First Official Photos From Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

10 November 2009 8:48 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Fanboyz have scored a scan of the first three official photos from Disney's live-action film The Sorcerer's Apprentice. I'm guessing that the photos appeared in the same AMC catalog that the Alice in Wonderland photos were scanned from over the weekend. Click on over to Fanboyz to see the uncropped images in larger resolution. Loosely adapted from the classic story from Fantasia, and based in modern-day Manhattan, Nicolas Cage plays Balthazar Blake, a sorcerer who recruits and trains a young protege (Jay Baruchel) to help fight the forces of darkness. Celebrity illusionist Drake Stone (Toby Kebbell) joins forces with an evil sorcerer named Horvath (Alfred Molina), to "gain ultimate powers." The film, also features Teresa Palmer (Bedtime Stories) as Baruchel's love interest and Monica Bellucci (Passion of the Christ, The Matrix Reloaded) as Veronica, a sorceress and the long-lost love of Cage's character. The Sorcerer's Apprentice is set to hit »

Free Movies: Bram Stoker’s Dracula is on Hulu

28 October 2009 12:37 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Free is the best way to see some movies. Take the Coppola-directed Bram Stoker's Dracula. The film was a disappointment on many levels -- it is miscast, skewed quite far from the book (contrary to the title) and oddly stagebound. And yet it has a few bright shining ideas and performances, and some killer production design. Thanks to Hulu you can now watch the entire film for free. This version of Dracula was released in 1992 after no small amount of hype within the geek community. (A short comic book adaptation beautifully drawn by Mike Mignola heralded its arrival, for example. Mignola also contributed production design and storyboards to the project.) The film boasted a few seemingly incredible casting choices (Gary Oldman as Dracula, Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing, Tom Waits as Renfield and an early look at Monica Bellucci as one of Dracula's brides) and quite a few head-scratchers. »

We've known for a few months that Rachel Weisz was attached to play the lead in the indie political drama The Whistleblower, but Variety now reports that Vanessa Redgrave, Monica Bellucci and David Strathairn have joined the cast.Based on a true story, it's the directorial debut (at least at feature-length) of Larysa Kondracki, and sees Weisz as Kathryn Bolkovac, a Un International Police Force monitor hired by the Us company DynCorp in Bosnia on a Un related contract. No details yet on the roles reserved for the newbies.Bolkovac risked her own safety and lost her job (she sued) when she learned of and reported what Variety coyly describes as "a scandal" (it was a sex trafficking ring) within the company, which was contracted to hire and train police officers. Several Dyncorp employees were forced to resign, but were immune from prosecution in Bosnia. The Canadian-German co-production has been »

Monica Bellucci, David Strathairn, and Vanessa Redgrave Join Rachel Weisz in The Whistleblower

20 October 2009 8:00 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Variety reports that Monica Bellucci, David Strathairn, and Vanessa Redgrave will join Rachel Weisz in the indie political drama, “The Whistleblower”.  Based on a true story, “The Whistleblower” is the directorial debut of Larysa Kondracki’s and tells the story of policewoman (Weisz) who risks her job and her own safety to uncover and bring to light a scandal involving both American contractors and the United Nations in postwar Bosnia.   You wouldn’t think a scandal could erupt at the intersection of “American contractors”, “United Nations”, and “postwar Bosnia” but I guess we’ll just have to suspend our disbelief.

Weisz is having a great 2009 so far.  She gave one of the best female performances of the year in “The Brothers Bloom” and she played the lead in Alejandro Amenábar’s “Agora” which became Spain’s top-grossing film of the year after only four days.  Weisz will next be seen »

Mr. October: Dani Filth

3 October 2009 1:30 PM, PDT | Pretty/Scary | See recent pretty-scary news »

Either you’re a Cradle of Filth fan, or you’re not, but even if you don’t listen to the music of the amazing metal band fronted by Dani Filth (sort of a cross between a musician, an evil warlock, and a British person), you won’t be able to deny Dani’s filthy charm. The dark enforcer of heavy metal and all things darkness has a surprisingly funny side to go along with his incontrovertible sex appeal. In 2003 he voiced the "Dominator" in the feature-length animated film of the same name and starred in the horror film Cradle of Fear. You can hear his collaborative work with Claudio Simonetti and the band Daemonia on the soundtrack of the Argento horror film The Mother of Tears. Now Dani’s latest creation, The Gospel of Filth, is causing us to get our panties in a tizzy. This collection of essays on the occult, »

Free Polanski? Yes, Free!

