CinemaSpy's Week-End TV Recap (Nov. 14)

14 November 2009 9:10 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

The big television news for the week preceding, was, of course, Fox's decision to cancel Dollhouse, a move not necessarily unexpected, but still lamented by fans of the show. Sadly, the writing had been on the wall from the beginning of the season—without a significant uptick in viewership, the series' life-expectancy would be short. It didn't happen...and it was. Dollhouse will return Dec. 4, with its series finale set for Jan. 22.

Fox's other genre series, Fringe, rebounded a bit to its pre-World Series numbers with a 3.7 rating/6 share. That equates to a 19 percent jump from the previous week, but still trails behind The CW, where the network's flagship skein, Smallville, finally regained some ground to tie its former Thursday night stablemate, Supernatural.

Over at ABC, V led all genre shows for the second week of sweeps, despite a more than 25 percent drop from its series premiere, earning a 6.6 rating/10 share, »

DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

'Bones' recap: Midget wrestling, phallic frustration, and the return of Gordon Gordon

13 November 2009 8:02 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

When I first saw photos of Booth in a wrestling ring with a little person, I feared we were looking at a mistake the size of last season's circus episode. I've never been so happy to be wrong. This could be my favorite hour of Season 5. The "midget wrestling" was a little wacky, but it produced a classic Brennan moment as she realized the Iron Leprechaun they were watching be defeated by Bumble Bee Man was not the real Iron Leprechaun, whose body they'd found in a sink hole: "Boo! That man is not The Iron Leprechaun! Boooo! Fake! Fake! »

'Bones' cast takes us behind the scenes (and the belt buckle)

12 November 2009 11:18 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Yes, it's November Sweeps, but we're already looking ahead to December episodes of Fox's Bones. The cast took photos for EW as they filmed the Dec. 3 hour, inspired by the gamer documentary The King of Kong, and Dec. 10's Christmas story, which David Boreanaz accurately describes as "a little sick." (A man dressed as Santa is blown up after a botched bank robbery. Note: This is also the episode that Emily Deschanel's sister Zooey guest stars as a distant relative of Brennan's invited to spend the holidays with Bones and her father. Welcome back, Ryan O'Neal.) 'The Crow' Remake Starts Casting

2 November 2009 9:25 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

The following seems like a non-story, but things have been quiet around the planned reboot of The Crow lately, so I figured, why not remind people it’s actually happening?

According to The Geek Files over at Coventry Telegraph, executives at Relativity Media are excited about the script turned in by director Stephen Norrington, and the project has entered the casting stages. The Crow, for those unfamiliar with the property, revolves around a rock musician murdered with his girlfriend; he returns from the dead one year later, seeking revenge on those responsible.

Originally a graphic novel, Alex Proyas directed the 1994 movie version starring Brandon Lee as the titular character. Three movie sequels and a TV show followed, but by 2005’s The Crow: Wicked Prayer, the series was going direct-to-video.

When interviewed, Norrington hinted his version of The Crow would be realistic and almost documentary-like. This would be a significant contrast from the gothic, »

Luke Goss and those rumours linking him to The Crow reboot

2 November 2009 7:20 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

We recently heard that the proposed new version of The Crow is entering the casting stage after the script - by Stephen Norrington, who will also direct - was well received by studio chiefs at Relativity Media.

The Crow centres on a rock musician who is murdered trying to rescue his girlfriend from thugs and returns from the dead a year later to exact revenge. (You can read more about the reboot here)

The character was previously seen in a 1994 film starring Brandon Lee; three sequels: The Crow: City of Angels in 1996, The Crow: Salvation in 2000, and The Crow: Wicked Prayer in 2005; and a TV series The Crow: Stairway to Heaven in 1998.

Rumours have linked Luke Goss to the lead role in the new film. Goss, a former member of boy band Bros, is well-versed in fantasy roles, having played vampire Nomak in Blade 2, the creature in »
