Movie Review - 'Blindness'

3 October 2008 12:01 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Blindness

Starring Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, and Gael Garcia Bernal

Directed by Fernando Meirelles

Rated R

It's a tough position to be in, wanting something to be better than it is. I don't have kids, but if I did, I imagine I'd have to pretend to like a lot of school plays and soccer games. Chicago Cubs fans have had to pretend for 100 years that they actually believe this is the year, despite evidence to the contrary (again).

With Blindness, I wanted badly to appreciate it more than it deserves. I just can't.

In 2002, I discovered a little movie called City of God. I shared it with everyone I could. At the time, it was not yet nominated for four Oscars and had no reputation as being one of the best films of the decade. That came later. But I sold it hard and professed the talents of its director,

2008 MVFF31—Michael Hawley’s Quick Takes

30 September 2008 10:49 AM, PDT | From TwitchFilm.net | See recent Twitch news

The 31st Mill Valley Film Festival ("Mvff") is set to begin this Thursday, and since posting my first program overview, we’ve seen two new films added to the line-up.  The first is Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire—arguably the film with the biggest buzz from this year’s Telluride and Toronto festivals—and the other is Rian Johnson’s follow-up to Brick, the Mark Ruffalo, Adrien Brody and Rachel Weisz-starring The Brothers Bloom.

What follows are (mostly) quick takes of nine Mvff films I’ve had the chance to preview in recent weeks.  The first three were screened for press, and the remainder were seen on DVD screeners.  Wendy and Lucy and Lemon Tree are due for U.S. release and therefore restricted to 75-word hold-reviews.

Weisz 'didn't read new Mummy script'

20 September 2008 1:55 AM, PDT | From Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news

Rachel Weisz could not find the time to read the script for the new film in the Mummy franchise, she has revealed. The movie, The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor, was released this summer without the star, who played Evelyn in the first two films. Weisz remarked that with work on her movie The Brothers Bloom finishing at around the same time, it would have been difficult for her to fit the project in. "In fact, I never even read the script because it was going to be, I think, five months in China, (more)

Rian Johnson Interview, The Brothers Bloom, Toronto 2008

18 September 2008 7:36 AM, PDT | From Spout.com | See recent Spout news

Rian Johnson is the director of the innovative modern-day film noir Brick, which premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, and The Brothers Bloom is his impressive followup. While Brick is certainly set in a world of its own, with everyone in a contemporary high school speaking in 30s and 40s detective-speak, The Brothers Bloom takes place in a fantasy world chock full of steamships, fancy cars, and mysterious settings. He gets impressive performances out of Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo, Rachel Weisz reinvents herself nicely, and Japanese actress Rinko Kikuchi i ...

10 September 2008 11:30 AM, PDT | From Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news

It was another day of red carpets at the Toronto Film Festival, and this time there were a few new stars to add to the mix. Rachel McAdams was a welcome — but sadly date-free — fresh face at the premiere of Che, as was Emmanuelle Chriqui in her cute Lbd. Mark Ruffalo and Adrien Brody goofed around while Rachel Weisz looked gorgeous in her bandage dress as the trio kept on promoting The Brothers Bloom. Paris and Benji were happy to pose together there as expected to check out a screening of Paris, Not France, the documentary which features both members of the happy couple. To see more photos including Ethan Hawke, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Benicio Del Toro, just read more. The Tiff Keeps the Party Going

9 September 2008 10:30 AM, PDT | From Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news

The Toronto Film Festival soldiered on yesterday, and Matt Damon's OneXOne Gala was just one of the many events. Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale looked gorgeous in white at the premiere of Easy Virtue and a press conference for Nothing but the Truth, respectively. Mark Ruffalo looked like he was having a ball with costars Rachel Weisz and Adrien Brody at an afterparty for The Brothers Bloom. Even Paris and Benji made the trip up to Canada in the name of partying, hitting the This Monday at Ultra party with Paris's canned prosecco in hand, naturally. There are a lot more photos including Len Wiseman, Scott Speedman, and Colin Firth so just read more. Images include: Colin Firth, Jessica Biel, Ben Barnes, Paris Hilton, Benji Madden, Kate Beckinsale, Vera Farmiga, Len Wiseman, Adrien Brody, Alan Alda, Rachel Weisz, Mark Ruffalo, Sunrise Coigney, Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, Scott Speedman Source

Cinematical is excited to bring you these brand new exclusive images from The Brothers Bloom (see gallery below), which will enjoy a premiere at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival this month. The film, which marks writer-director Rian Johnson's follow-up to the much-beloved Brick, stars Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo as "the best con men in the world" who, for their one last job, decide to take a beautiful and eccentric heiress (Rachel Weisz) on a trip around the world. The delightful Rinko Kikuchi (pictured in the gallery below) also stars. We here at Cinematical are big fans of Johnson's Brick (that kinda sounds weird, huh?), and have been looking forward to The Brothers Bloom for quite some time now. While those lucky ducks currently in Toronto will get to see the film early (we'll have our review soon), the rest of us will have to wait till it hits

Exclusive New Looks at 'The Brothers Bloom'

2 September 2008 3:48 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Summit Entertainment is poising Rian Johnson's follow up to Brick for an Oscar run and considering it stars two Academy Award winners in Rachel Weisz and Adrien Brody, Academy Award nominee Rinko Kikuchi as well as Mark Ruffalo I can't say I am surprised. I recently added The Brothers Bloom as one of my Oscar hopefuls in my brand new The Contenders section and this is on top of the three new pics I added recently as it will debut at the Toronto Film Festival. However, Summit didn't think that was enough and they sent over two Exclusive photos from the flick which you can check out below or click here for the full gallery. Brothers Bloom was recently bumped from its October 24 release date and moved to a limited release on December 19 before going wide in January '09. This is an obvious award season move and I expect

'Brothers Bloom' Widely Released in 2009

1 September 2008 9:28 PM, PDT | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

One of the selected movies to be premiered at the 33rd Annual Toronto International Film Festival, crime comedy drama "The Brothers Bloom" has been scheduled earlier to get a December 19 screening time, but to the surprise of many the December release date has been listed as limited release. In further interesting tidbit, it is noted that the Rian Johnson's movie will not be released nationwide until January 16, 2009.

