Tracking Shot November 2009: Beginners, Black Swan, Let Me In

2 November 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- At the beginning of every month, Ioncinema.com's "Tracking Shot" features a handful of projects that we feel are worth signaling out and that are moments away from lensing. As we get closer to holiday dates productions tend to drop, so this November we are keeping tabs on only a handful of projects. Mike Mills is finally getting to work on his sophomore feature which would see Ewan McGregor play a young man rocked by two announcements from his elderly father (Christopher Plummer)…one, that he has terminal cancer, and two, that he’s coming out of the closet. One more name will join the cast - perhaps the age of Brendan Fraser when he was in Gods and Monsters. Filming is set for L.A. Not much production info has been divulged on Darren Aronofsky's next film. Word was that production would begin this month and that »

Review: The Soloist - Strung Up

29 September 2009 10:18 AM, PDT | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Director: Joe Wright Starring: Robert Downey Jr. - Steve Lopez; Jamie Foxx - Nathaniel Ayers It would be crass to try and draw a parallel between The Soloist’s schizophrenic homeless cellist Nathaniel Ayers and the movie itself, but Joe Wright’s latest creation certainly does exhibit the signs of cinematic bipolarity. At times the film hits all the right notes, with moving scenes played out by its two excellent leads, but just as often it lets itself down with inattentive scripting, trivial plot tangents, and an inability to fully develop that upon which its success must hang – the relationship between those very leads. As such, given the fascinating true-story material on which it’s based (the ‘real’ Steve Lopez’s 2008 book The Soloist), the stellar cast on display, and a talent young director working with his biggest ever budget, The Soloist must be seen as a disappointment, if not an unmitigated one. »

Stanley Tucci Goes "Burlesque" with Cher and Christina Aguilera

24 September 2009 2:23 PM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

This is a movie we've been following closely since May (See Cher Joins Christina Aguilera in Musical "Burlesque" and Christina Aguilera to Star in Titillating Musical "Burlesque"). Why? Because it's being called "Showgirls" the Musical starring Cher and Christina Aguilera.

But I'm sure it's not going to be as campy as "Showgirls" gosh darn it!

Now, Stanley Tucci is joining Cher and Christina Aguilera in the film to be directed by Steve Antin.

Antin also wrote the script which was polished by Susannah Grant ("Erin Brockovich"! See? Not campy).

Aguilera will play an ambitious small town Iowa girl with a big voice who finds love, family and success in a Los Angeles burlesque club. Cher will play Tess, a former dancer who takes the small town girl under her wing. Tucci will star as the manager of the club and the best friend of Tess. And they will all sing and dance! »

Stanley Tucci Feeling Burlesque

24 September 2009 12:55 AM, PDT | www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news »

The latest rage are musicals, as all the best actors seem to be leaning towards them. Okay, it's a bit of an exaggeration, but slightly true. The latest victim -- don't take that in a bad way -- is Stanley Tucci, who has agreed to join the cast of Burlesque. To be honest, this project was in need of some testosterone.

Stanley Tucci Sings Burlesque

Screen Gems has hired Tucci to star alongside Cher and Christina Aguilera in Burlesque, the musical to be directed by Steve Antin.

Based off a script by Antin, though revised by Susannah Grant, Burlesque will have Aguilera play an ambitious small-town girl with a big voice who finds success in a neo-burlesque club reminiscent of the nightclub in Bob Fosse's "Cabaret." Tucci will play the manager of the Sunset Boulevard club and the best friend and confidante of Tess (Cher), a former dancer who »

As for the remake itself, Crawford promises some contemporary twists on the 1984 original, which cast Kevin Bacon as a big-city transplant to a small town in which dancing and rock music have been banned. Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Soloist’ Wastes Powerful Story, Great Actors

11 August 2009 10:22 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Stars Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. do absolutely nothing wrong in Joe Wright’s “The Soloist,” now on Blu-Ray and DVD, and there’s more than enough inherent power in the story of a musical genius lost to mental illness and the horrible way we treat the homeless in this country for a quality drama, but this cinematic solo misses too many notes to have the impact that it should have with this much talent involved.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0 The cast & crew list for “The Soloist” is remarkable enough that the film almost opened the AFI Film Festival last year based on pedigree alone. Then someone saw the movie and Joe Wright’s third drama (after “Pride & Prejudice” and “Atonement”) was pushed from Oscar season to April. We should have known something was wrong then.

The Soloist was released on Blu-Ray on August 4th, 2009.

Cher Joins Christina Aguilera In ‘Burlesque’

Call it a hunch, but I think “Burlesque” already has its place in film history set. Not only will it be the acting debut of Christina Aguilera, but the modern musical has signed on the music icon of all icons: the one and only Cher. Yeah. It’s going to be flamboyant.

According to Variety, Aguilera will play an ambitious small-town girl fresh from the cornfields of Iowa. Possessing one heck of a voice (hey, it’s Aguilera) she goes West to pursue her singing and dancing dreams. The aspiring star winds up in a neo-burlesque club on Sunset Boulevard that’s run by Tess (Cher), a former dancer who struggles to keep the club open and gives the young girl a chance to become a star.

What do you do when Zac Efron walks out on your movie? Easy, get in a lookalike! Paramount Pictures announced yesterday that Chase Crawford would be taking on the lead role of Ren McCormack in their remake of popular 1984 musical, which will be produced and directed by Kenny Ortega (Dirty Dancing, High School Musical).

Efron was originally pegged to play Ren McCormack but dropped out not long after the theatrical release of High School Musical 3: Senior Year to pursue other acting opportunities.

Zaden and Meron recently teamed to produce both "Hairspray" and "Chicago", which was musical in 34 years to win the Best Picture Oscar at the 2002 Academy Awards. The film will also be produced by Dylan Sellers (Agent Cody Banks), and Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) has penned the recently green-lit script.

Joe Wright's The Soloist Exploits the Skid Row Community

11 May 2009 9:31 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Two Fridays ago on the first day of its release, I went to an early afternoon screening of the film The Soloist. I'd been eager to see it since it focuses on the real life relationship between Los Angeles Times journalist Steve Lopez and Nathaniel Anthony Ayers, a homeless member of Los Angeles' Skid Row community suffering from debilitating mental illness. In the story, as told in Lopez' columns in the La Times, in his book, and in the screenplay by Susannah Grant, Lopez first meets middle-aged Nathaniel Ayers in downtown Los Angeles in front of a statue of Beethoven where Ayers is playing a two string violin. In that serendipitous meeting Lopez discovers that as a youth Ayers had been a gifted student at Juilliard, New York's prestigious school for the performing arts. This revelation... »

Christina Aguilera To Make Big Screen Debut with Burlesque

5 May 2009 10:15 PM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Grammy Award winner Christina Aguilera will try to add acting to her list of talents in the upcoming film Burlesque under the direction of Steven Antin.

Variety reports, Aguilera will play a small town girl who heads to L.A. to perform in a neo-burlesque club where she finds love, family and success. The contemporary musical script was written by Steven Antin and revisions were made by writer Susannah Grant, best known for Erin Brockovich. Filming is scheduled to start later this year.

A Screen Gems executive commented that this project was created with Aguilera in mind. That hardly seems surprising given the musical nature of the film. I can’t help but picture the “Lady Marmalade” music video, which may have been on the producers mind as well.
