'What really buys you freedom is being successful. So long as you deliver, they leave you alone'
For someone best known for Shooting the Past, a television drama apparently so slow and un-televisual that BBC executives begged him to speed it up, Stephen Poliakoff is a very fast talker. Sentences tumble into one another, thoughts jerkily digress, regroup and change their angle of attack. Ideas flit in and out of focus as all the while a plastic drinking straw is furiously twiddled between his fingers. Outlining details of his latest venture, Glorious 39, his first feature film for 12 years, Poliakoff makes glancing references to George W Bush, Bulldog Drummond, the history of the wire tap and Norfolk's evergreen oaks in expressing his fascination and horror at the aristocratic and establishment appeasers who, in the run-up to the second world war, mounted a desperate last effort to do a deal with »

Stephen Poliakoff's antipathy towards the peacemakers of 1939 reveals cinema's love of a futile struggle
The movies have played their part in giving appeasement a bad name. Conflict, not surrender, is the essence of drama. Hence, Princess Leia can't be allowed to knuckle under to the Evil Empire, whatever fate resistance might precipitate. On the big screen, plucky fighters against the odds are celebrated in a galaxy of westerns, war films and thrillers. Those who decide that discretion is the better part of valour get Le Chagrin et la Pitié.
Yet in the animal kingdom, appeasement is a routine behavioural strategy. Our fellow creatures find themselves in contention with each other far more frequently than we do. Nonetheless, they fight to the death less often than you would think. Instead, they will size up a rival and assess their chances of beating him in combat. When they conclude that they are outclassed, »

Romola Garai has praised her Glorious 39 director Stephen Poliakoff for respecting her profession. Speaking to Digital Spy, Garai said that she admired Poliakoff for not treating his actors like "tools". "He's one of the few directors I've worked with who has a great love for actors," she explained. "They're not the difficult tools, they enable him and help his creative process. "Writer/directors are, for me, the most inspiring people to work for because they are the person on set that knows the answer to all the questions. They have (more) »

This is an enjoyable conspiracy thriller in the manner of John Frankenheimer's Seven Days in May, starring the fetching Romola Garai as Anne, politically naive movie star and adopted daughter of a rich Tory MP with a country estate in Norfolk, who, in the long hot summer of 1939, stumbles across an establishment plot involving the Sis and the aristocracy. They'll stop at nothing, including blackmail and assassination, to keep Britain from going to war, and when war breaks out, to making peace with Nazi Germany. There's a remarkable British cast, and the film holds up well until the last couple of reels. But there's some clunking dialogue, and as history it's fuzzy and unconvincing. The nods towards Hitchcock remind us that in 1938 the Master made an allegorical masterpiece about Munich and appeasement, his greatest British movie, The Lady Vanishes.

Stephen Poliakoff’s dark, labyrinthine account of England’s tumble into the Second World War was premiered at the London Film Festival this year and we were impressed by it.
As today sees the film’s release I wanted to take another look at this drama, to see if it lives up to its name.
Glorious 39 is not as glamorous as the marketing would have us believe. The posters suggest a costume drama about the brilliant and carefree life of British Aristocracy in the world of “Jeeves and Wooster”, with the faint whiff of a world war in the air. Instead, the new film by Stephen Poliakoff turns into an interesting and almost Hitchcockian conspiracy thriller.
“Almost” – because it seems that the director can not decide what type of film he is directing and keeps swinging between historic political drama and conspiracy thriller. As a result the film’s »

Anne Hathaway's representative addressed the rumor which linked the "Rachel Getting Married" star to the fourth installment of "Spider-Man" series. The publicist told EW, "There are no negotiations underway" but said nothing on whether the 27-year-old actress has met the movie's producer or not.
Anne is the latest star who has been rumored to star in "Spider-Man 4." Previously, Rachel McAdams, Romola Garai and Julia Stiles have also been connected to the upcoming movie. While Rachel has debunked the issue, there has been no confirmation from both Romola and Julia.
"Spider-Man 4" itself is scheduled to hit theater across United States on May 6, 2011. Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and Dylan Baker are confirmed to reprise their roles as Peter Parker, Mary Jane Watson and Doctor Curt Connors respectively. Sam Raimi, meanwhile, will once again be sitting behind the lens as its director.

Romola Garai has admitted that she had to restrain herself from interviewing her Glorious 39 co-star David Tennant. The British actress told Digital Spy: "I unfortunately only had one scene with David but he was lovely. I was very excited to meet him. I spent as much time off set going, 'And what was it like doing Doctor Who?!' I tried not to interview him." Discussing Tennant's stardom, Garai said: "It's not something I could do. I see people who do it well and just really admire them. (more) »

Four awesome young actresses are reported/rumored to be positioning themselves for a possible role in the next Spiderman movie. The character in contention: The Black Cat.
But before we go any further, is this newsworthy? Definitely. While it maybe just a fictional character, Black Cat is quite interesting and intriguing. She's been related to Spiderman in the past and her descent into the world of crime is worth a good look. Has casting actually started? No confirmation yet from the studio, but with the names of the actresses being mentioned, fans are, indeed, getting excited.
Two of these fab actresses are known for both period and contemporary films - Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married/Becoming Jane) and Romola Garai ( Inside I'm Dancing/Atonement), while the other two - Julia Stiles and Rachel McAdams are more 'inclined' to portray modern characters, or so it seems... As of this writing, McAdams is already out of contention. »