Unearthed firstly in Rian's Forum, the changing of the schedule has been confirmed by Johnson himself. Posting a message as his response to the posted message, he wrote, "It's true. I'm sorry I didn't post it earlier, it was all very hush hush and still being talked out, I actually didn't think they were going to release it until next week."

"There were a few reasons for the move: October and November are crowded as hell, it's a tough tough market, especially

'Brothers Bloom' Release Delayed Until December

1 September 2008 4:42 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

From Cinematical via filmmaker Rian Johnson's blog: The well-tailored The Brothers Bloom - Johnson's directorial follow-up to the terrific noir film Brick - has been pushed back from an October release to a December limited debut.

The con men movie stars Rachel Weisz, Mark Ruffalo, and Adrien Brody.

"There were a few reasons for the move: October and November are crowded as hell, it's a tough tough market, especially for a smart unique film like ours, and we'd have a week or two at the most to sink or swim," admitted Johnson. "Whereas concentrating on a couple markets for awards consideration in December, then pushing the wide in the more open January slot just seemed like a better use of resources."

So look for Brothers Bloom in limited release beginning December 19th wide a wider push expected for the weekend of January 16th.

Tiff Preview: Another Peek at Those 'Duchess' Costumes

Hayley Atwell as Lady Elizabeth 'Bess' Spencer and Keira Knightley as Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire in The Duchess

Photo: Paramount Vantage I may poke a little bit of fun at Keira Knightley's expense on occassion for taking on so many period pieces, but one thing is for certain, she knows how to pick 'em. I loved Atonement and Pride and Prejudice and can't wait to see The Duchess, which hits theaters on September 26th, but will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7. The film is set in the late 18th century and is based on Georgiana Spencer, the Duchess of Devonshire, played by Keira Knightley. I have just added six new pictures from the film including the one teased above and they continue to show off the look and design of the costumes featured in the film and highly publicized on the film's official site.

Tiff adds 20 films to special presentations lineup

13 August 2008 1:51 PM, PDT | From QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news

The Toronto International Film Festival keeps bringing the pain with the announcement of 20 new films as part of it's special presentations lineup. I really wish I could hit the fest, but ahh well. The films which really interest me are John Crowley's (Boy A) Is There Anybody There? which is about " an unlikely friendship between a scruffy former magician and a little boy with a morbid streak. Ten year-old Edward has become increasingly obsessed with death and the afterlife since his parents turned their house into a retirement home. Edward's is a lonely and peculiar existence – until he meets Clarence who introduces him to wonders in the here-and-now." Hints of Harold and Maude? Next is Bruno Baretto's Last Stop 174 , about "young Sandro who lives in the slums of Rio de Janeiro where corruption and violence are the norm. Orphaned, alienated and fearing for his life, Sandro falls into a life

New Bloom poster

13 August 2008 9:28 AM, PDT | From JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news

Rian Johnson's upcoming heist comedy The Brothers Bloom looks like a smashing good time so it's good to see it getting at least a little marketing push - the trailer was released not too long ago and now we have the most recent poster and a couple of new stills. In it, Mark Ruffalo and Adrien Brody play the titular con artists who try to swindle goofy heiress Rachel Weisz out of her money, using silent demolition expert Rinko Kikuchi and a whole lotta wit and funny. All of it goes down October 24th.

First Looks at Johnson's 'Brick' Follow-Up, 'The Brothers Bloom'

12 August 2008 5:59 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Photo: Summit Entertainment I wasn't a fan of Brick even though a lot of people seemed to like the faux gangster/Godfather elements to the story. I found it... dumb, for a lack of a better word. To that effect I am also not too sure what to think of this new film from writer/director Rian Johnson called The Brothers Bloom starring Rachel Weisz, Mark Ruffalo, Adrien Brody and Rinko Kikuchi, which means two Oscar winners, an Oscar nominee and Ruffalo. Not a bad make-up for a film, but after seeing the trailer I feel like I already know what is going to happen based on one line Weisz has, "Trick to not feeling cheated is to learn how to cheat," which is followed by a quote from Brody saying, "Sometimes I feel like she knows everything." Considering this is a film in which Ruffalo and Brody play two

Opening This Week: A doc on beauty culture and an acclaimed Sundance drama

4 August 2008 7:13 AM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

By Neil Pedley

This week's offerings find twilight twenty-somethings longing for love in Los Angeles, "The Mummy" franchise heading East and a gruesome subway slasher trying very hard not to scare people clean out of the theater, at least not before the movie actually starts.

"America the Beautiful"

At 12, Gerren Taylor was a bright young model who strolled the catwalk of Fashion Week in Los Angeles. By 13, she was considered a has-been. Director Darryl Roberts traces Taylor's early entrance and exit from the runway to paint a far larger picture of the inner workings of the fashion industry, examining the class system of models and the advertisers and designers who relentlessly manufacture a feeling of negative self-image among consumers and then prey upon it to get us to dip into our wallets. Through interviews with fashion industry experts, the first-time documentarian learns that beauty isn't skin deep . it's retouched, glossed over and as a business,
