'30 Rock' star Alec Baldwin to venture into politics?

30 November 2009 8:00 PM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Actor Alec Baldwin tells Men's Journal he no longer cares to act. "I don't have any interest in acting anymore," Baldwin says in the December issue of Men's Journal. Baldwin adds, "I'm not young, but I have time to do something else." The actor was a scene stealer as Shelly in the 2003 film "The Cooler," and Ellerby in "The Departed," where his intense characters dominated every frame. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in "The Cooler." In 1988, Baldwin shot on the scene for me in several films; Tim Burton's "Beetle Juice" and then "Married to the Mob" as Frank the Cucumber, his evil, sexy mobster in the quirky Jonathan Demme film »

Revenge of the shlockmeister: Roger Corman gets his due

25 November 2009 4:57 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Roger Corman's output through the years may not be immediately familiar, but he's been a wide conduit for emerging talent and raw creativity. That's why he's finally been given an Oscar

"Ok, so, November 14th 2009, Roger Corman receives an Oscar. People … what took you so long?" The words of Jonathan Demme in his speech before handing over the statuette to Corman on that fateful evening.

Don't worry, you've not missed the Oscar ceremony (something surprisingly easy to do since Sky swiped the TV rights). This was the inaugural Governors awards, part of the new-look Academy that will see the number of nominees greatly expanded come March, where the board issue honorary Oscars to deserving talents who they missed out or ignored over the years. It's a shame this was such a sidelined event as we were denied the opportunity to see Hollywood's brightest and best politely clapping at a »

Screen Queens: Hollywood Does AIDS

21 November 2009 6:49 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Hi everyone, MattCanada here with another weekly dose of gay cinema. This week we're looking at Philadelphia, the Oscar winning courtroom drama, essentially the defining Hollywood response to the AIDS epidemic.

I first saw this film as a kid. I must have been about seven when I watched it with my parents and it was definitely my, and probably many other people's, introduction to AIDS. For me it continues to shape how I think about the virus, the stigma, and the epidemic. Longtime Companion opened a few years earlier but this was the first mainstream prestige film to deal with AIDS and homophobia. Having two big stars in Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington must have seemed like a big step for Hollywood. All of this is well and good, but rewatching the film for the first time in over a decade, I had serious problems with its filmic construction and especially its politics. »

See Roger Corman Receive His Honorary Oscar

18 November 2009 4:35 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

As Foy reported back in September, Roger Corman was selected to receive an Honorary Oscar by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Sadly, he won't be a big part of the Oscar telecast in March of 2010; instead, the awards ceremony was held this past Saturday at the Governor's Ball.

Brief clips of Corman's acceptance will no doubt be broadcast during the live telecast, but that's hardly enough considering the man's legacy. Luckily, there is video from the event courtesy of Oscars.org, which we have for you below.

First up, Ron Howard toasts Roger Corman.

Roger Corman Accepts Oscar

17 November 2009 12:38 PM, PST | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

It's been a long time coming, but Roger Corman has finally received his Oscar. At the annual Governors Awards ceremony, honoring the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award recipients, Corman was, fittingly, handed his trophy by former protege Jonathan Demme, who directed Corman in his cameo appearance in The Silence of the Lambs, for which Demme received an Oscar for directing. Hit the jump to watch a video of the ceremony. The video can be watched here on Oscars.org. It's worth noting that, at 83, Corman still hasn't gone legit, as last month saw the grand old B-King unveil his latest piece of exploitation -- the online web series Splatter. Check out our recent video... »

Jonathan Demme to Turn Dave Eggers Katrina Book Into Cartoon

17 November 2009 9:54 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Dave Eggers has been on top of the film world lately. His first original script (Away We Go), which he wrote with his wife Vendela Vida, was filmed and directed by none other than Academy Award Winning director Sam Mendes. Last month, his adaptation of the popular children's story Where the Wild Things Are received considerable praise for its unconventional nature. Now his latest piece of nonfiction Zeitoun, an account of one man's extraordinary experience during and following Hurricane Katrina, has been picked up for adaptation. This news was reported late last month but seems to have been overlooked by many news sites. According to the NY Times, Jonathan Demme (director of Silence of the Lambs and more recently Rachel Getting Married) has purchased the rights to Eggers' book and plans to adapt it into a cartoon. It seems that Demme was inspired by the book's cover art (drawn by »