2 October 2009 9:32 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Earlier today, I received an email from Fearnet's mailing list with "Free Polanski... Movie" as the subject. It is, obviously, a reference to the Free Polanski petition currently making rounds in the film community; but Fearnet isn't promoting that. They just want to sensationally let people know that they have Roman Polanski's great 1965 horror film Repulsion up for free viewing on their website.

Hey, just because it's 44 years ago doesn't mean we should all just forget!

You can watch the full film over there.

On a more serious note, at this point I'm rather ambivalent about Polanski's fate. I'm not going to cry for the man if they throw him in jail. Don't kick a monkey if you can't take a poop in the face, right? Serves him right, or something like that. But I'm not going to pitch a hissy if they let him go, either. I'd feel bad for the victim, »

Roman Polanski: Hollywood Steps Up, as France Steps Back (Video)

30 September 2009 6:49 PM, PDT | TheImproper.com | See recent TheImproper.com news »

Hollywood is finally stepping up to support for Director Roman Polanski, who is fighting extradition to the United States to face sentencing for having sex with an 13-year-old girl more than 30 years ago. But his home country, France and Poland are stepping back. In Hollywood, Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen have taken the lead on Polanski’s behalf. Among other actors and directors David Lynch, Wim Wenders, Pedro Almodovar, Tilda Swinton, Peter Fonda, Whoopi Goldberg and Monica Bellucci are urging his release. But Singer-songwriter Jewel and ABC’s “The View” co-host Sherri Shepherd condemned Polanski for his actions. »

Avary Gets Year In Jail, Celebs Want Polanski Set Free and I Weep for Society

30 September 2009 1:48 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Roman Polanski's jailing has certainly inspired people to write some of the most insane ramblings I have read in some time. Take for example, Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere writing the following in his comment section on this post: I didn't say that Polanski deserves a pass from his self-created troubles because he's a great artist, or "Art God." I said and believe that Art Gods have earned the right to be shown an extra measure of consideration when such matters arise. That doesn't mean "give them a pass" -- it means show a little compassion. Basically -- if I'm understanding this correctly -- having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old is not as bad if you directed Chinatown than, say, if you were just an average person. Hopefully you can figure out for yourself how ridiculous I believe such a statement to be, and this goes for everyone, not just Polanski. »

Roman Polanski Update, His Latest Film in Limbo

29 September 2009 2:04 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Following his arrest in Switzerland on Saturday, Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski has filed an appeal against his extradition to the United States while he remains in a Swiss jail for the “next few weeks,” officials said.

If L.A. prosecutors have their way, Polanski will be transported back to California for sentencing on a 31-year-old charge of “unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor” and his subsequent flee from the country.  (For more details on the 1978 plea bargain, click here.)

In the past few days the Hollywood elite have come to his defense by signing a petition for his immediate release.  The 138 names of film industry types include Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Tilda Swinton, Monica Bellucci, David Lynch, Jonathan Demme, John Landis, and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.  The petition reads, “It seems inadmissible to them that an international cultural event, paying homage to one of the greatest contemporary filmmakers, is used by the police to apprehend him. »

Polanski Lawyers Seek His Release

29 September 2009 12:58 PM, PDT | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

Lawyers for Roman Polanski have filed a motion with the Swiss Criminal Court asking that he be released. Early today (Tuesday), the court said that it will issue a decision within the next few weeks. Herve Temime, Polanski's attorney, also said that the director plans to fight extradition to the U.S., a country that he fled 31 years ago after pleading guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl. Meanwhile, Los Angeles Times columnist Patrick Goldstein observed Monday that Polanski's arrest comes at a time when federal authorities are demanding that California release 40,000 inmates because of prison overcrowding. "You'd hope that L.A. County prosecutors had better things to do than cause an international furor by hounding a film director for a 32-year-old sex crime, especially one that Polanski's victim wants to put behind her." That furor continues to grow. As of early today more than 100 entertainment industry professionals from Europe, Asia and the U.S. had signed a petition asking that Polanski be released. Among the signers are the directors Pedro Almodóvar, Wong Kar Wai, Wim Wenders, Michael Mann, Woody Allen, David Lynch, Stephen Frears, Costa Gavras, Monica Bellucci and Martin Scorsese. In a letter to the editor of Britain's Independent newspaper, Harvey Weinstein said that he plans to help circulate the petition. Moreover, he said, "I'm not too shy to go and talk to the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and to ask him once and for all to look at this." »

Roman Polanski's wife has asked a host of film stars to join her fight to prevent the director being extradited to America.
