Review: Nip/Tuck - Alexis Stone II

(S06E07) "That's why we need to play dirty." - Sean

Gotta give credit where credit is due -- despite the fact that Teddy's story was so poorly wrapped up, Ryan Murphy and Co. crafted a helluva one-two punch to make us forget about it. At first, I was a little disappointed with the return of Erica last week, but it turned into what's arguably been the best arc of the season. If this ends up being the last time we see Vanessa Redgrave on Nip/Tuck, at least she went out with a bang.

'Greenberg' and 'Letters to Juliet' Trailers

24 November 2009 12:23 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The following trailer for Greenberg, a new comedy starring Ben Stiller and directed by Noah Baumbach, debuted on Apple just yesterday, but I'm not getting around to writing about it until today. It's making quite the impression around the Internet as it tells the story of Roger Greenberg (Stiller), a man at a crossroads in his life who ends up housesitting at his brother's home in Los Angeles. There, he strikes up an unlikely friendship with his brother's assistant Florence (Greta Gerwig), an aspiring singer. Florence and Greenberg's encounters lead to an uncertain and wonderfully vulnerable courtship.

Check out the trailer directly below or at Apple in high definition. Focus will release Greenberg on March 12, 2010.

Next is a trailer for a film I added to the database only a few minutes ago, Letters to Juliet, a new romance from Summit starring Amanda Seyfried as a young American who travels »

Pic sees theatres on May 7th next year and is produced by Caroline Kaplan, Ellen Barkin and Mark Canton. When a young American (Amanda Seyfried) travels to the city of Verona, home of the star-crossed lover Juliet Capulet of Romeo and Juliet fame, she joins a group of volunteers who respond to letters to Juliet seeking advice about love. After answering one letter dated from 1957, she inspires its author (Vanessa Redgrave) to travel to Italy in search of her long-lost love, which sets off a chain of events that will bring a love into both their lives unlike anything they have ever imagined... »

Weisz Picks Up Richardson Theatre Award

24 November 2009 12:16 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Rachel Weisz has become the first actress to win an acting award named after the late Natasha Richardson at a prizegiving recognising the best in London theatre.

The Mummy star received the Natasha Richardson Best Actress trophy for her part in West End play A Streetcar Named Desire at a ceremony hosted by the London Evening Standard newspaper on Monday.

The coveted prize has been renamed to honour Liam Neeson's wife, who died following a tragic skiing accident in Montreal, Canada in March.

Richardson's mother, veteran performer Vanessa Redgrave, was on hand to present the trophy to Weisz.

Accepting the award, Weisz said, "It is even more of an honour because this is the first year that the award has been named after the great and much, much-loved Natasha Richardson."

Sir Ian McKellen was also given a special award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to British theatre throughout his 50-year career. »

10 closest Oscar races in the past 20 years

23 November 2009 1:12 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

One of the shrewdest Oscarologists on the planet is Tariq Khan of Fox News, who often generously shares his views of current and past derbies with Gold Derby readers. Here he takes a nostalgic look  at the past two decades, offering his take on the most competitive derbies. Words below are Tariq's. Thanks, m'friend!

We’ve often discussed those Oscar races that seem just too close to call . . . where it’s clear (or at least seems clear) that the eventual winner will nab the Oscar with only a few more votes than his or her nearest competitor. While we can never really know for sure (unless we get one of those top jobs at the accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers,) we do have some idea of what may have been the closest races in Oscar history. Allow me to present what I believe were the 10 closest acting races over the course of the past 20 years. »

Uncanny Birthday Suits

Celebrating cinematic folk, born on this day 11/23. Get out your kazoos.

Franco, Maxwell and Harpo. Half of the fun of building these posts

is these completely nonsensical groupings!

1859 Billy the Kid, outlaw. I've always thought it a mystery as to exactly why people routinely idolize characters whom they would never want to meet in real life. Murderers, criminals, thieves, (especially gangsters)... they all get the silver screen pedestal treatment. Billy has been portrayed dozens of times and Val Kilmer, Emilio Estevez, Kris Kristofferson, Buster Crabbe and Paul Newman have all done the job.

