Predictions 2010 Sundance Film Festival: Babluani, Fabrega and Jarecki

30 November 2009 1:32 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

The Sundance selection committee headed by 1st term Festival Director John Cooper are probably butting heads, making and breaking dreams as I publish this. Official selections are less than 2 weeks away, so I figure, as I do every year, that I'll have some fun predicting what'll be watching/covering 2 months from now. If the tradition of nurturing the new generation of filmmakers and bringing back old family members from previous editions continues, most of my predictions (at least half of the 45 I'll name) should materialize. - The Sundance selection committee headed by 1st term Festival Director John Cooper are probably butting heads, making and breaking dreams as I publish this. Viff 2009: 'Empire State Building Murders'

3 October 2009 11:39 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Based almost entirely on found footage — and a clever script to thread that footage together — Empire State Building Murders is a loving tribute to classic Hollywood films.

French director William Karel, who co-wrote the script with Jerome Charyn, has crafted a film in which they've pulled footage from classic films and edited them together to tell a completely original story.

It's a mashup, a remix of some of the best gangster and noir films from the '30s, '40s and '50s. "Starring" Kirk Douglas, Lauren Bacall and James Cagney as the main players in a love triangle set in post-Second World War New York, when the movies of the time would have us believe the Mob was in complete control.

Douglas is the face of Jim Kowalski, a former New York cop who receives a letter addressed to him but postmarked Aug. 17, 1949, some 60 years earlier, that has been »

Paris, je t'aime

1 September 2009 10:32 AM, PDT | Anh Khoi Do and Movies | See recent Anh Khoi Do and Movies news »

Once in a while, one has to try something new when it comes to films. Unlike Toronto Stories, which is another anthology movie I'd recommend, Paris, je t'aime uses a rather different approach while showing as much audacity as its Canadian counterpart. All in all, the film is a rather enjoyable gem.

First of all, to put it shortly, Paris, je t'aime uses 18 short segments directed by internationally acclaimed directors. Of course, each segment takes place in a different district of Paris. In each segment, the directors, through their own vision, offer their own interpretation of the meaning of love in none other than the most romantic city in the world.

Obviously, the first praise that you'd like to offer for this film is certainly its photography. Without looking like a postal card, Paris, je t'aime has no difficulty to capture the city's beauty in order to fit it into »

DVD Playhouse—August 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—Director’S Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

DVD: Review: The Strange One

23 June 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Calling 1957’s The Strange One homoerotic is an understatement. Part of its homoeroticism is attributable to its setting in a Southern military college; any gathering place for young, virile men with hyperactive libidos and no socially acceptable outlet for their raging hormones is going to be rife with same-sex flirting and charged glances. Strange ups the ante by making its villain (Ben Gazzara) a sadist who derives entirely too much pleasure from watching his fellow cadets get spanked or viciously beaten. The cast, largely culled from the talent pool of the legendary Actors Studio, uses body language and smoldering ... »

Out on DVD: A vintage gay oddity, TV teens, showtunes and talking back at the screen

17 June 2009 5:48 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

An eccentric and rarely-seen gay classic makes its DVD debut this week, alongside another season of South of Nowhere, a show-tune fave and a series of movies for people who get shushed in theaters.

Read on for more!

The 1957 film version of The Strange One turns up on DVD with several censored scenes — which suggested homosexuality — restored, but it's still a fascinatingly odd duck. Cassavetes favorite Ben Gazzara makes a riveting screen debut as, I kid you not, Jocko de Paris, an oily manipulator at an all-boys' military academy. George Peppard and Pat Hingle co-star in the film, which was written by Calder Willingham, based on his novel End as a Man. Vito Russo extensively discussed the chopped-up Strange One in The Celluloid Closet; one can only wonder what he'd make of this director's cut.

Also new to DVD is Chess in Concert, featuring the vocal talents of Josh Groban »

DVD Playhouse—June 2009

By

Allen Gardner

The International (Sony) An Interpol agent (Clive Owen) joins forces with a Manhattan D.A. (Naomi Watts) to bring down an arms dealing ring and a corrupt global banking cartel that’s funding them. Superlative thriller was oddly ignored by critics and audiences alike, but expertly blends intelligence (courtesy screenwriter Eric Warren Singer’s masterfully-crafted script) and full-throttle action (director Tom Tykwer stages one of the great film shoot-outs in New York’s iconic Guggenheim Museum), making this dynamite thriller reminiscent of the best work from masters such as John Frankenheimer and Robert Aldrich. Armin Mueller-Stahl is wonderful as a world-weary covert op. Bonuses: Extended scene; Featurettes; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

The Jack Lemmon Film Collection(Sony) Five films from the two-time Oscar winning actor, focusing on his early career: Phfft! is a zippy comedy from 1954, one of Lemmon’s earliest films, in which »

[DVD Review] Voyage of the Damned

22 April 2009 9:12 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Throughout Voyage of the Damned, I was reminded of Stanley Kubrick’s famous criticism of Schindler’s List: “The Holocaust is about six million people who get killed. Schindler's List was about six hundred people who don't.” In contrast to that film, Damned concludes its action in 1939, well before several of the major concentration camps opened their gates and the “final solution” went into effect. In short, this represents the exact same sort of narrow perspective on the Holocaust that List does, but at least acknowledges it in a way that List (or, more accurately, its supporters) perhaps does not. But as a result, the film lacks the grounding or insight that would elevate it beyond a mere historical account, because in its current form, it is severely lacking in the category of raison d’etre.

Voyage of the Damned was produced at the point when Hollywood was just initially »

Jeff Dowd: The Hollywood Interview

(Indie film producer, producer's rep, and Big Lebowski inspiration Jeff Dowd, above.)

Ten Years After Lebowski, The Real Dude Still Abides

by Jon Zelazny

Editor’s note: This article originally appeared on EightMillionStories.com on September 26, 2008.

September 9th saw the release of a new 10th Anniversary Special Edition DVD of the Coen brothers’ cult favorite The Big Lebowski, their “Raymond Chandler on acid” saga of two middle-aged L.A. slackers (Jeff Bridges & John Goodman) who get caught up in a Byzantine kidnapping plot.

It used to be a little show biz secret that Jeff Bridges’ amiable character, Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski, was based on the Coens’ real-life friend and colleague, indie film producer and producer’s rep Jeff Dowd, but that began to change in 2002 when four Lebowski fanatics in Louisville, Kentucky promoted the first annual Lebowski Fest, an event so successful, they’re now staging three a year in various cities. »
