Lisa Kudrow gets ready for "Rapture"

27 October 2009 2:00 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Lisa Kudrow, whom I’ve crushed on since she kissed Rachel and said, “I’ve had better,” has always been a friend to the Lgbt community. And her latest project is no exception.

Kudrow and Dan Bucatinsky, who worked with her on The Comeback, are developing a comedy for Showtime based on the book Why the Long Face? by Craig Chester. The TV series, Rapture, is the story of Chester growing up as the gay son of born-again Christian parents.

If you don’t recognize Chester’s name, you may remember him from playing Nathan Leopold in Swoon or Adam in Adam & Steve, which he also directed.

Ok, I didn’t like Adam & Steve, but that’s beside the point.

Chester’s book is full of both humor and sadness, in much the same way Augusten Burroughs’ books are. Chester isn’t nearly as funny as Burroughs, but the story »

Lisa Kudrow and Dan Bucatinsky Engage in Rapture

21 October 2009 5:18 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

In a story from Variety, Lisa Kudrow and Dan Bucatinsky are putting together a comedy for Showtime that centers around the memoir by actor-writer Craig Chester. Don Roos is going to direct if the project is tapped to be a pilot.

In Chester's 2003 memoir "Why the Long Face?: The Adventures of a Truly Independent Actor" we are taken into his world "as the gay son in a family of born-again Christian parents and his experiences as" an actor "in the indie film world."

The TV show, which is now being called Rapture, would be from the point of view of 9-year-old Chester who is discovering his sexual orientation while handling his devout mom who has visions of Christ juxtaposed with a rock 'n' roll guitar player father who fears his wife is losing it.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: August 6, 2009

16 August 2009 10:17 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

This week:

Aliens invade the box office with District 9; get ready to see more Saw; Elvis talks Bubba Nosferatu; St Elmo’s Fire gets remade; Dennis Quaid and Tim Allen join Ron Shelton in Q School, while Maggie Q looks for a Priest; Godzilla may be going on the warpath again; Sony takes a dose of Doctor Parnassus and Wall Street 2 adds another cast member.

Box Office

It looks like originality won out at the box office for a change. Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 banked a cool $37 million over the weekend. The Peter Jackson produced Sci-Fi film had a negative cost of just $30 million and with great reviews it looks like this could do well in the long run too.

GI Joe: The Rise Of Cobra had an average drop from last weekend’s surprisingly high take. Down just around 60% (which is pretty middle of the road »

Welcome to your Friday morning television briefing. ABC has given a script order with a sizable penalty to a contemporary series take on 1985 feature film St. Elmo's Fire. Project, which comes from Sony Pictures Television, will be written/executive produced by Dan Bucatinsky and executive produced by Topher Grace, Jamie Tarses, and Joel Schumacher. The series would revolve around a group of six friends--three men, three women--who hang out together at a Georgetown restaurant called St. Elmo's Bar & Grill. "I feel it is time to re-create Friends in the hourlong genre and feel like this is the perfect opportunity," said Bucatinsky. ""More than anything, the movie evokes a feeling that doesn't go away, the feeling of bonding with your friends who become your surrogate family." Joel Schumacher's St. Elmo's Fire to Become a TV Show

14 August 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

ABC is in the work on a dramedy series project based on "St Elmo's Fire," the 1985 movie that launched the filmmaking career of Joel Schumacher (Batman and Robin, 8Mm). The original film was one of the defining movies of the Brat Pack genre. It starred Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Mare Winningham as friends who had just graduated from Georgetown University and chronicled their adjustment to adulthood. The series version will use the movie as a takeoff point and as an inspiration as it introduces six new friends: three boys and three girls. What will remain is the setting -- Georgetown and St. Elmo's Bar and Restaurant, now called St. Elmo's Bar and Grill, where the friends hang out. And if the set-up looks a little bit like "Friends," that's Ok with writer Dan Bucatinsky. "I feel it is time to re-create »

St. Elmo's Fire Reignited For The Small Screen

14 August 2009 5:21 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

St. Elmo's Fire has been reignited - TV bosses have signed a deal to adapt the Brat Pack movie classic into a small screen series.

The original 1985 picture followed the lives of seven pals as they prepared for life after university, and kick-started the careers of Demi Moore, Rob Lowe and Emilio Estevez.

Now, the film is being remade for U.S. TV after executives at America's ABC network agreed a deal to revise the comedy-drama.

The show will focus on the same topics as the film, and will be set in the St. Elmo's Bar & Restaurant, just like the movie.

ABC bosses are hoping the pal-focused plot will fill the gap left by hit sitcom Friends, which ended in 2004 after 10 seasons.

Executive producer Dan Bucatinsky says, "I feel it is time to re-create Friends in the hour-long genre and feel like this is the perfect opportunity."

A group of unknown actors will be cast in the main roles, according to Daily Variety. »

"St Elmo's Fire" Series Project Headed to ABC

13 August 2009 10:13 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

This coming season old eighties hits are all the rage at the broadcast networks, especially ABC.  Already slated to start this fall are Eastwick (based on the same novel as the 80s movie) and V on ABC, and another remake of Parenthood for NBC.  And now it appears that St. Elmo's Fire, one of the defining Brat Pack movies of the eighties, could be headed to our TV screens.

In reality, the dramedy series project has received a script commitment, and has signed Dan Bucatinsky on to write it.  Joel Schumacher, who co-wrote and directed the original movie, is also on board as an executive producer, along with Topher Grace and Jamie Tarses.

The series will use the movie as a starting point, and keep the setting the same, Georgetown University and St. Elmo's Bar & Grill.  But six new friends will be introduced, three girls and three boys, and through »

Lisa Kudrow’s ‘Web Therapy’ Back For Season 2, Courteney Cox Jumps In

23 June 2009 11:11 AM, PDT | Tubefilter.tv | See recent Tubefilter News news »

Lisa Kudrow's Streamy-nominated web series Web Therapy is coming back for a second season today on LStudio.com. Kudrow returns as online therapist Fiona Wallice known for her curt, questionably-legal three-minute patient sessions via iChat. A second season, even for a web series, means plenty of notable guest stars, including Kudrow's former Friends co-star Courtney Cox, who joins the cast for a few "sessions." Her three-episode run will debut on July 6th. Also on the chat-couch this time are Alan Cumming, Steven Weber, Julie Claire, Dan Bucatinsky, and Victor Garber. Kudrow has apparently been loving the chance to call her own shots with the project, as she once again works with producing partners Dan Bucatinsky and Don Roos (who also directs the series) at Is it or Isn’t It Entertainment.
