The Name Game: Biblical Boys

27 November 2009 11:00 AM, PST | People - CelebrityBabies | See recent People - CelebrityBabies news »

For baby name purists the search for the perfect moniker often begins and ends with the Bible. Featuring countless names that have endured for thousands of years, it is the epitome of traditional — offering time-honored appeal to both celebrities and non-celebrities alike.

Nameberry.com co-founder Linda Rosenkrantz notes that biblical names claim the top five spots on the Most Popular list for boys. What’s more, she points out, “there’s been an Old Testament name at #1 for the past 55 years, when New Testament classics like John and James started to lose their lead.”

Vera Farmiga Interview, Up In the Air

26 November 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

MoviesOnline sat down recently with Vera Farmiga to talk about her new movie,“Up in the Air,” about the timely odyssey of Ryan Bingham (Oscar winner George Clooney), a corporate downsizer and consummate modern business traveler who, after years of staying happily airborne, suddenly finds himself ready to make a real connection. When he falls for a simpatico fellow traveler (Farmiga), Ryan’s boss (Jason Bateman), inspired by a young, upstart efficiency expert (Anna Kendrick), threatens to permanently call him in from the road. Faced with the prospect, at once terrifying and exhilarating, of being grounded, Ryan begins to contemplate what it might actually mean to have a home.

For the vital role of Alex, whose elite travel program savvy seduces Ryan but who also triggers a desire for real sharing, director Jason Reitman turned to award-winning actress Vera Farmiga, best known for her role in Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed. »

10 closest Oscar races in the past 20 years

23 November 2009 1:12 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

One of the shrewdest Oscarologists on the planet is Tariq Khan of Fox News, who often generously shares his views of current and past derbies with Gold Derby readers. Here he takes a nostalgic look  at the past two decades, offering his take on the most competitive derbies. Words below are Tariq's. Thanks, m'friend!

We’ve often discussed those Oscar races that seem just too close to call . . . where it’s clear (or at least seems clear) that the eventual winner will nab the Oscar with only a few more votes than his or her nearest competitor. While we can never really know for sure (unless we get one of those top jobs at the accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers,) we do have some idea of what may have been the closest races in Oscar history. Allow me to present what I believe were the 10 closest acting races over the course of the past 20 years. »

Exclusive Interview: Catching Up with Kristanna Loken

15 November 2009 11:10 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

At its core, acting is really just a grand lie told in the name of entertainment. It’s a bit incongruous, then, that when actors walk off the stage, we expect the opposite from them: the truth. We want to know who they are and what they stand for — and Kristanna Loken is one of the few actors who tells us.

Loken, who publicly came out as bisexual four years ago, has appeared in T3: Rise of the Machines, Painkiller Jane and The L Word. She also starred in Lime Salted Love, an independent film that became available on DVD last month.

In this exclusive interview with AfterEllen.com, Loken opens up for the first time about her separation from husband Noah Danby and about the new love in her life.

4 November 2009 12:10 PM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

We've all been eagerly anticipating this flick, and while we've hounded the production folks to give us a copy of the promo trailer, we haven't seen anything yet. However, we do know that the film has been renamed The Last City. And to boot, we've got some extended info:

Synopsis:

Year: 2070

The ancient prophecies of hell on earth came true with a vengeance at the end of the Age of Pisces when apocalyptic solar flares brought the modern world to its knees. With the ozone layer decimated, the sun penetrated land and sea. It got hot. Very hot. The rivers dried, the oceans turned to salt, and the Earth was showered with relentless fire. In the aftermath, a chain reaction of chaos engulfed the planet and mankind devoured everything. All that remained was The Last City, formerly the pinnacle of the modern world, now reduced to an urban graveyard of sand, »

Casting Notes: Farmiga and Caan go to Buffalo; New Gigs for Anne Heche and Jessica Biel

29 October 2009 9:30 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Some decent casting notes cropped up in the trade breaks last night, and because I'm just this sort of nice guy I'm about to round up the best for you. First involves James Caan and Vera Farmiga, who've just joined Keanu Reeves in Henry's Crime. The film, you may remember, is written by Anvil! director Sacha Gervasi, and will be directed by Malcolm Venville, recently of 44-Inch Chest. Farmiga is the love interest for Reeves, who is falsely accused of robbing a bank in Buffalo. Producer Jordan Schur calls the script "a genius comic fable." Gervasi himself called it "a twisted, romantic comedy, very dark and funny," which the trades refer to it as a romantic comedy and Capraesque. So who knows what the hell we'll see out of this one. [Variety] After the break, Anne Heche gets love and Jessica Biel gets laid. Anne Heche, meanwhile, will show up in »

29 October 2009 7:02 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Vera Farmiga may be well on her way to an Oscar nomination this fall, with her role opposite George Clooney in Up in the Air gaining the kind of accolades she's deserved countless times before in her career. And she's already cashing in for more roles. Farmiga has signed on to star opposite James Caan and Keanu Reeves in Henry's Crime, a romantic comedy about a man (Reeves) falsely accused of robbing a bank in Buffalo. According to Variety, Anvil! The Story Of Anvil director Sacha Gervasi wrote the screenplay, and Malcolm Venville will direct. I know what you're thinking about Reeves' wooden acting, and how if he were robbing your bank he probably wouldn't be able to convince you he meant it, and yeah, that's fair. But every now and then he's pretty good in something, and with Farmiga opposite him, maybe he'll be encouraged to step up his »

Farmiga & Caan Choose Life Of Crime

29 October 2009 12:33 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Vera Farmiga and James Caan have signed on to join Keanu Reeves in Henry's Crime, a new romantic comedy based on a script by Sacha Anvil! Gervasi. 44 Inch Chest director Malcolm Neville will take a break from directing Ray Winstone to use really rather naughty language to direct*.The story's largely under wraps for the moment, but we do know that Reeves will play a "big-hearted" man called Henry who is falsely accused of robbing a bank in Buffalo. Farmiga's his love interest - we're going to go ahead and guess she's his lawyer. There's no word on Caan's role yet though. And it's probably too much to hope that Henry's Cat will also turn up. Production begins in New York state later in the year, so expect to see this late in 2010. Huh, wonder if we can get Anvil on the soundtrack?*At least, we're assuming this film won't feature quite so much swearing. »
