Forty years ago today, the 1960s came to an unholy end. As evening approached on Dec. 6, 1969, the Rolling Stones, who were then just reaching the height of their street-fighting Satanic majesty, took the stage at Altamont, a hastily organized, all-day-long free rock concert held on the outskirts of San Francisco -- an event planned, in essence, to be a kind of Woodstock west. Infamously, though, this was no happy-mud orgy of peace, love, and good vibes. The very fact that the concert was held next to a gritty speedway was a sure sign that no one there was really planning »

Ronnie Wood has reportedly told his Russian girlfriend Ekaterina Ivanova to move out following an alleged altercation earlier this week. The Rolling Stones guitarist was arrested on suspicion of assault on Wednesday night and spent the evening in custody before being released on bail the following morning. According to The Sun, Ivanova, 20, is doing everything she can to convince Wood to let her stay, having texted a friend saying: "Ronnie wants me out and I don't know what to do." "I think she realises Ronnie is serious. He's had enough of the whole thing. They are both fiery but (more) »

The Rolling Stones guitarist was arrested on suspicion of assault on Wednesday night (02.12.09) and allegedly dragged 20-year-old Russian cocktail waitress Ekaterina Ivanova by her neck during a drunken row in the street which spanned 30 minutes. A police source said: “Ekaterina was very distressed and had cuts on her knees from where it seemed she had been dragged along the street. But she was insistent she didn’t want police involved. Despite her refusal, witnesses allege this was a potentially assault and he may face charges. We’re looking at allegations that at one point he had her by the scruff of her neck and her collar was so tight she seemed to be choking.” At one stage, the angry 62-year-old rocker had the young beauty pinned to the ground. Carly Simon is one of the great singer-songwriters in a class that includes Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Van Morrison, Carole King, and of course, James Taylor. Some of the songs that have kept her a cultural icon include "That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be," "Anticipation," "Coming Around Again," and her monster hit, "You're So Vain," that includes a to-this-day, uncredited vocal assist by Mick Jagger, plus a mystery surrounding the identity of its conceited protagonist. In this interview, Carly talks candidly about her new "unplugged" album Never Been Gone, recent projects, her family, an Elton John non-adventure, Boston rats, a bad review, holiday plans, children's albums, crazy time signatures, her creative process, and so much more... photo credits: Amanda Borland Mike Ragogna: You know, if I'd lived with your album for just another week, I would have absorbed it more... »

Retro daredevils dust off rock ’n’ roll roots Souped-up rockabilly duo Heavy Trash deftly restores and reinvigorates the primitive era of rock and blues on its third LP, offering tinny, gritty and gnarled throwback production that pays tribute to the golden days of greasers. The band is revved by a mixture of Jon Spencer’s raw vocal ravings and Matt Verta-Ray’s fervid guitar peals. Frenzies like “Gee, I Really Love You” and “Bumble Bee” illustrate Spencer’s droll disposition and sound like a collaboration between Buddy Holly and Mick Jagger. Spencer channels more rhythm than melody in his deliveries, the pinnacle being... »

Chicago – If the 1969 U.S. tour of The Rolling Stones had gone smoothly, David Maysles, Albert Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin’s “Gimme Shelter” would still be one of the best music documentaries ever made. Of course, as everyone who knows anything about music or pop culture history knows, the tour did not go smoothly, ending in the infamous concert at Altamont Speedway that’s often pointed to as the end of the era of love.
The Criterion Collection, continuing a pattern of releasing their music documentaries on Blu-Ray before other selections, brings this riveting document of the end of an era through a band in its prime to the world of HD.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
“Gimme Shelter” opens with a photo shoot and one of the best live performances of “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” ever put on film (and probably ever recorded). Clearly, this is a band at the top of the rock ‘n’ roll game. »

On to another month of This Week in Blu-ray, we charge into a magical December filled with Terminators, Basterds, gangsters and teenage wizards. And that's just what I have to deal with before I ever sit down to watch any Blu-rays. It seems odd that this week, the first in the month of Christmas, is such a light week. Sure, there are two summer blockbusters hitting Blu-ray, but they're the lame ducks of the group. That said, I did find one or two little gems in this week's lineup. None of them involve Terminators or Ben Stiller battles though, sadly. You can thank me for saving you the money later. Read on below and be enlightened. And remember to support Fsr by buying via our Amazon links below. We need to keep the lights (and Dr. Cole Abaius' creepy "laboratory") up and running here at the HQ... I have yet to see Martin Scorsese's Rolling Stones concert doc Shine a Light despite owning the Blu-ray. I simply have no real interest in seeing it. So, when I received Criterion's Blu-ray edition of their 2000 release Gimme Shelter there wasn't any rush to give it a watch, but regardless of musical tastes this is more of a documentary than it is a musical concert event.
This is a moment captured in time as the Rolling Stones (along with the likes of Santana, Jefferson Airplane and Crosby, Stills and Nash) set out to put on a free concert in San Francisco when the decision to incorporate the Hells Angels as part of concert security over approximately 300,000 people at San Francisco's Altamont Speedway results in mass hysteria. Four births and four deaths are contributed to the evening, and one of the attacks is caught on camera as a knife-weilding Hells »

Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby, will host music stars including Bon Jovi and Kenny Chesney during a three-day festival that officials hope can boost the track's income. Officials said Monday that the festival will feature more than 65 bands playing everything from classic rock to country to bluegrass. Officials with Churchill Downs Inc., the race track's parent company, says the festival is called "HullabaLOU" and is set for July 23-25. Five stages will be set up throughout the sprawling 147-acre facility. If it's successful, it could become an annual event. The Rolling Stones and other huge rock 'n'... »

Fantastic Mr. Fox Directed by: Wes Anderson Written by: Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach (screenplay), Roald Dahl (book) Starring: George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Eric Anderson, Michael Gambon, Willem Dafoe At the beginning of the decade, Wes Anderson was being praised as one of the most unique and talented emerging filmmakers in America. The Royal Tenenbaums was seen by many as his ultimate masterpiece, earning his only Academy Award nomination to date. However, since then, he has arguably become a victim of his own success. Surrounded by copycats and increasingly cynical audiences, he has struggled to break from the mold that he created for himself. Although I enjoyed both The Life Aquatic and The Darjeeling Limited a great deal, I can't deny that Wes Anderson's style was starting to feel more like a predictable checklist and less like the mark of an auteur. He was stuck in a rut, »

The 1970 track beat Guns N’ Roses classic ‘Sweet Child O’Mine’ – which topped the poll five years ago – to the top spot in the poll by website MusicRadar.com, with ‘Whole Lotta Love’ by Led Zeppelin coming third. Just two songs from the past decade made the list; Muse’s 2001 hit ‘Plug In Baby’ at 11 and The White Stripes’ ‘Seven Nation Army’, which was released in 2003, at 15. MusicRadar.com's editor-in-chief Mike Goldsmith said: “Nearly 40 years after his untimely death, Jimi Hendrix is still the undisputed heavyweight champion of rock guitar. “Of the current generation of six-string stars, only Jack White of The White Stripes and Muse frontman Matt Bellamy feature in the higher echelons of our list. No surprise given both Bellamy and White share - or have inherited - Hendrix's unique blend of experimental instincts and white-knuckle showmanship. “Above all though, our poll seems to indicate one thing - in 2009, classic rock still rules. »

According to music website eFestivals, the Devonshire trio are set to confirm they will headline the world famous music event next June, joining former tour mates U2 in topping the bill at the 40th anniversary of the festival. The website wrote: “We are confident that the information we've received is good and we fully expect to see Muse confirmed to play at some point over the coming months.” The Rolling Stones – who are said to be planning a 2010 World Tour – are heavily rumoured to be the third act headlining the festival. Organiser Michael Eavis had reportedly been in talks with U2 for months about taking one of the three headlining slots. A source said: "Eavis has been asking them for a while now and really stepped up the effort this year. This could be an iconic moment. The fact U2 have never played Glastonbury in their 32-year career only adds to the mystique. »

The rock veterans – whose last tour finished in 2007 and earned them more than £300 million – are planning a mammoth run of shows next year, according to Ronnie Wood's cocktail waitress girlfriend Ekaterina Ivanova. The 20-year-old Russian waitress – who has been dating 62-year-old Ronnie since he walked out on his 23-year marriage to Jo Wood in July 2009 - has been a little indiscreet in letting the world know about their plans. A source told Britain’s The Sun newspaper: "She's not supposed to talk about it, things haven't been finalised but she couldn't resist telling a few friends." Ronnie recently admitted he had been in touch with his Rolling Stones bandmates Sir Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts and insisted everything was “great” between them, despite rumours he could be fired from the group because of his parting lifestyle.

Cast: George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Eric Anderson, Michael Gambon, Bill Murray
Running Time: 1 hr 27 mins
Rating: PG
Release Date: November 25, 2009
Plot: Based on the novel by Roald Dahl, and written for the screen by Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach comes the tale of Mr. Fox (Clooney). He tried to change his ways, but still wants to steal chickens and his actions get all the animals in town in trouble, even his own family.
Who’S It For? This film has the rare chance to impress the parents and entertain the kids. If you’re a Wes Anderson fan, you won’t be disappointed. I cuss you not.
Expectations: Rushmore is my favorite Anderson film, and I figured added voice work by Clooney and Streep couldn’t possibly be a negative. Yeah, I was excited.

With a cast of talking stop-motion animated wild animals that are imbued with the herky-jerky charm of old Rankin-Bass Christmas specials ("Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"), it may seem like modern-day iconoclast filmmaker Wes Anderson has turned a corner into gentler, family-friendly waters. And in a sense, he has - but make no mistake, "The Fantastic Mr. Fox" is a Wes Anderson film through and through, complete with the pre-requisite father-issues, family angst, and nihilism that we've come to expect from his decade of quirky R-rated fare such as "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" (albeit, in smaller doses). It even has such Anderson signature settings as mundane schoolrooms and science labs, as well as occasional detailed charts and graphics, not to mention a penchant for tan corduroy clothing, and any number of other accoutrements and flourishes held over from bygone eras of the not-so-distant past.
