (of course it is, everything is these days) that follows the events set in motion when a tape showing a botched exorcism by the Vatican is leaked. Rather than focusing on the tapes of the exorcism itself, The Vatican Tapes will center on what happens after the tapes get out.
The Vatican Tapes comes from an idea thought up by Chris Morgan and Chris Borrelli, and was then turned into a screenplay by Borrelli. It will also be the first non-documentary to Marsh’s directing credits.
Marsh’s documentaries have won the director eight different awards, as well as six other nominations. If he can transition his skill as a director from filming true life events to fiction, The Vatican Tapes could shape »

James Marsh directed the 2008 documentary Man On Wire, a film that still holds a 100% rating at RottenTomatoes, which is something of an anomaly considering the ability to get everyone to agree on a film is damn near impossible. Now, Marsh has chosen his next feature in which he will pull a complete 180, divorcing himself from a legitimate documentary and enter the world of found footage mockumentaries.
The Hollywood Reporter brings word Marsh will direct The Vatican Tapes which will center on a series of events that unfold after a tape gets leaked from the Vatican displaying an exorcism that goes wrong. Chris Borrelli, co-writer of the upcoming direct-to-video release The Marine 2, penned the script based on a story by Borrelli and Chris Morgan (Wanted, Fast and Furious).
The film is set up at Lionsgate and Lakeshore and is obviously hoping to follow the wave created by Paranormal Activity and you »

You want more "found footage" horror? You got it! Lionsgate and Lakeshore Entertainment are prepping development of a new thriller called The Vatican Tapes, about an exorcism gone awry. The story, which was conceived by Chris Morgan (Wanted, Fast & Furious) and written by Chris Borrelli (The Marine 2), involves a tape that gets leaked from The Vatican with footage of this frightening exorcism. While it's unclear if the entire movie will actually be the footage itself, this week they've announced that they've hired Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker James Marsh to direct it. Marsh is best known for the fantastic 2008 doc Man on Wire, about Philippe Petit's tightrope walk between the World Trade Center towers, but most recently he directed Red Riding: 1980, a fictionalized crime thriller about the Yorkshire Ripper murders in England. I have to admit, I really like the sound of this, but great documentary directors don't always make »

Looking to further expand upon the possession craze that has begun sweeping the horror community as of late, Lionsgate and Lakeshore Entertainment have partnered to get the ball rolling on the next bit of the devil made them do it mayhem.

James Marsh won plaudits and a Best Documentary Oscar for Man On Wire, the story of tightrope artist Philippe Petit and his amazing walk between the towers of the World Trade Centre in 1974. But now he's abandoning the real world for a supernatural thriller called The Vatican Tapes, which is sadly not about the Pope's '80s mix selections. No, instead of Do You Really Want To Hurt Me and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, this is a tale with a horror tinge, about a Vatican tape of an exorcism gone wrong being leaked. We're guessing that the results could resemble a cross between Paranormal Activity and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, but only time will tell. The screenplay's by Chris Borrelli, a former visual effects guy who previously wrote horror movie Whisper and action-fest The Marine 2. Chris Morgan, one of the writers on Wanted and Fast & Furious, also worked on the story. »

British director James Marsh made huge waves with his exhilarating documentary Man on Wire, which is apparently loved by nearly everyone. Now Marsh will jump back to feature films as THR reports he will be helming the supernatual thriller The Vatican Tapes which centers on a series of events that unfold after a tape gets leaked from the Vatican displaying an exorcism that goes wrong. At least they're laying this all out on the table as opposed to The Exorcism of Emily Rose which instead portrayed itself as an Exorcist style horror flick, when it was really just a courtroom drama with unfrightening flashbacks. That's right, I said it. Chris Borrelli wrote the screenplay based on a story envisioned by himself and Chris Morgan, but no cast is attached yet. This isn't the first time Marsh has directed a non-documentary film, as he directed The King starring Gael Garcia Bernal »

It's been a little while since we've heard anything about the impending "Gears of War" movie adaptation, but that doesn't mean there hasn't been movement going on behind-the-scenes. In fact, it looks like a new soldier has been recruited into the fold to battle the Locust Horde.
According to /Film, screenwriter Billy Ray has been tapped to work on the script for "Gears of War," which is currently pegged as a Len Wiseman directing vehicle. Ray's work on the screenplay comes hot off the heels of "Wanted" scribe Chris Morgan, the most recent writer attached to the project.
It's currently unclear how Ray's version of "Gears of War" will differ from Morgan's, if at all. When Morgan spoke with MTV News earlier this year, he said that his take on the film was currently being budgeted out. He also had enough involvement in the project to weigh in on who »

On Thursday, Variety shared the news that screenwriter Billy Ray (State of Play) was set to take on the real life story of Captain Richard Phillips, the man who was held captive by Somali pirates for five days earlier this year. As interesting as it would be to see Captain Phillips’ dramatic escape brought to the big screen, there was a line at the bottom of the Variety article that was far more interesting: “He [Ray] is currently writing “Gears of War” for New Line.”
Wait? Gears of War? Last time we heard, that movie was being written by the team of Len Wiseman (Underworld) and Chris Morgan (Wanted, Fast and Furious), with Wiseman as director. What happened? Brendon Connelly over at /Film speculates that Wiseman turned to Billy Ray after the duo worked successfully on the forthcoming film, Motorcade. Earlier today, Russ told you that Billy Ray will be writing a ripped-from-the-headlines movie about Captain Richard Phillips vs. Somali Pirates. That's not Ray's only new writing gig, however, as he's also taking a crack at the Gears of War movie. Last we heard, director Len Wiseman was collaborating with Wanted scribe Chris Morgan on the project, superceding an ill-liked Stuart Beattie draft. Like that fellow with his One Red Paperclip, this sounds like a constant series of uptrades. So, how did Billy Ray get the gig? I'd imagine it's a case of who he knew, not what he knew. Ray has been working with director Wiseman on Motorcade recently, and it looks like that must have been a fruitful and pleasurable experience for the two of them to choose to do it all over again. I agree with Russ' position that Ray is a very talented filmmaker but that »

