50 Cent only signed up for 'Dead Man Running' because of Brenda Blethyn.
The 'Crimewave' rapper said he was assured of the quality of the film when he found out the 63-year-old 'Atonement' actress would be cast alongside him in the British gangster film.
He said: "I only go for films which have a certain level of artistic integrity and I knew I would be safe in Brenda's company."
Brenda, meanwhile, has said she has enjoyed the boost to her "street cred".
She added: "My street cred has rocketed since I have been in a film with 50 cent."
The rapper - real name Curtis Jackson - also said his greatest character to date has been his aggressive rap persona, and added that people are always surprised by how polite he is in the flesh.
He added: "People say, 'wow he was so nice!' when I come around and there's normalcy. »

Everybody wishes they had a mum like Brenda Blethyn, including hard-man Tamer Hassan. As the star and executive producer of Dead Man Running, the former bit player had Blethyn top of the list to play the wheelchair-bound mother of his beleaguered ex-con. Her very life is at stake when the local mob boss (played by 50 Cent) calls in a debt. Hassan also hit up his old mate, footballer Rio Ferdinand, (more) »

Back to the London Film Festival with Dave, with an actressing overload today. Coming within the next few days, sanity pending, will be thoughts on Precious (yes, again), A Prophet and, finally, The White Ribbon.
A vague plot synopsis, like the one found in the film festival's literature, makes Chloe's icy erotica seem coyly alluring. A full plot synopsis might reveal the more tawdry aspects of the film, but what delight there is within Atom Egoyan's latest may well remain within the unfolding, so I'll keep as mum as I can manage. But something doesn't feel right from the start. You can film a cold place but it takes something more to make the film cold itself - and Chloe is too heavily photographed, too close to really appropriate that at all. There's no law that says a film set in Canadian winter has to send chills down the back of your spine, »

- Caught a public screening with the wonderful Brenda Blethyn in attendance for Rachid Bouchareb's London River. I liked the form, the insertion of television tube portions of the London attacks to help push the story over its couple of days period, and while I also thought there was some strong narrative work done in how the pair of worried parents come together, I didn't much care for the additional items where a distraught mother brings her own misconceptions of the modern world to the table. The film preemed back in February at Berlin and has yet to be picked up here. Full review coming soon.... »

London River is the newest feature from award-winning French-Algerian director Rachid "Days Of Glory" Bouchareb, starring actress Brenda Blethyn, screening @ Tiff 2009 September 17. The film previously won a 'Silver Bear' @ Berlinale 2009, awarded to Sotigui Kouyaté for best acting. "...Cities push strangers together, at times tragically, as in the London bombings of July 7, 2005. As hundreds went missing in the confusion of the aftermath, family and friends posted flyers all over the city with pictures of the loved ones they sought. Brenda Blethyn plays 'Mrs. Sommers', a farming woman with a simple rural routine. When her regular calls to her city-dwelling daughter go unanswered, she crosses the English Channel into the throng of north London. At first, news of the terror attacks are mere background noise to her, but as she continues to search for her daughter, fear sets in. At the same time, 'Ousmane' (Sotigui Kouyaté) an African farm worker has travelled »

Since the EMMYs have 2,741 categories, we only focus on two things: first, how our favorite shows did and second, which big screen stars other than La Pfeiffer (she's always there with her television kingpin husband) will show up. Which of them got nominated for their small screen sojourns whether longform or more movie-like?
Speaking of which...
Drew Barrymore on the set of Going the Distance
Yes, you, Drew. But you knew she knew (everyone knew) that her affecting work in Grey Gardens as "Little Edie" was going to make the grade. "Big Edie" Jessica Lange also won a nomination for the narrative feature based on -- but also sort of jumping off from and commenting on -- the famous beloved documentary of the same name. I hope to have an interview with their director here soon.
Before we get to the rest of the big screen folks, here's the nominees »

British actress Brenda Blethyn opened a new library in her hometown - then paid a fine for a book she borrowed 50 years ago.
The Oscar-nominated star officially launched the new building in Ramsgate, Kent before revealing she had failed to return a book from the old library in 1959.
And she vowed to make amends by paying back the overdue fine to library owners Kent County Council.
Blethyn says, "I used to come to the old library as a child. It is wonderful to see the library open with such style and all this space for chatting, which you couldn’t do in my day.
"I was worried about a library book which was overdue and my dad said: ‘here’s three pence, go take it back.’ On the bus I got a bit peckish so I spent the money on a (biscuit) Wagon Wheel instead. Based on a penny fine a week I have a cheque for the library for £26." »

Tilda Swinton and her esteemed jury have picked their winners for the Berlinale Festival. The Golden Bear (the top prize) went to The Milk of Sorrow. The movie is being called a "triumphant ode to life" but it sounds gruesome. The title refers to a disease carried in the breast milk of women who were raped.
The photo to the left shows Tilda kissing the hand of the lead actress. That Tilda, she's such a gentleman. Love her! (That's an order from The Film Experience. Not that you needed the shove). If you follow Oscar's foreign film race each year you may recall that the director Claudia Llosa's previous film madeinusa was Peru's submission in 2006. Llosa now seems likely to receive that particular patriotic honor again next fall when Oscar's foreign film official submission list is released. "Boy, something smells good out there."
A River Runs Through It (1992)
Brad Pitt always did have a great nose. Not only is it beautiful in form but it's fully functional! He's running a little late for an important family meal that seems to consist of huge slices of ham and grits (are those grits?). There's also muffins just out of the oven, pancakes, orange juice, milk and coffee. There's enough food for several families but his mom is Brenda Blethyn and she never exactly undercooks, does she? Food or performances.
