Jim Carrey as Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol
Photo: Walt Disney Pictures One thing's for certain with Robert Zemeckis's latest attempt at motion-capture CGI animation, kids need not apply. I have had conversations with fellow critics and the conclusion I've come to concerning children and Disney's A Christmas Carol is that while some elements may indeed frighten some kids, the overall complaint will be that it's just too boring.
If you've seen any incarnation of Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol" the best way to describe this latest attempt is to call it a stripped down non-inventive take on the classic Christmas story that wears on too long and is just plain dull. By the time I hit the Ghost of Christmases Yet To Come I was ready to check out, I knew what was coming and wasn't expecting any deviation. I won't say I was ever bored beyond reproach, »

The players: Director: Robert Zemeckis, Writer: Robert Zemeckis, Cast: Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Bob Hoskins, Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn
Facts of interest: Based on the story by Charles Dickens, obviously.
The plot: The classic tale is back on the big screen, and Scrooge is still hating Christmas, until three spirits pay him an important visit...
Our thoughts: Charles Dickens’ beloved holiday story “A Christmas Carol” gets the 3D treatment, and the result is a visually stunning big-screen experience I’m sure many cinemagoers out there will enjoy to the fullest extent. As far as I’m concerned, my feelings about this one are mixed. »

Our friends over at First Showing got an interesting little scoop this afternoon, picking up some casting news from Robert Redford's upcoming Lincoln assassination film The Conspirator. A friend of Fs' Alex Billington ran into RocknRolla star Toby Kebbell, who said that he was in town to work on The Conspirator and that he's playing John Wilkes Booth. For those who missed 6th grade history, Booth was the man that pulled the trigger on President Abraham Lincoln in Box 7 at Ford's Theatre on April 14, 1865. If this turns out to be true (all signs point to yes, as it's first hand), Kebbell completes a cast that includes James McAvoy, Robin Wright Penn, Frederick Aiken, Justin Long, Evan Rachel Wood, Alexis Bledel, Kevin Kline, and Tom Wilkinson. The film will follow the story of Mary Surratt (Wright Penn), the lone female charged as a co-conspirator in the assassination. "As the whole nation turns against her, she »

Last night, a friend of mine at a Hollywood party ran into Toby Kebbell, the very talented British actor who some of you may remember seeing in RocknRolla as Johnny Quid or in Control as Rob Gretton. His career has taken off recently, as Disney has given him two key roles in two of their big movies - Prince of Persia and The Sorcerer's Apprentice. My friend said that Kebbell told him that he is getting ready to shoot Robert Redford's The Conspirator, in which he plays the role of John Wilkes Booth. The film already has an impressive cast lead by James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn, but Kebbell wasn't listed anywhere. This not a rumor, it is confirmed casting. I trust my friend and know for certain that Kebbell was there talking with him (as I was at the same party). I'm surprised that his involvement hasn't »

Sean Penn’s teenage son was reportedly arrested last week. 16-year-old Hopper, the Irish-American actor’s son with estranged wife Robin Wright Penn, was allegedly taken into custody by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department after officers visited his high school in Malibu. Because he is a minor, authorities have not released details as to why he was arrested or if any charges have been made, but Radar Online reports the teenager was busted for drug possession. The news of Hopper’s reported arrest comes weeks after Hopper’s mother filed for divorce from Penn, citing "irreconcilable differences". In April, the Oscar winner filed for separation from his wife, but a month later asked California's Marin County Superior Court to dismiss the case claiming it was an "arrogant mistake.” It was not the first time the couple had announced they were divorcing only to change their minds. Penn, 49, first »

Jim Carrey wouldn't want to travel through time.
The Hollywood funnyman - who was in London's Leicester Square last night (04.11.09) for the world premiere of his latest film Disney's 'A Christmas Carol', based on the Charles Dickens story - has revealed he wouldn't want to revisit his past or see into the future even if he had the chance.
He said: "There are some important physicists who now are telling us that all time is happening only once. So I think now is a good time."
The 47-year-old actor - who was sporting a very full and bushy beard - was joined on the red carpet with his movie co-stars Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins and a host of celebrity guests as the British city was turned into festive spectacle with Christmas trees and fake snow.
He told Bang Showbiz: "This is overwhelming - even for my ego. This is amazing. »

My favorite film adaptation of Charles Dickens. .A Christmas Carol. is the 1951 version starring Alastair Sim. Directed by Brian Desmond Hurst and adapted by Noel Langley, the movie captured the dark yet whimsical tone of Dickens. classic.
.Disney.s A Christmas Carol,. the new animated film from writer-director Robert Zemeckis, tried to reinvigorate one of the greatest Christmas stories ever told. Though Zemeckis failed to find the right balance between the dark and the whimsical, I still applaud the movie for being faithful to Dickens. work.
The film is very faithful indeed, that some of the images may terrify little children. Let.s face it, Dickens. 1843 novella was intended for adults. So Walt Disney Pictures is in a quandary. They are marketing an animated film to children that will ultimately scare them.
We all know the story by now. An old, bitter miser, Ebenezer Scrooge (voiced by Jim Carrey), finds »
