He immigrated with his family to Los Angeles in 1980 at the age of 16.

His ex-wife, Skylar Satenstein, dated Matt Damon in college. Later on, she became the inspiration for the character played by Minnie Driver in Good Will Hunting (1997), who was also named Skylar.

His father is Torben Ulrich who was a professional tennis player. Lars was a serious tennis player as a child.
