"Big Love" Season 4 marries politics and religion

30 November 2009 1:00 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

My love for Big Love was destiny.

Perhaps because of my fundie background, I am fascinated with the various brands of religion, especially those on the “fringe” — which is where the folks in Big Love live. Of course, that’s why many people, especially women, object to the series, saying that it glamorizes plural marriage and the subjugation of women. But I don’t see anything glamorous about that part of the series setting. If anything, Big Love shows just how twisted an absolute patriarchy can be.

Big Love’s last season was, Imo, the best yet. We’re seeing Karma (a decidedly non-Mormon concept) in full force, with Bill’s tendency to justify every careless action as “God’s will” coming back to bite him in his too-often-bare butt. And this season promises more conflict as Bill decides to run for state senator, intending to out his family and »

"Glee" is shining in the nomination list released by Satellite Awards for its 14th year. The new musical by Fox makes the entry in every TV category possible through the show itself as well as the actors. Can Season 4 Finally Give Big Love Its Big Moment?

27 November 2009 8:00 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Big Love was originally positioned to be HBO's next great drama, and though it certainly hit that high bar of quality in its second and third seasons, it hasn't quite gotten its due. Part of the problem was the epic, WGA strike-induced break that wrecked the momentum between those two seasons (Season Two premiered in 2007, but Season 3 didn't come on until this past January), while somewhere along the way, the sexier, messier True Blood usurped it in buzz. Still, it did manage an Emmy nomination for Best Drama this last fall, and the imminent Season Four might finally offer Big Love a shot at the big time. (At the very least, can it score one of its actresses an Emmy nom? Chloe Sevigny is ridiculously overdue). The arty Season Four trailer, after the jump: »

My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done

24 November 2009 1:26 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

What happens when two of cinema’s greatest (and oddest) filmmakers collaborate on a project? The answer is: My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done. A new feature film directed by Werner Herzog and produced by David Lynch.

Starring Willem Dafoe, Michael Shannon, Chloe Sevigny and Brad Dourif, the film is centred around the strange (what else?), true life tale of a disturbed man obsessed with a Sophocles play, who murders his mother with a sword.

Werner Herzog, since his award-winning documentary Grizzly Man, has undergone a career renaissance. Along with Rescue Dawn, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans and his documentary features, he doesn’t seem to stop! As a filmmaker, he’s often displayed a penchant for the eccentric and weird. David Lynch, on the other hand, is downright weird through-and-through. Things have been quiet for Lynch since Inland Empire – an infuriating and brilliant film measure-for-measure. »

Senors Gilbert, Hemmings and Infante

1836 W.S. Gilbert of 'Gilbert & Sullivan' legend. If you've never seen Mike Leigh's exceptional biopic of this creative giant, Topsy-Turvy, drop everything right now and do so.

1908 Imogene Coca beloved comic actress, mostly known for TV roles

1917 Pedro Infante Mexico's biggest movie star ever. Here he is singing. Pedro Almodóvar fans will recognize this one immediately

1939 Brenda Vaccaro, Midnight Cowgirl and she of one of the oddest Oscar nominations of all time... seriously, have you seen Once Is Not Enough? Here's StinkyLulu's look at that Oscar year.

The Prada store in La was packed on Friday night with starlets celebrating the launch of the label's new book. Jessicas Biel and Alba kept things simple in black, as did mom-to-be Camila Alves. Christina Ricci took a break from her bikini fun with her new boyfriend to get decked out in a bejeweled white number. Chloe Sevigny, meanwhile, sported a bra-bearing look to pose for photos with pal Liz Goldwyn and Big Love costar Ginnifer Goodwin. Rachel Zoe added a little color to the proceedings with her husband Rodger. The Prada party was a prelude to the even more star-studded bash at La's Museum of Contemporary Art on Saturday, and it looks like the ladies got a head start on their fashionable partying. Tons of Stars Come Out For Moca's 30th Birthday!

16 November 2009 6:00 AM, PST | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie weren't the only stars who headed out for the Moca 30th Anniversary Gala in La on Saturday night. The Jolie-Pitts skipped the red carpet, but there was more than enough star power even without the A-List couple. Kate Bosworth, Eva Mendes and Jessica Alba showed some leg in shorter dresses while Rachel Zoe and Kate Beckinsale stuck with their floor-skimming looks. The event looks like it was a huge success and they had at least one happy attendee - Rachel Zoe twittered about how much she loved the mixing of art and fashion worlds. The museum's art wasn't the only thing on display for the night - Lady Gaga performed for the crowd which also included some cute loved-up couples. Gaga played the piano and sang, wearing an outfit designed by Frank Gehry, Muccia Prada and Baz Luhrmann which were all part of an art piece. »