The Governors Awards: On the scene at Oscar's special honors

15 November 2009 5:20 PM, PST | EW - Hollywood Insider.com | See recent EW.com - Hollywood Insider news »

It was the first big experiment of a quite experimental Oscar season, and by all accounts, it was a resounding success. Last night, for the first time in Academy Award history, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences handed out their honorary awards at a separate event from their annual Academy Award ceremony. At a three-hour gala dinner in the ballroom above the Kodak Theatre, B-movie king Roger Corman (pictured, left), groundbreaking cinematographer Gordon Willis (right), and legendary screen siren Lauren Bacall (center) received honorary Oscars, and producer and studio chief John Calley was recognized with the rarely bestowed Irving G. »

Lauren Bacall Wins an Oscar

15 November 2009 1:24 PM, PST | newser.com | See recent newser news »

A mere 65 years after her unforgettable screen debut, Lauren Bacall has won an Academy Award. The honorary Oscar was a high point of a ceremony last night in Los Angeles that also celebrated the careers of filmmaker Roger Corman, cinematographer Gordon Willis, and producer John Calley. "I can't believe it, a man at last!" the 85-year-old Bacall joked as she hoisted her new hardware. Woody Allen called Willis "the best cinematographer we have ever seen." And Jonathan Demme spoke for many—not just fans of his mentor Corman—when he asked, "People, what took you so long?" The festivities... »

Roger Corman: Scorsese, Stallone, Sayles, and other A-listers talk about the B-movie king

He gave life to teenage cavemen and candy-stripe nurses. Crab monsters and humanoids from the deep. T-bird gangs and towns that dreaded sundown. His name is Roger Corman. And on Nov. 14, he will receive an honor that no one would have predicted: an honorary Academy Award. The 83-year-old B-movie titan has made nearly 400 films as a director and producer. From the start, Corman was a magnet for hungry young actors, writers, and directors who would work for slave wages for the chance to make their first film. They called it the "University of Corman," and the alumni include Francis Ford Coppola, »

Roger Corman to Receive Honorary Oscar

13 November 2009 10:58 AM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Great news for fans of low budget auteur Roger Corman! (among which I count myself)

According to Studio Briefing, the legendary producer/director/mentor to a number of important directors will receive an honorary Oscar at next year's Academy Awards.  The article suggests, interesting and accurately, that none of his 400 movies would ever be considered for an Oscar (even if you do like Humanoids From The Deep, it's not along the lines of The English Patient or Gandhi).  So this is a huge deal for genre fans.  I think they're more likely honoring him for his legacy, which includes proteges such as Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, James Cameron and Jonathan Demme, all of whom have won Oscars.

I'll argue that Roger Corman has had an important influence on the film industry, even if his catalogue has not.  It's nice to see a legend get honored, even if his legend is one of notoriety, »

“B” Movie Titan Roger Corman To Receive Honorary Oscar

12 November 2009 1:44 PM, PST | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

Eighty-three-year-old Roger Corman, who has produced nearly 400 "B" movies -- none of them regarded as a candidate for an Oscar nomination -- over a career that began 55 years ago, will himself receive an honorary Oscar at next year's ceremonies, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Wednesday. Corman later told the Associated Press that even he was "truly surprised" by the announcement. "I felt the academy would not give an award to someone who made low-budget films," he said. Unlike the major studios, Corman has used his own money to finance his exploitation films, generally investing in unknown talent who later achieved star status, including Frances Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Jonathan Demme, James Cameron, John Sayles, and Peter Bogdanovich. "I know that they all would have achieved the same level if they had never met me," Corman told the wire service, "but I think what I was able to do was to give them a start and help them a little bit in their careers, and I take great pride in that." »

October 30: DVD alternatives to this weekend’s multiplex offerings

We know how it is: You’d like to go to the movies this weekend, but you’re still working on putting together your Michael Jackson costume for Halloween; sewing all those sequins onto that glove is taking forever. But you can have a multiplex-like experience at home with a collection of the right DVDs. And when someone asks you on Monday, “Hey, did you see This Is It this weekend?” you can reply, “No, I eased on, eased on down the road instead.” Instead Of: Michael Jackson’s This Is It, the pseudo concert film/documentary/slash public memorial service that salvages what is basically home video footage of rehearsal’s for what would have been Jackson’s final tour into something not quite fit for public consumption... Watch: 1978’s The Wiz, and see the then-teenaged Jackson as the Scarecrow; though the film was a critical and box office flop when it was released, »
