The Hobbit Casting Begins This Week

11 hours ago | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

When rumors hit the Net last week that the highly-anticipated adaptation of The Hobbit was being delayed a full year, it wasn’t good news for fans who are dying to see this film on the big-screen. However, we were right to treat it as a rumor, as soon afterward, producer Peter Jackson debunked the rumor, saying that as far as he’s concerned there’s been no delay and the film (Part 1) is still on course for a December 2011 release.

So, with that out of the way, one of the biggest questions hovering over The Hobbit is that of who will bring the characters of the classic fantasy tale to life, most importantly (I think you’ll agree) the role of Bilbo Baggins. Clearly, with the story taking place six decades before The Fellowship of the Ring, they can’t use Ian Holm again. Ian McKellen has said in »

The Last Station trailer: big beards, big names and big, bad gold letters

16 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The trailer for this starry drama about the last year of Leo Tolstoy's life does a good job of flogging the film. But then the credits start rolling. Anna Pickard cringes

Christopher Plummer appears to have moved into a new phase in his career: the wacky beard phase.

2009 saw him model the matted, rugged look in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

For 2010, he's outdone himself.

The Last Station is the story of a rich old man (Plummer's big-bearded Tolstoy, for that is who he's playing) who seems to be besieged by nefarious sycophants (the kind who drink a lot of black tea and hold polite intellectual debates for hours at a time in the garden).

The main focus of the story seems to be on the relationship with his wife, an emotionally-fraught Helen Mirren. Here she is, emoting, reliably.

And, of course, the whole thing shall be seen through the eyes of a naive, »

Tales from ‘Star Wars’: Spunk, the stupid stormtrooper

21 hours ago | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Every movie has scenes removed from the final cut for many reasons: the film was running too long, the dialogue wasn’t flowing together or the scene just didn’t seem right. Editing happens and I not only understand that, I think it’s necessary. However, I discovered an entire character was removed from Star Wars, and I think it’s high time he was given his due. Can you imagine being cut out of the most popular film franchise in history? It had to sting. He probably cried himself to sleep every night and drowned his sorrows in Slurpees and corn nuts. So, no longer allowing this injustice, and despite what Lucas might think, let me introduce to you Spunk, the Stupid Stormtrooper…

(first Spunk scene cut)

Darth Vader: He is here.

Governor Tarkin: Obi-Wan Kenobi? What makes you think so?

Got Freaky Ears? Kinda on the Midget Size? Peter Jackson is Casting for the Hobbit.

22 hours ago | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Of course, having freaky ears and being a tad on the short side isn’t a priority, not with the kids and their newfangled computer doohickeys that they have to work with these days. The good news from Middle Earth is that auditions for “The Hobbit” have officially commenced, with producer Peter Jackson and director Guillermo Del Toro firmly in charged of choosing the actors for the role. As with the previous “Lord of the Rings” movies, the producer/director won’t be looking for big, famous names to fill any roles, the franchise being bigger than any movie star. But according to Jackson, one role is too big for just anyone: Gandalf, who will once again be played by Ian McKellen. Also according to Jackson, Internet rumors that “Wanted” star James McAvoy has been approached by the studio for a key role in the upcoming fantasy epic is untrue. »

A Look at the Potential 2010 Oscar Category Straddlers

7 December 2009 3:14 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Nathaniel over at The Film Experience just published a post discussing the potential confusion over a few Oscar contenders whose performances may be confused for lead performances when they are actually supporting and vice versa. His list, however, doesn't include one I just watched yesterday, but first for his... Melanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz and Brad Pitt in Inglourious Basterds Anthony Mackie in The Hurt Locker Woody Harrelson in The Messenger Christian McKay in Me and Orson Welles Jake Gyllenhaal in Brothers I don't think he needs to worry much about Melanie Laurent or Brad Pitt, both of which are obviously supporting if you ask me. Or Jake Gyllenhaal, although I wouldn't mind seeing Gyllenhaal get a nod for Brothers considering I thought his was the best performance in it... but for what category? Lionsgate has placed him in the Best Supporting Actor category, but in reality all three (Tobey Maguire »

