Even as it was considering a boycott of the major television networks, the NAACP announced its nominations for Image Awards Wednesday, which honor the movie and TV industries for their efforts to provide a positive image of blacks on the home and theater screens. In the film category, Universal's Best Man, The (1999/I) written and directed by Malcolm D. Lee, scored nine nominations, including two for best actor -- Taye Diggs and Morris Chestnut -- and two for best actress --Nia Long and Monica Calhoun. In the television categories, The Steve Harvey Show received five nominations, including one for star Steve Harvey. Today's (Thursday) Hollywood Reporter observed that NAACP leader Kweisi Mfume acknowledged the "irony" of the awards. Probabilities are something altogether different. And the probability right now is that we are making what we believe to be slow but steady progress on this issue." »
