Ricky Gervais to Host Golden Globes in 2010

26 October 2009 12:24 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Today NBC, the broadcaster of the Golden Globe Awards, has annoucced that British comedian Ricky Gervais will host the awards ceremony on Sunday, January 17, 2010.

I understand that he's not universally loved, but I find Gervais to be very funny.  I had the opportunity to meet him very briefly this year at the Toronto International Film Festival, where he premiered The Invention of Lying.  He was super-nice and stopped to take a picture with a friend of mine.  My friend Cindy think he's "offensively hillarious".

Unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globes have not had a host since 1995, but NBC and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have decided to change things up:

The Invention of Lying Review

4 October 2009 10:27 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

The Invention of Lying Written and Directed by: Ricky Gervais and Matthew Robinson Starring: Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, Louis Ck, Jonah Hill You have to wonder what kind of person has it within them these days to conceive of a fantasy-based comedy and believe in it enough to see it through. Movies like this simply haven't been very good or funny lately, and despite a promising trailer, The Invention of Lying seemed destined to contain a zillion unexplainable and/or nonsensical holes, and would at best resemble a mediocre SNL skit stretched to 90 minutes. Most people opined that it looked like another take on Jim Carrey's Liar Liar. But of all things I worried that the brilliant creator of The Office, Ricky Gervais, would turn out a high concept comedy as torturous to sit through as Year One or Click. While it turns out that while some of these fears were well-founded, »

The Invention of Lying

The Invention of Lying

Directed by: Ricky Gervais & Matthew Robinson

Cast: Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Louis C.K

Running Time: 1 hr 40 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: October 2, 2009

Plot: In a world where everyone tells the truth, a total loser (Gervais) discovers the idea of lying.

Who’S It For? This is very much Gervais’ show, so anyone who enjoyed him in “Extras,” “The Office,” or even Ghost Town should like him here. But everyone, fan of the man or not, should level their expectations.

Expectations: I purposefully sat away from everyone, hoping to unleash loud belly laughs in anonymity. But I was also hoping for a little bit more than just jokes from this interesting concept.

Scorecard (0-10)

Actors:

Ricky Gervais as Mark Bellison: The script focuses on two things – elaborating on its original premise beyond the confines of a “romantic comedy,” and putting Gervais’ character at the center of »

Tooth Fairy Trailer Starring Dwayne Johnson

2 October 2009 11:29 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Dwayne Johnson's movie career has taken an odd and relatively shameless turn over the past few years. Like most wrestlers, he started out in Hollywood as an up and coming action star doing movies like The Scorpion King, The Rundown, and Walking Tall. After Doom and Southland Tales, however, he settled into more family-friendly territory and has never looked back. Now the trailer for his latest film Tooth Fairy has arrived online, and well... let's just say it's about as family-friendly as it gets. The Rock is Derek Thompson, a scrappy minor-league hockey player who hits so hard that he has earned the nickname "The Tooth Fairy" from opposing players. His bad attitude eventually lands him in hot water, however, and he is granted magical powers and forced to serve as a real honest-to-goodness Tooth Fairy. Hilarious! Would you expect anything more from the director of The Santa Clause 2? »

After getting into a scuffle and doing man stuff, a minor-league hockey player (Rock) gets sentenced to one week as a real tooth fairy. A real tooth fairy, not some fake-ass one.

Movie Review: The Invention of Lying (2009)

Jennifer Garner and Ricky Gervais in The Invention of Lying

Photo: Warner Bros. Someone told me after watching The Invention of Lying they didn't think the filmmakers knew exactly what kind of film they wanted to make. I don't believe this is the case. Instead, I think co-writers/co-directors Ricky Gervais and Matthew Robinson knew exactly what kind of film they wanted to make, but instead of taking that idea to the head of the class they stayed in the back row and everything just unraveled.

The idea behind The Invention of Lying is an alternate reality in which not only do people instinctively always tell the truth, they simply have no filter whatsoever. Without reason or request, anything negative about someone will be pointed out at random. No matter how long people have known each other and no matter how cruel. It's a glitch in the premise that does offer some early comedy, »

Tooth Fairy Trailer Online

A cast that includes Dwayne Johnson, Billy Crystal, Julie Andrews and Ashley Judd can't make for anything other than an intriguing prospect, right? See if you still think that having watched the trailer for Michael Lembeck's Tooth Fairy. As you'll gather, this is a high concept (think "Arnie pregnant!") family comedy in which The Dwayne plays a cynical hockey player who gets co-opted into a stint as a tooth fairy. With hilarious consequences. Because, like, Dwayne is big and hard, and he has to be a little delicate tooth fairy. We wish he'd go back to smashing things up with a plank of wood. What happened to Action Dwayne? Is he coming back? There are many extraordinary things about this clip, not least of which is the sight of The ex-Rock sharing a scene with Stephen Merchant. But what surprised us most was that we did actually laugh at »