The Fido awards are the canine Oscars

15 November 2009 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Marley & Me leads a strong list of contenders for the film awards

Put your paws together for the third annual Fido awards, the Oscars for canine actors, which will be presented at the BFI Southbank in London on Sunday. This year has been particularly strong for performances by four-legged film stars. It would be a huge oversight if the golden labrador (actually, all eight of them), who really got under the fur of naughty dog Marley in Marley & Me didn't run off with a prize in the romcom rover category. The nomination list for comedy canine is particularly strong – the dogs in Beverley Hills Chihuahua and the CGI film Bolt are both serious contenders, and the ensemble in Hotel for Dogs showed canine chemistry at its best.

"It has been an incredible year, and it has been great to see dogs in central roles," says Toby Rose, the founder of the Fido awards. »

Free Flick of the Day: The Last Days of Disco

11 November 2009 4:35 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Whit Stillman hasn't made a lot of films. In fact, there are only three: Metropolitan, Barcelona, and The Last Days of Disco. All filmed in the '90s, his trio of movies morphed from upper-class teen Manhattanites, to heading out into the international working world, and finally to a look into the end of disco. Unfortunately, the last was sadly overlooked because another big disco fest hit the big screen -- 54 -- which may have been terrible, but with the likes of Mike Myers and a big-name cast, it was the flick in the spotlight.

Nestled in the shadows was The Last Days of Disco, starring Chloe Sevigny and Kate Beckinsale as two young book editors who fill their nights with dance and banter while looking for romance. Each night, as they head to the club, they come across a myriad of faces, from the Stillman pro Chris Eigeman, to the likes of Mackenzie Astin, »

Herzog and Lynch’s My Son snags theatrical release

6 November 2009 7:35 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Absurda and Industrial Entertainment have announced that their film My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done has set a debut theatrical-release date. The movie marks the first collaboration between cinematic mavericks Werner Herzog and David Lynch, who directed and executive-produced respectively.

My Son, My Son will open Friday, December 11 at New York City’s IFC Center (323 6th Avenue), with playdates in other cities to follow. Though word from early screenings is that it’s not really a horror film, it does deal with rather twisted subject matter—a man (Bug’s Michael Shannon) who murders his mother with a sword while acting out a Sophocles play—and features a genre-centric cast including Antichrist’s Willem Dafoe, Sisters’ Chloe Sevigny, Udo Kier (who discussed the movie with us here) and Brad Dourif. You can see the movie’s official website, with a trailer and more photos, here.

The Ten Spot 2/2 - Blowjobs

10 Awkward Movie Blow-Jobs I imagine all mainstream movie blow-jobs are awkward in one way or another, unless you're Chloe Sevigny. Something tells me there isn't an acting class for pretending to have a dick in your mouth while bobbing up and down in front of a flesh colored banana hammock. And what if there's an erection involved? How does everybody in the room ignore that? It makes for good cinema though, and that's what we're here to talk about - movies and blow-jobs. Party Favors: Dan Aykroyd Is On A Mission From Vodka

31 October 2009 11:06 PM, PDT | Quick Stop | See recent Quick Stop news »

Joliet, Il - Dan Aykroyd is on a mission from vodka. The Blues Brother is cruising around the country in a Damnation Alley Rv promoting his Crystal Skull premium vodka. He rolled into my town and I was compelled to see the man.

He was appearing at a liquor store on a Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. What sort of crowd could he draw? I showed up at 1 p.m. with my four month old designated driver. There was already 400 people in line. Another 300 people end up behind us. Luckily Dan’s traveling partner announced that even though Dan was schedule to leave at 4:30, he’d be signing his bottles until the last person went home happy.

Why not? Each bottle cost $50. I’ve been told that there’s only two types of vodka in the world: Good vodka and vodka that makes you go blind and piss blood. »

John, Jason and Judd Are Stars and Studs in the Night

27 October 2009 2:29 PM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

John Mayer proved to be the main attraction at last night's Stars benefit gala in La. He cracked a few jokes from the podium, before whipping out his guitar to perform some of his new music that you guys are loving. He was rolling solo for the evening, despite the recent rumors about his romancing Rashida Jones that her publicist denied and of course the ongoing Jennifer Aniston reports. Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann were the evening's honorees, and funny guys like Jason Segel and Seth Rogen came out to toast the duo. There doesn't seem to be much news about Jason's apparent romance with Chloe Sevigny, but his How I Met Your Mother costar Josh Radnor is about to see some on-screen developments with special guest star Rachel Bilson.
