There's been overwhelming support for Bryan Singer in my recent poll asking whether he should return to the X-Men film series.
Thousands of people voted and 79 per cent picked 'yes', while 16 per cent said 'no' and 5 per cent were not sure.
Producers are keen to bring the director back in order to restore the 20th Century Fox franchise to the widely-received consistency and quality of his second film, X2: X-Men United.
X2 was written by Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, and Dougherty recently revealed the ideas he had for X3 before they had all left to make Superman Returns instead.
Fox hired first Matthew Vaughn, and then Brett Ratner, to take the reins on the third movie.
There are welcome moves to try get Singer and his team on board for one or more future X-Men movies.
Several films are in the pipeline: a Wolverine sequel being penned by Singer »

Going back to the old masters, going back to the classics is always illuminating. Someone like Alfred Hitchcock knew how to frame a film. He knew where he was putting his camera, and why it was there. As in North by Northwest he achieved one of the great visual representations of sex. Cary Grant lifts Eva Marie Saint up to bed, and then a train enters a tunnel. Not exactly subtle, but undeniably brilliant. My review after the jump.
North by Northwest is one of Hitchcock’s most pleasurable films. In his cycle of “wrong man on the run” films, which includes The 39 Steps and Foreign Correspondent, North by Northwest has one advantage over those others films: It stars Cary Grant. And Grant’s dapper persona adds a level of debonair to whatever he did. Here he stars as Roger Thornhill, who’s mistaken for secret agent George Kaplan. He »

The Tourist, which will tell the tale of an American tourist drawn into a plot of intrigue with a female Interpol agent, has had an increasingly hard time gearing up to launch into production this coming February. Avatar star Sam Worthington jumped ship a while back, along with director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, over “creative differences.”
Now, fan favorite Johnny Depp is in talks to be the titular tourist, and director Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men) is considering taking the reins. If Depp is indeed attached to the project, he’ll be performing alongside Angelina Jolie, so we’re in for a vortex of sexiness the likes of which the world has never seen.
Julian Fellowes (Vanity Fair) wrote the original script for The Tourist, with rewrites by Christopher McQuarrie and Jeffrey Nachmanoff.

Johnny Depp is in talks to star alongside Angelina Jolie in The Tourist, which would mark the first time these two mega stars have worked together.
The story, which was originally written by Julian Fellowes and has had rewrites by Christopher McQuarrie and Jeffrey Nachmanoff, would see Depp play an American tourist drawn into a web of intrigue by a female Interpol agent (Jolie) who is attempting to locate a criminal who was once her lover.
The role Depp is looking to fill was originally cast to Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation), but he dropped out recently over creative differences. Director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck also dropped out of the project, and now Alfonso Cuarón (Children Of Men) is in early talks to take over the director's chair. The film has gone through quite a few changes, as at one time Bharat Nalluri was attached to direct with Tom Cruise in the lead role. »

Johnny Depp, playing Sir James Matthew Barrie in "Finding Neverland", will collaborate with Angelina Jolie in the upcoming movie, "The Tourist", which production is scheduled to start early next year. Reportedly, Depp is still in talks to star with Jolie concerning his role as Jolie's fellow lead.
If the negotiation goes through, Depp will play as an American tourist. Depp's character gets mixed up by an interpol agent, played by Jolie, who's in her way to track down a criminal that happens to be her ex-lover.
There have been some vicissitudes of role. Charlize Theron and Sam Worthington were the leading actress and actor in the first place for "The Tourist". Jolie and Depp's names then came up to fill the vacancies of Theron's and Worthington's role.

"The Tourist" is likely to see the collaboration of two Hollywood stars, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. After reports of the "Changeling" star being set to replace Charlize Theron for the female lead role broke out earlier, Variety came up with another casting report which said that the three-time Academy Award-nominated actor is in talks to join her.
Should the deal work out, the 46-year-old will take on the role of an American tourist who is being used by Jolie's Interpol agent character to locate a criminal who was her ex-lover. Depp's potential role once belonged to Sam Worthington before the "Avatar" star exited the project due to creative differences.

After seeing actors Tom Cruise and Avatar's Sam Worthington depart from the developing thriller The Tourist, and then get a second wind when Angelina Jolie got interested in starring in the picture, now the film gets another major boost from an A-lister: Johnny Depp, Mr. Pirates of the Caribbean himself, is now thinking about taking the lead male role in the film.
Depp's interest in the movie comes through one of the movie's producers, Graham King. The actor has worked with King on The Rum Diary and Rango, two films now in post-production. And while having Johnny sniffing around considering to take the paycheck is a good thing for the film's producers, it still needs a director. Just a couple of weeks ago things looked promising for German director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck to come on and make the film for its intended February 2010 start of shooting. Now the »

May is the operative word here because for now, Johnny Depp is just in talks to star with Angelina Jolie in "The Tourist." The film is cursed by the Hollywood gods! The remake of the 2005 French thriller "Anthony Zimmer" has gone through so many major changes.
First, Bharat Nalluri was set to direct Tom Cruise and Charlize Theron. Then, Cruise left and Sam Worthington entered.
Soon after, Nalluri left and Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck joined to helm. Then, Theron exited and Jolie entered.
Then, both Worthington and von Donnersmarck left.
Are you still with me?
We heard that Worthington and von Donnersmarck left due to creative differences.

