tMF Fast Forward: Keira Knightley is victorious! Will play Eliza Dolittle in My Fair Lady!

25 October 2009 3:48 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

Probably one of the most coveted roles in film, My Fair Lady's Eliza Dolittle already has a history of being a role most sought after by big stars in cinema - Audrey Hepburn, Julie Andrews and Elizabeth Taylor, among others. Just now, The Telegraph reported that in the latest film adaptation, Keira Knightley was cast as the ambitious, working class girl who started out as a flower seller and became the toast of high society.

Details as follows:

"Joe and Keira are looking forward to working together again immensely," says a friend of the 37-year-old director.

In August, I reported that Knightley had been forced to compete with Johansson, 24, for the role of the Cockney flower seller played by Audrey Hepburn in the 1964 film.

"I have two actresses as potential Elizas, one British, the other American," said Sir Cameron Mackintosh, who is producing the film with Duncan Kenworthy, at the time. »

Dvds: New Miss Marple Doesn't Slay Me and More

5 August 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

I never imagined Basil Rathbone would ever be surpassed when it came to playing Sherlock Holmes. But surely now Jeremy Brett is the definitive detective. For some, Margaret Rutherford holds the same place of honor when it comes to Miss Marple, the deceptively sweet and mild-mannered little old lady with a keen eye for clues. Others give TV's Joan Hickson first place of honor. But we can all agree the recent relaunch of Miss Marple with the excellent actress Geraldine McEwan was a flop. Miss Marple with a long-lost love? One shudders. They've started from scratch (again) because they know mystery buffs will line up and watch anything with stately homes, British accents...and murder. But surely they're pushing it with the desultory batch of episodes in Agatha Christie Marple Series 4 ($59.99; Acorn). The new Miss Marple is Julia McKenzie, of... »

Daniel Radcliffe Can't Wait for Sherlock Holmes

17 July 2009 2:51 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes isn't due in theaters until December 25, but fans are already excited about the movie. Count Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince's Daniel Radcliffe among them. He told Entertainment Weekly that Holmes is the movie he's "most looking forward to seeing" this year.

Apparently Radcliffe is a "huge fan" of the British Sherlock Holmes TV show starring Jeremy Brett. He says Brett's Holmes is a great example of playing "an over-the-top character without ever being over-the-top himself." We hope Radcliffe knows that Robert Downey Jr. is Holmes this time around.

It's easy to be swept up into Radcliffe's enthusiasm after watching the latest trailer for Sherlock Holmes. Even a fickle New York audience applauded it. Check it out below:

trailer break: ‘Sherlock Holmes’

26 May 2009 9:09 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Oh my goodness. I think we always knew Sherlock Holmes was familiar with handcuffs, but did we suspect he was this, ahem, intimately familiar? Tee hee! This is Guy Ritchie’s reboot of the world’s first consulting detective -- the script is by Harry Potter producer Lionel Wigram, Simon Kinberg (who wrote the excellent Mr. & Mrs. Smith), and relative newcomers Michael Robert Johnson and Anthony Peckham -- and, wow, I am really psyched for it now. It looks sure to have sports, fighting, murder, revenge... all it needs is giants and pirates and it would be perfect. I’m content to settle for funny sexy stuff in place of true love. Now we wait for all the Conan Doyle purists to start complaining about how Holmes would never do this and Watson would never say that. Look, I love Conan Doyle’s Holmes, too, and he’s still there, »

DVD Playhouse—May 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Paramount Centennial Collection Paramount Studios releases two more classic titles from its library on special edition DVD: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is John Ford’s last masterpiece (although he would go on to direct two more very good films) from 1962: about an Eastern lawyer (James Stewart) who travels west only to find primal brutality in the form of sadistic bandit Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin, great as always) and pragmatic brutality in local rancher Tom Doniphon (John Wayne), each two sides of a coin that represent a way of life slowly dying out as Stewart’s modern brand of civilization tames the West. A perfect film, period. Howard HawksEl Dorado is essentially a remake of his earlier classic Rio Bravo, with John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and a young James Caan as lawmen joining forces against corrupt cattle barons. Great fun. Two disc sets. »

Jude Law defends changes to Sherlock Holmes movie

6 May 2009 9:31 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Jude Law, who plays Dr Watson in the new Sherlock Holmes movie, has explained the film's different portrayal of Arthur Conan Doyle's classic characters.

Guy Ritchie's film shows Holmes and Watson catching crooks with bare-fisted boxing, sword-fighting and martial arts. Holmes retains his traditional traits of sleuthing and disguises, but no longer snorts cocaine - in order to gain a family-friendly rating.

Law, who read Conan Doyle's works in preparation for his role, defended the changes. He told USA Today: "The physicality, the bare-knuckle fighting, the martial arts are all hinted at in the books. We just hold a magnifying glass over them.

"A word that Conan Doyle uses an awful lot is 'apprehended.' As in, 'Holmes and Watson apprehend the villain.' We get to show the apprehension."

The martial arts are specifically mentioned in Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes story The Adventure of the Empty House. »

18 March 2009 10:29 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Actress Natasha Richardson has died after a skiing accident in Mont Tremblant ski resort in Quebec. The accident happened on Monday while Richardson was taking a private skiing lesson.

According to reports, Richardson fell during a lesson on a beginners' slope, but initially felt unaffected by the incident. About an hour after she was returned to her hotel room, however, she complained of headaches. She was taken to Centre Hospitalier Laurentien in Ste-Agathe and later moved to Montreal's larger Sacré-Coeur hospital. On Tuesday she was transferred again to Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhatten. She passed away in the hospital on Wednesday, apparently from head injuries sustained in the accident.

After Richardson’s death was made public, Neeson’s publicist, Alan Nierob released the following statement.

"Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha. They are profoundly grateful for the support, »
