'The Princess And The Frog,' 'Me And Orson Welles' And 'The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee' In This Week's unLimited

24 November 2009 11:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It's another big holiday weekend with plenty of new releases to consider following your Thanksgiving feast this Thursday (and following your subsequent leftovers feasts through Sunday). In the same way that many Americans prefer alternatives to the traditional turkey and stuffing dinner on the day of gratitude, many moviegoers want something other than a studio tentpole release the day after Thanksgiving. Really, why would you want a popcorn movie when you're still full from the night before?

There are a couple of limited release options this week, including an important studio film getting a surprisingly soft opening, to appease such a film diet. Check these films out if you want something different as or additional to your main course this weekend:

"Me and Orson Welles"

What is is: Richard Linklater, director of "Dazed and Confused" and "School of Rock," returns with a fictionalized coming-of-age drama set during production of Orson Welles »

Just few days before the film is released in limited U.S. theaters on Thanksgiving weekend, November 27, Screen Media Films has provided another sneak peek at "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee". Making its way out via Zap2it, the footage features Blake Lively as young Pippa Lee, who is calmly speaking to her mother Maria Bello's Suky Sarkissian, when she becomes emotional.

When she is a teenager, Pippa runs away from her rural home and seeks refuge with her father's sister Trish in New York City since she is nearly driven mad by her complacent pastor father Des Sarkissian and bipolar mother Suky. Falling under the influence of Kit, her aunt's lesbian partner, Pippa rapidly descends into an underworld of illegal drugs and promiscuous sex. She is rescued from her decadent lifestyle by Herb Lee, a charismatic publisher who is 30 years her senior.

Exclusive Video: Robin Wright Penn and Blake Lively Discuss The Private Lives of Pippa Lee

23 November 2009 12:47 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Robin Wright is best known for playing two highly iconic roles on the big screen. The first, was where she gained her fame as the title role in Rob Reiner's The Princess Bride, the second is where she earned her Oscar nomination as Jenny in Forrest Gump. Blake Lively is best known for her break-through roles on both the hit series Gossip Girl and in the movies The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and it's sequel. So it only makes sense that the two actresses would share the title role, playing the same character at different points of her life in the new film The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, opening in theaters on November 27th. We recently had a chance to sit down with both Robin Wright and Blake Lively to discuss their new film, how they went about playing the same character, working with director Rebecca Miller »

Celebrating cinematic folk, born on this day 11/23. Get out your kazoos.

Franco, Maxwell and Harpo. Half of the fun of building these posts

is these completely nonsensical groupings!

1859 Billy the Kid, outlaw. I've always thought it a mystery as to exactly why people routinely idolize characters whom they would never want to meet in real life. Murderers, criminals, thieves, (especially gangsters)... they all get the silver screen pedestal treatment. Billy has been portrayed dozens of times and Val Kilmer, Emilio Estevez, Kris Kristofferson, Buster Crabbe and Paul Newman have all done the job.

1888 Harpo Marx I'm embarrassed to say this but I can never remember which Marx Bros is which. When I watch 30s comedies, I almost always select a screwball romance.

1892 Erté artist over whom wee Nathaniel obsessed, wanting a whole animated movie to spring forth from his theatrical illustrations of ladies in elaborate headdresses and fab gowns.

Robin Wright Penn Interview, Private Lives of Pippa Lee

22 November 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

Golden Globe nominee Robin Wright heads an all-star cast in “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee” that includes Academy Award winner Alan Arkin, Blake Lively, Maria Bello, Suky Sarkissian, Keanu Reeves, Chris Nadeau, Monica Bellucci, Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore and Golden Award nominee Winona Ryder.

Adapted from writer-director Rebecca Miller’s novel of the same name, the film follows the adventures of Pippa Lee, a serene, beautiful, devoted wife and mother with a seemingly perfect life -- until her surprisingly volatile past crashes through her persona, forcing her to find her true sense of self.

Robin plays the character of Pippa Lee who on the page, in both Rebecca Miller’s novel and screenplay, presents a singularly unusual heroine who begins to question the seemingly fulfilling life she’s made for herself by entering into a dialogue with the demons of her past. As the trappings of her marital and familial life slowly unhinge, »

Blake Lively Not Comfortable Doing Bed Scene in 'The Private Lives of Pippa Lee'

15 November 2009 8:04 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Billed to portray young Pippa Lee in "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee", Blake Lively has filmed romantic scenes with her co-star Alan Arkin, who plays her love interest. In an interview with Collider, the depicter of Serena van der Woodsen in TV series "Gossip Girl" has shared about her experience shooting a bed scene in the movie.