There was talk earlier this year that it wasn't in the studios' best interest to continue to release classic films on DVD/Blu-ray as the demand for them was dwindling and the cost of restoration was climbing. The article in question even quotes Warner Home Video senior vice president George Feltenstein saying "most of the studios have pretty much said 'Screw it, we're out of here, we're not going to do this.'" Strangely enough, it just so happens Warner Home Video is the home entertainment studio releasing the very first Alfred Hitchcock film on Blu-ray, 50 years after its theatrical release with a restoration price tag I have read cost upwards of $1 million. Perhaps studios are slowing down the release of their classic films, but with Warner's recent Blu-ray release of The Wizard of Oz, the upcoming release of Gone With the Wind and this release of North by Northwest »

Two years ago, this news would have you running for the hills. John Woo and Tom Cruise, who made that hulking mass of mediocrity known as Mission: Impossible 2, are getting back together for a World War II epic called Flying Tigers.
Why would you have a recent change of heart? Well, Cruise has made smarter choices, like his Tropic Thunder cameo and the mostly solid Valkyrie and Woo, who went from one of the most promising import directors to one of the more embarrassing in a handful of years, has reportedly bounced back with his Chinese period drama Red Cliff. Another reason to be encouraged is that this film apparently has a script co-written by Christopher McQuarrie.
Coming Soon talked to Woo about the project last week, and here's his official synopsis: »

We heard that Valkyrie co-writer and producer Christopher McQuarrie was putting something together with the help of Mason Alley as a starring vehicle for Tom Cruise back in December of 2008. Now, Coming Soon reports that not only is Cruise.s involvement likely, but that Mission: Impossible II director John Woo will be the man behind the lens. In an interview with Cs Woo gave a brief description of Flying Tigers: .It's based on a true story in WWII, about a group of American volunteer fighter pilots who worked with the Chinese Air Force fighting with the Japanese and they won the war. Also, it's the story of Clair Chennault, and they did a great contribution for the Chinese, and the Chinese people love and respect them. The whole story is about a friendship between a Chinese and an American and they worked together." Lieutenant General Claire Lee Chennault was »

John Woo and Tom Cruise on the set of Mission: Impossible II
Photo: Paramount Pictures Variety has posted an article discussing New Regency's upcoming development slate in which it includes a one-line item mentioning Flying Tigers, a film scripted by Valkyrie scribe Christopher McQuarrie with Tom Cruise attached to star. On top of that it mentions the project is on "the immediate horizon." What Peter Bart's article fails to mention is Flying Tigers will be directed by John Woo, which means this is a reunion for the Mission: Impossible II star and director.
As a matter of fact, it is actually John Woo's attachment that became the big news back in July of 2009 when Slash Film reported on a Chinese press conference in which Woo announced the film would be his next: This is an extremely important production. Currently, basic preparations for shooting work have already been made »

John Woo's new World War II film Flying Tigers has been in the works for some time now. The fighter squadron story emerged last December when it was part of a trio of projects that Tom Cruise was circling. Since then John Woo announced that he was making the Christopher McQuarrie and Mason Alley scripted picture his next project, but there's been no further updates. Now that all changes in a packed story from Variety about New Regency's upcoming projects, we almost missed the brief mention that Tom Cruise is attached to Flying Tigers, marking his grand return to the cockpit for the first time since 1986's Top Gun. ComingSoon also caught up with Woo recently and here's what he had to say about Flying Tigers: "It's based on a true story in WWII, about a group of American volunteer fighter pilots who worked with the Chinese Air »

A brief mention of John Woo's upcoming project Flying Tigers in a Variety story about New Regency's future productions mentions that actor Tom Cruise is attached to star in the project written by Christopher McQuarrie, the co-writer of Cruise's previous film Valkyrie ), with Mason Alley. An earlier story about the project mentioned the screenplay was being written for Cruise, but that the actor wasn't attached, though that status may have changed in the past 11 months. Some might remember Cruise hired Woo to direct the 2000 sequel Mission: Impossible II , which grossed $550 million worldwide, so it would make sense that Woo and McQuarrie's involvement might be enough to convince Cruise to headline the WWII drama. ComingSoon.net spoke exclusively with Mr. Woo last week... »

While it was rumored last week, IGN has now confirmed that Angelina Jolie will be replacing Charlize Theron and Variety now says that Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck is tipped to direct Spyglass thriller “The Tourist” which is set to start production in February 2010.
“The Tourist” will be the first movie for von Donnersmarck since the German director’s 2006 breakout The Lives of Others, which won the Academy Award for foreign-language film.
A remake of 2005 French thriller “Anthony Zimmer“, the story follows an American tourist (Sam Worthington) finds his life in danger when a female Interpol agent (Angelina Jolie) uses him as a dupe to flush out an elusive criminal with whom she once had an affair.
Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2) wrote the screenplay.
“The Tourist” is scheduled for release in 2011.

Last week we reported on the possibility of Angelina Jolie replacing Charlize Theron in the upcoming thriller, The Tourist. Along with that news, we also learned that the previously attached director, Bharat Nalluri, had stepped away from the project, leaving the producers actively seeking a new director. And today we get the news that a new director has been found in the form of German helmer Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others).
Variety reports that although Donnersmarck has yet to officially enter into negotiations for The Tourist with Spyglass Entertainment, the talks are expected to happen very soon. Jolie was contacted by the studio a couple of weeks ago about starring in the project in place of Theron, but her involvement was said to be contingent on finding the right director. After meeting with a number of different directors, von Donnersmarck seems to have emerged as the right man for the job, »