Tooth Fairy Movie Trailer

1 October 2009 7:56 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

There are those in Hollywood that will tell you the pitch process is among the most demeaning and inhuman things a writer can do. I don't believe that. Usually. Every once in a while a trailer comes along that plays exactly like the pitch you hear in your head for the movie in question. The trailer for Tooth Fairy, which stars Dwayne Johnson as a mean old jerk of a hockey player who becomes a tooth fairy, is very much one of these. Suddenly, pitching a story to Hollywood execs seems very demeaning. Or maybe it's getting the movie made that is demeaning? Watching the trailer is like standing curbside for a parade of lost souls. Look, there goes Stephen Merchant! Oh, Ashley Judd, what happened to you? Not you, too, Billy Crystal! Tooth Fairy Trailer: The Rock Has Wings

The trailer for Tooth Fairy contains all of the things we.ve come to expect from The Rock.s horrible family friendly movies. He plays a famous sports figure of some type, he encounters cute kids who teach him a lesson, there.s magic/alien powers/fate involved somehow, and of course the trailer.s soundtrack is powered by the most cliché movie trailer music imaginable. But it also has Billy Crystal, Julie Andrews, and brilliant Ricky Gervais cohort Stephen Merchant. Maybe there.s something here worth seeing. Gervais' Failure Fears

30 September 2009 12:13 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Ricky Gervais avoided making a big screen movie for more than ten years - because he was frightened of failure.

Gervais and co-writer Stephen Merchant enjoyed enormous success with their comedy TV series The Office, and were approached by a number of movie studio bosses to pen a hit film.

The pair refused the offers for more than a decade, but finally teamed up to work on Cemetery Junction which is set for release next year.

Gervais says, "I think there'd be a prejudice if I was in it. There are prejudices out there - it's because people leap too quickly. They get one hit on TV and they try to make a film and it's dreadful. It's advertised for a week and then goes straight to DVD.

"You want to go in at a higher level. We resisted this for 10, 11 years.

"When The Office first came out we went round every film company and got offered a film deal. We took the card and said, 'We'll call you when we've got an idea.' We think we've done the film proud." »

The Invention of Lying is the Greatest Movie Ever Made*

30 September 2009 5:30 AM, PDT | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

Fact: Ricky Gervais is a genius. The Office, his 2001 BBC series created with Stephen Merchant, is simply one of the best television series of all time (cue Kanye West: Of All Time!!!), spawning offshoots around the world. It rightfully made him one of the leading lights of comedy, and his television follow-up Extras, subsequent stand-up, radio podcasts, children's books, and even last year's underrated flick Ghost Town, have only solidified his reputation as one of the funniest men alive. His writing-directing debut, The Invention of Lying, has received solid reviews across the board, as the wonderfully rich premise - what if, in a world without lying, one man started to lie - leads to some satirical and surprising results. Here's the thing, however: although The Invention of Lying may be sold as a Gervais project/vehicle, it's a actually a collaboration between the comedian and his co-writer and co-director Matthew Robinson. »

The Invention Of Lying – Martyn’s Review

28 September 2009 8:10 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

To his credit, on the surface, fame and money do not seem to be so important to Ricky Gervais. He’s got both, but there’s an insouciance in his attitude towards celebrity and the media circus. It’s not his reason for getting out of bed in a morning – it’s the work. However discerning he is with regards to the endless courting by Hollywood, he has avoided taking the road-most-lucrative, in favour of concentrating on projects he cares about and occasional cameos in the likes of Night at the Museum and its sequel.

That’s all fine and well. The striking fact remains – Gervais is not a proper actor – he’s a comedian who co-created a seminal piece of British television. The offers, of course, flooded in nonetheless.

Quite often in his directorial feature debut The Invention of Lying (co-directed with Matthew Robinson) it is painful watching him »

Dwayne Johnson as a Fairy Posters

22 September 2009 7:46 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

A couple of early posters for Dwayne Johnson’s latest, the kiddie comedy “The Tooth Fairy”. What’s it all about? My guess is that Johnson is a uber tough guy with a secret heart of gold, who learns to let go of his steely exterior to appreciate life and what not. A kid is probably involved as well. Once you read the brief plot outline below, the whole thing sounds like a bad South Park episode. In fact, I’m sure I remember they did something about a hockey coach and some ill kids once… A bad deed on the part of a tough minor-league hockey player (Johnson) results in an unusual sentence: He must serve one week as a real-life tooth fairy. Johnson is the fairy. Helping him out are Ashley Judd, Julie Andrews, Billy Crystal, Brandon T. Jackson, Josh Emerson, Alex Ferris, Juno Ruddell, and Stephen Merchant. »

Ricky Gervais Compares His Cemetery Junction to Saturday Night Fever

18 September 2009 9:34 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Ricky Gervais' The Invention of Lying opens October 2, but the British comedian is already working on his next project. Cemetery Junction re-teams him with The Office and Extras co-creator and director Stephen Merchant. Gervais describes their first big-screen collaboration to Collider as following "the minutia of human behavior".

I suppose it's about class. It's a romantic drama I suppose. It's funny though. It's sort of a return to what Steve and I do best ... the minutia of human behavior. It's set in the early '70s and it's about a group of twenty-somethings that try to escape that stifling small town sort of mentality. One of the lines that inspired us is from [Bruce Springsteen's] "Thunder Road." It's a town full of losers and we're pulling out of here to win. It's like our Saturday Night Fever. Gervais says the movie is definitely inspired by his own life.

Well, everything you do is autobiographical. »