"Well, I think it's uncomfortable, laying in strategically placed clothes that are taped on your body, in front of some strangers. That's always uncomfortable," Lively admitted. She then added, "But, I was with Alan and Rebecca [Miller], and our wonderful D.P., and it was a very private set. We're all actors, we're all professionals and we all understood what was happening. Everybody is uncomfortable with those scenes. You're never going to be comfortable being half-naked in front of anyone. But, it was fine. It was a short scene."

Our pals over at Fanboyz.net scored some great scans. Jeff tells me they are from the Preview Movie Guide that was given out at Cinemark movie theaters featuring some cool new looks at Disney’s new The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. The film stars Nic Cage, Jay Baruchel, Alfred Molina, Teresa Palmer and is directed by Jon Turltetaub.

Based on the poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and later the animated short in Fantasia, Sorcerer’s Apprentice tells the story of a young wizard in training, who causes problems for his master when a spell on a broomstick goes awry. However this re-imagining plans to feature a modern day story with some dark, adventurous elements to it.

The new story centers on an average college student (Baruchel) who is reluctantly recruited to work for a sorcerer named Balthazar Blake (Cage). The man gives him a crash course in the art »

Fanboyz have scored a scan of the first three official photos from Disney's live-action film The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Loosely adapted from the classic story from Fantasia, and based in modern-day Manhattan, Nicolas Cage plays Balthazar Blake, a sorcerer who recruits and trains a young protege (Jay Baruchel) to help fight the forces of darkness. Celebrity illusionist Drake Stone (Toby Kebbell) joins forces with an evil sorcerer named Horvath (Alfred Molina), to "gain ultimate powers." The film, also features Teresa Palmer (Bedtime Stories) as Baruchel's love interest and Monica Bellucci (Passion of the Christ, The Matrix Reloaded) as Veronica, a sorceress and the long-lost love of Cage's character. The Sorcerer's Apprentice is set to hit »

Free Movies: Bram Stoker’s Dracula is on Hulu

28 October 2009 12:37 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Free is the best way to see some movies. Take the Coppola-directed Bram Stoker's Dracula. The film was a disappointment on many levels -- it is miscast, skewed quite far from the book (contrary to the title) and oddly stagebound. And yet it has a few bright shining ideas and performances, and some killer production design. Thanks to Hulu you can now watch the entire film for free. This version of Dracula was released in 1992 after no small amount of hype within the geek community. (A short comic book adaptation beautifully drawn by Mike Mignola heralded its arrival, for example. Mignola also contributed production design and storyboards to the project.) The film boasted a few seemingly incredible casting choices (Gary Oldman as Dracula, Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing, Tom Waits as Renfield and an early look at Monica Bellucci as one of Dracula's brides) and quite a few head-scratchers. »

No details yet on the roles reserved for the newbies.Bolkovac risked her own safety and lost her job (she sued) when she learned of and reported what Variety coyly describes as "a scandal" (it was a sex trafficking ring) within the company, which was contracted to hire and train police officers. Several Dyncorp employees were forced to resign, but were immune from prosecution in Bosnia. The Canadian-German co-production has been »

Monica Bellucci, David Strathairn, and Vanessa Redgrave Join Rachel Weisz in The Whistleblower

Variety reports that Monica Bellucci, David Strathairn, and Vanessa Redgrave will join Rachel Weisz in the indie political drama, “The Whistleblower”.  Based on a true story, “The Whistleblower” is the directorial debut of Larysa Kondracki’s and tells the story of policewoman (Weisz) who risks her job and her own safety to uncover and bring to light a scandal involving both American contractors and the United Nations in postwar Bosnia.   You wouldn’t think a scandal could erupt at the intersection of “American contractors”, “United Nations”, and “postwar Bosnia” but I guess we’ll just have to suspend our disbelief.

Weisz is having a great 2009 so far.  She gave one of the best female performances of the year in “The Brothers Bloom” and she played the lead in Alejandro Amenábar’s “Agora” which became Spain’s top-grossing film of the year after only four days.  Weisz will next be seen »