In the same way that higher-profile actors are jumping on the video game ship sans shame, so too are movie writers like Wanted's Chris Morgan. Morgan has signed up for a rather daunting task - working as the story director for the massive and practically holy sci-fi series The Wheel of Time by the late Robert Jordan. Variety reports that this job entails "overseeing the writing on the titles, working with executive producers and writers to help develop story arcs and helping to digest the book series' 10,000 pages and over 1,700 characters."
(Of course, Morgan and the other two screenplay writers, Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, were taken to task by fans for not sticking to the original comic book story all that much. However, compared to comic book purists, the wrath of Robert Jordan fans can be deadly. Or so I hear.)
Morgan isn't the only screenwriter who has »

Eagle Eye director D.J Caruso is set to helm a movie version of the game “Dead Space,” a film that will be produced by Electronic Arts and Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey of Temple Hill. Not for nothing, Caruso is said to also be working on an adaptation the game “Defender.”
Right now, “Dead Space” is looking at prospective screenwriters. Once EA has a set “creative direction,” they will begin to selling it to studios. Variety thinks that the auctioning will happen in early September.
“Dead Space” is set in the 26th century in space. It’s about an engineer who answers a distress call from a ship only to find on board monstrous creatures born from human corpses called Necromorphs. EA is also working on two sequels for the game launched in 2008.
The eerie video-game is one of many titles that are soon to get a cinematic adaptation. »

The director of this new installment talks about the new DVD, working with the original cast and a possible fifth film
Justin Lin is a director who has proven he can succeed both in and out of the studio system. His breakthrough film, Better Luck Tomorrow, lead to such studio films as Annapolis and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, but the director also found time between those projects to make the indie sensation Finishing the Game. The director is back with the franchise that brings all the hot cars and hot women to the silver screen, with the new film Fast & Furious, which hits the shelves on DVD and Blu-ray on July 28. I had the chance to speak with Lin today over the phone, and here's what he had to say.
I really enjoyed Tokyo Drift and the writer on that, Chris Morgan, had written this film as well, »

Yes, we know how she ended up at the end of Wanted (no spoilers here, check it out for yourself) but reports are coming in that wunderkind Russian director Timur Bekmabetov is planning to bring Angelina Jolie back for Wanted 2.The source of the story is here, but those of you who don't read Russian can click here for an English precis. Shooting is apparently to take place in the Us, India and Russia, with official preparation beginning next month. No mention of James McAvoy, but it sounds like there might be sequel hope for Konstantin Khabensky, who played the first film's Exterminator, and also appeared in Bekmabetov's Night Watch and Day Watch.Wanted was a very loose adaptation of an indie comic by Mark Millar (the comic is about a secret cabal set up to assassinate supervillains, and the film... isn't). There have been mutterings about a sequel since the release of the original. »

I guess we won't see Moby Dick anytime soon. Russian director Timur Bekmambetov spoke to the Russian outlet Ria Novosti (translated via Russia-ic) recently and told them that he's starting prep on Wanted 2 soon. "In July we will start preparation for the film. I think in the late autumn or winter shooting will be performed," he says. "The shooting will take place in America, India and Russia." We last heard about the sequel back in April when it was announced that Pooh's Heffalump Movie writer Evan Spiliotopoulos had been hired to write a script based off of a story by Wanted writer Chris Morgan. Apparently Bekmambetov said that he will bring back Angelina Jolie, which doesn't make sense considering what happened in Wanted. He also wants to bring back the character named The Exterminator played by Russian actor Konstantin Khabenskiy (he was the guy who ran the healing room »

The legend of “The 47 Ronin” is widely known throughout Japanese culture, but it’s a less commonly told tale in other societies — including Hollywood. That’s all going to change in light of the recent announcement of a “47 Ronin” film adaptation starring Keanu Reeves, whose half-Asian heritage will be a focal point of the movie.
“Wanted” screenwriter Chris Morgan penned the script for “47 Ronin” and went into detail with MTV News about the film’s plot, specifically referring to some beloved films that are tonally similar to the upcoming movie.
“It’s this great, ‘Gladiator’-esque, ‘300′-like big action movie with samurai and ninja,” Morgan said.
Although some “47 Ronin” enthusiasts have their doubts about the “Fast and Furious” scribe tackling the beloved Japanese tale, Morgan points to his long history as a “huge fan of samurai culture,” which he backs up with extensive knowledge of the “Ronin” story.

After "Fast and Furious" set an April record at the box office by bringing in over $72 million during the opening weekend, it was clear that a fifth installment in the franchise would be made. Chris Morgan, writer of "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," revealed to MTV News that a new movie is close to getting a green light. "It seems like there will definitely be another one," he said. "I just got out of a lunch with Universal, just pitching the story around." Both Vin Diesel and Paul Walker will return for the fifth film, which will take place in Brazil. Walker previously mentioned that "2 Fast 2 Furious" star Tyrese Gibson will likely join the new crew, since both he and director Justin Lin made a solid effort to get Gibson onboard for the fourth installment. »