Stephen Poliakoff returns to the cinema after a 10-year absence and, by jingo, he appears to have secured the ghost of John Buchan to be his chaperone. Glorious 39 is a ripping, old-school conspiracy thriller, played out in the fraught run-up to the second world war. It gives us dotty aunts and dodgy spies, showbiz starlets and imperilled young firebrands. There are secret documents in the outhouse and a previously overlooked reel of film footage in which a wild-eyed actor (Hugh Bonneville) points the way to a dark and terrible truth. Oh, and there's Romola Garai, too, scampering from country estate to London attic with Neville Chamberlain's appeasers snapping constantly at her heels. Poliakoff invites us to run along with her; to relish the ride and ignore those mounting implausibilities. Pause for breath, even for an instant, and you risk being tied in knots by the film's endless, gaudy contrivances. »

Yesterday I presented you with a list of Five Actresses Who Should Play The Black Cat in Spider-Man 4, and no where on there did I mention Anne Hathaway. That said, it seems as if Marvel and Sony Pictures aren't listening to me. At least, according to a report from Nikki Finke. Finke, who has long had sources inside Marvel Entertainment, is reporting that producers are very interested in casting Hathaway in a "starring role" in Spider-Man 4. This is the fourth major rumor we've seen reported in the last week related to Spider-Man 4 and the casting of The Black Cat. First was Rachel McAdams, then came Romola Garai, and finally Julia Stiles. McAdams denied the report herself, Garai's rumor has not been confirmed nor denied and no one has been able to get comment from the Stiles camp about her alleged audition. It's becoming tiresome to talk about these casting rumors, as »

This week Film Weekly goes from Britain on the eve of the second world war with Stephen Poliakoff's Glorious 39, to the American midwest in the 60s with the Coen brothers' A Serious Man, to the fangtastical environs of contemporary Washington state in The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
First up, Jason Solomons meets rising star Romola Garai, who adds to an impressive CV (Atonement, Angel, Vanity Fair) by appearing in almost every scene in Glorious 39, a conspiracy thriller based on true events in Chamberlain's government. She tells Jason how the film plays with the nature of the truth and why it's the "twisted sister" to her breakthrough film I Capture the Castle, plus how she can never live down Dirty Dancing 2.
Xan Brooks then joins Jason to review the week's key releases: the Coen brothers' fascinating, brilliantly acted A Serious Man, Matt Damon in Steven Soderbergh's "too clever" The Informant! »

Yet another actress is reported to be under consideration for a possible role in the next Spider-Man film.
This time it's Anne Hathaway joining the queue of female contenders.
Her previous credits include Brokeback Mountain, The Devil Wears Prada and Becoming Jane.
According to a report by Movie Scoop, and subsequently Deadline Hollywood, producers of Spider-Man 4 have approached the 27-year-old actress to star in the film.
No role was specified but fan speculation suggests it's Felicia Hardy aka the villainous love interest Black Cat.
Movie Scoop says, however, that the star is in line to play a character called Valeria while Deadline Hollywood confirms Hathaway won't replace Kirsten Dunst who is already cast to reprise the role of Mary-Jane Watson.
Hathaway is the fourth actress to be linked to the film following earlier rumours centring on Rachel McAdams, Romola Garai and Julia Stiles.

The star of Stephen Poliakoff's forthcoming Glorious 39 on his neuroses, playing educated toffs and why he digs David Hare
"A machiavellian dandy . . . Pure coldheartedness . . . Fabulously insincere." As I read out reviews of an old Bill Nighy performance, the actor grimaces and drums his knuckles on the table. "If ever a face was made for villainy, it's Bill Nighy's," I continue. "Wow," he murmurs. "Nighy's decadently long jaw and narrow, sneaky eyes serve him well . . ." He snorts, amused. "Sneaky eyes! Long decadent jaw! My God. I didn't know I had a decadent jaw."
Perhaps it is how Glorious 39 unfolds around him that makes you never quite trust Nighy as Alexander Keyes, a devoted father and aristocratic Conservative MP in Stephen Poliakoff's sumptuous new thriller about appeasement, set on the eve of the second world war. But perhaps Nighy has a singular talent for projecting unreliability into charming characters. »

Ever since Rachel McAdams laughed off the rumors that she would be cast as Black Cat in Spider-Man 4, the role has become one of the hottest topics around. McAdams never auditioned or met with producers about it, but Romola Garai did. I like Garai (the grown-up Saoirse Ronan in Atonement), but there's not a whole lot of name recognition there.
Then there was news that Julia "Furious" Stiles had a chat about the role, although I just have a hard time seeing that. I certainly can't see that selection over McAdams, at any rate, who apparently was never asked. And now Nikki Finke has learned that Anne Hathaway has been "approached" for the part of Black Cat. Hathaway...Dunst...way to stock up on overrated actresses, Sam Raimi. »

Anne Hathaway is the latest name attached to a possible role in Spider-Man 4. The way things are going, just about every actress will have been linked to the latest Spidey franchise outing by the time the thing actually starts shooting. We've been through Romola Garai, Rachel McAdams and, even more recently, Julia Stiles (below), who was reported to have met the film's casting team. And now Deadline Hollywood's Nikki Finke is reporting that Anne Hathaway has been approached for a starring role, but isn't replacing Kirsten Dunst as...