Hobbit casting happens

7 December 2009 1:37 PM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

While we probably won't hear official names for a while longer, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson are now searching for humans to become small for their live-action adaptation(s) of Tolkien's The Hobbit. Wide auditions commence this week for every role in the film (except Gandalf, which Sir Ian McKellan incontrovertibly owns). Jackson dismissed earlier rumors that James McAvoy, Daniel Radcliffe or David Tennant (shame, that) had been approached to play diminutive adventurer Bilbo Baggins,... »

'The Hobbit' Auditioning 'Unknown Actors', Tom Waits Said Among the Candidates

6 December 2009 11:29 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Peter Jackson has given an update on his upcoming movie project, "The Hobbit". Being met by IGN at a cocktail reception for his new film "The Lovely Bones", the filmmaker informed that casting directors for the adventure movie have been auditioning "unknown actors" for the role of Bilbo Baggins.

Previously, there were some actors who have been linked to the lead role, like Daniel Radcliffe, Martin Freeman, James McAvoy, and David Tennant. When asked if he could clarify who, among those names, does not have the possibility to play Bilbo, Jackson said some of them were not under consideration. However, he refused to say who had been ruled out because he didn't want anyone to figure anything out via process of elimination.

Additionally, Ain't It Cool News has added another name among the candidates to play Bilbo. According to the site, a trusted source has told them that Tom Waits »

Monthly Movie Preview – December 2009

3 December 2009 1:53 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

This is going to be a great month. No matter whether these big and small movies fall flat on their faces or not there’s going to be plenty to choose from – especially for those who want to keep up with important films.

First up is Avatar, one of the biggest gambles of this decade. Will the same kind of crowd that saw The Dark Knight or Transformers multiple times venture to movie theatres to see a 150-minute-long 3-D film that features tall blue creatures? It’s up in the air.

Which reminds me of a few more titles that should be worth checking out, one of them being Jason Reitman’s new film with George Clooney. The drama-comedy about a man who fires people for a living has been getting great buzz from its successful festival runs, with Oscar talk flying around as smoothly as paper airplanes.

Oscar MythBusting: One Day They'll Be Nominated!

2 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Most fans of established actors believe that one day their favorite will be nominated for an Oscar. In 2009 campaigns hopes are particularly high for Sandra Bullock, Alfred Molina, Colin Firth and Christopher Plummer. Fans of James McAvoy and Sam Rockwell still hold out longshot hope. But guess what? The odds are, generally speaking, against them on February 2nd (two months hence!) when the lucky 20 are called.

Most actors aren't ever nominated for the big prize. People seemed surprise to read in an old Oscar Mythbusting column I wrote years ago that the majority of nominated actors (approximately 67%) never receive a second nomination. But I did the research and it's true. Even less likely than a second nomination: a first one. Consider this...

The following (living) legends have still never been nominated despite rich bodies of work and several classic films or exuberantly praised performances: Mia Farrow, Isabelle Huppert, Christopher Plummer and Donald Sutherland. »

Nope, none other than Gerard Butler, who, as the recently named favourite Hollywood Brit (see Related Content, right) is preparing to wave his Scottish flag in a bid to attract top talent to the north. »

The Satellites Have Launched. What Are They Orbiting?

30 November 2009 6:10 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The Satellites (formerly Golden) have announced their 2009 nominations for what it's worth. And you might be screaming "not very much".

It's hard to know what to make of this Golden Globe splinter group. There is never much of a narrative thread in their nominations. You can't sense from year to year a type of film they like or whatnot. Which makes them feel a bit suspect. They also do very strange things which you're about to see if you read their nominations. They never get much attention and yet they keep plugging away. This year they were especially kind to 2012 (who knew?), Nine and The Stoning of Soraya M. But they were downright rude to the sci-fi drama Moon which received zero nominations despite their lack of aversion to sci-fi films. I mention this because the moon is a natural satellite and the Satellites are artificial. Maybe they're jealous. What they're orbiting we know not. »