1888 Harpo Marx I'm embarrassed to say this but I can never remember which Marx Bros is which. When I watch 30s comedies, I almost always select a screwball romance.

1892 Erté artist over whom wee Nathaniel obsessed, wanting a whole animated movie to spring forth from his theatrical illustrations of ladies in elaborate headdresses and fab gowns.

Review: Nip/Tuck - Alexis Stone

(S06E06) "That's the wonderful thing about raising children -- they keep you young!" - Erica

With Teddy's murder now come and gone (I could go on for hours about how displeased I still am with the way her story ended), Nip/Tuck returned to safe territory last night in "Alexis Stone" by bringing back one of the most loved (and hated) characters to ever grace the show -- Julia's mother, Dr. Erica Noughton (played to icy perfection by Vanessa Redgrave). With Erica around, conflict is always guaranteed and this was no exception. Calling her the mother (and mother-in-law) from hell would be the understatement of the year.

Remembering Tennessee Williams

9 November 2009 9:36 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Playwright John Patrick Shanley, referring to Tennessee Williams as a "gorgeous unstoppable beast," recounted an incident in a restaurant when he, a budding writer, maybe thirty feet away from the master dramatist, could not bring himself to say hello. Such is the power of "influence" that any person in theater would stand in awe of this writer of poetry, short stories and the extraordinary body of plays for which he is best known. Shanley was among two dozen speakers who paid tribute to Tennessee Williams at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine on Thursday evening, themselves a Who's Who of American theater: Vanessa Redgrave who had originated the role of "Lady" in "Orpheus Descending" read from "Not About Nightingales," Marian Seldes who created the role of Blackie in "Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore," Sylvia Miles performed her role,... »

Gerard Butler Cast in Ralph Fiennes' Shakespeare Film Coriolanus

4 November 2009 10:30 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Way back in February it was announced that actor Ralph Fiennes would make his debut as a director on a contemporary adaptation of William Shakespeare's play Coriolanus. THR announces, from the on-going American Film Market this week, that Gerard Butler has been cast in the lead role opposite Fiennes, who will also be acting as well as directing. Butler will play Tullus Aufidius, commander of the Volscian army. He joins a cast that includes William Hurt, Eddie Marsan, Jessica Chastain and Vanessa Redgrave. The script was written by John Logan (Gladiator, The Last Samurai). Shooting starts in March next year in Serbia. Coriolanus is a play that's not often taught in schools and most people probably haven't read. It's set in the early years of the Roman Republic, however it sounds like Fiennes has contemporized it instead. The story follows Roman military leader Caius Martius, who returns home from »

Gerard Butler Joins Coriolanus

Ah, Coriolanus. That Shakespeare play about...Romans, isn't it? Something to do with wars and elections? But fear not if your lack of knowledge rivals ours, because Ralph Fiennes is directing a film version, and Gerard Butler has just joined the cast. The one that the Reduced Shakespeare Company don't bother trying to summarise (except through interpretive dance involving a small clockwork dinosaur) in fact follows a Roman general called Gaius Martius (Fiennes himself) who leads his city's armies to war against the Volsicans (from Southern Italy), some of Rome's most dangerous enemies in its early days. The leader of the Volsicans is Tullus Aufidius, who Butler is set to play, who considers Gaius a blood enemy and engages him in single combat. And that's all only in the first half. The play also stars Vanessa Redgrave in the crucial role of Volumnia, who persuades her son to run for »

Gerard Butler to Star in Ralph Fiennes’ Adaptation of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus

Ralph Fiennes is making his directorial debut with “Coriolanus”, a can’t miss script from William Shakespeare (that 393-year-old dead guy is really going places). Fiennes will pull Shakespeare’s family-political tragedy (the two never seem to mix well in  Shakespeare’s plays) out of ancient Rome and into what’s being called a “contemporary version”.  Butler will play Tullus Aufidius, commander of the Volscian army from Shakespeare’s play and nemesis of Coriolanus (Fiennes).  Butler joins a cast that includes William Hurt, Eddie Marsan, Jessica Chastain, and Vanessa Redgrave.
