Duncan Jones’ Moon Wins Best Picture and Best Debut Director at the British Independent Film Awards

10 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

One of the best sci-fi films of the past several years, Duncan JonesMoon took home both Best Picture and Best Debut Director at this year’s British Independent Film Awards.  The was also received nominations for Sam Rockwell for Best Actor, Duncan for Best Director (a category which included both debut and veteran directors), Nathan Parker for Best Screenplay, and two nominations in the Best Technical Achievement category with Clint Mansell getting a nod for Original Score and Tony Noble for Production Design.

Any victory for Moon is an important victory because while it received large critical acclaim, its June release may have left it slightly adrift in the minds of critics and societies compiling their Top 10 of 2009 lists.  I’ll admit that it is disappointing that Rockwell didn’t win, but he did lose to Tom Hardy’s universally loved performance in Bronson so it wasn’t like »

Best of the Decade #20: Spider-Man 2 (2004)

2 December 2009 10:39 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Like it or not, comic book movies have sort of defined popular cinema throughout this decade. Marvel (and DC to some degree) have been pumping out multiple superhero films a year, taking advantage of the initial success of X-Men and Spider-Man, and completely dominating the summer box office. While the formula may have gotten stale and uninspired for the most part, there is the occasional comic book film that has managed to elevate the source material beyond a simple franchise cash cow, looking to secure a long line of sequels, prequels and reboots. One of those films, in my opinion, is Spider-Man 2. (Yes. A Sequel.) I'm not entirely sure what it is about this film that worked so well for me. Maybe its rewatchability has bumped it up a bit as merely the "super hero film I've watched the most", but I truly do feel that Sam Raimi's »

Oscar MythBusting: One Day They'll Be Nominated!

2 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Most fans of established actors believe that one day their favorite will be nominated for an Oscar. In 2009 campaigns hopes are particularly high for Sandra Bullock, Alfred Molina, Colin Firth and Christopher Plummer. Fans of James McAvoy and Sam Rockwell still hold out longshot hope. But guess what? The odds are, generally speaking, against them on February 2nd (two months hence!) when the lucky 20 are called.

Most actors aren't ever nominated for the big prize. People seemed surprise to read in an old Oscar Mythbusting column I wrote years ago that the majority of nominated actors (approximately 67%) never receive a second nomination. But I did the research and it's true. Even less likely than a second nomination: a first one. Consider this...

The following (living) legends have still never been nominated despite rich bodies of work and several classic films or exuberantly praised performances: Mia Farrow, Isabelle Huppert, Christopher Plummer and Donald Sutherland. »

New Poster for Prince of Persia

2 December 2009 4:05 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Another poster has been released for Disney/Bruckheimer’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The poster doesn’t really do anything for us except tell us that Jake Gyllenhaal’s character (Prince Dastan) has ‘courage’. To be honest, it looks like the cover of an Empire magazine with the font and colour they’ve used on it. They released a similar one of Gemma Arterton a while back so this ties together with that one. I’ve put them both below the text.

Prince of Persia is directed by Mike Newell and also stars Alfred Molina, Ben Kingsley and Steve Toussaint. It’s out 28th May and is very high on my list of films to see for 2010 – it’s a Jerry Bruckheimer production after all

Another New Poster For Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time

2 December 2009 1:45 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Oh yeah, that’s right, another new poster for Disney’s big screen adaptation of the popular computer game, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina. This is the latest in a series of posters, and despite the fact that they all look a little too Photoshop to me, they at least give us a better look at what will no doubt be a major family event next year.

The poster comes to us courtesy of Planeta Disney, check it out below:

From the team that brought the “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy to the big screen, Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films present “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,” an epic action-adventure set in the mystical lands of Persia. So Alec Baldwin Might Win an Oscar for Exposing Himself On Screen?

30 November 2009 10:14 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

I love The Hollywood Reporter. Beyond measure. Especially on days like this when it's a little chilly outside, the future seems bleak and unrelenting, and the lack of discussion regarding penises on screen garnering awards praise is downright staggering. Over at the respectable rag, Gregg Kilday has written a piece about how Alec Baldwin, a man who is co-hosting the Academy Awards this year, may actually be in the running for an award himself. Conflict! Intrigue! But why is the thespian in the hunt for gold? The writer is claiming that Baldwin's role in the upcoming It's Complicated might earn him an Oscar. To be fair, I haven't seen the film or the performance, but it's a bold claim nonetheless, and it's even bolder because Kilday seems to hint that part of the reason is because of little Alec. Thanks to his performance in Nancy Meyers' marital comedy "It's Complicated," Baldwin »

The Satellites Have Launched. What Are They Orbiting?

30 November 2009 6:10 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The Satellites (formerly Golden) have announced their 2009 nominations for what it's worth. And you might be screaming "not very much".

It's hard to know what to make of this Golden Globe splinter group. There is never much of a narrative thread in their nominations. You can't sense from year to year a type of film they like or whatnot. Which makes them feel a bit suspect. They also do very strange things which you're about to see if you read their nominations. They never get much attention and yet they keep plugging away. This year they were especially kind to 2012 (who knew?), Nine and The Stoning of Soraya M. But they were downright rude to the sci-fi drama Moon which received zero nominations despite their lack of aversion to sci-fi films. I mention this because the moon is a natural satellite and the Satellites are artificial. Maybe they're jealous. What they're orbiting we know not. »

Oscar Update: New Predictions after Seeing 'Up In the Air' and 'A Single Man'

25 November 2009 12:35 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

It feels good to know it will only be a matter of weeks before I will have seen all the major Oscar contenders as my prediction charts are starting to be less about buzz and the opinion of others and I can finally add my own personal opinion into each. Of course, I still have films such as Invictus, Nine and Avatar yet to see, but by the end of day on December 10 that will no longer be the case for those three.

I will also have seen Brothers, Broken Embraces and The Princess and the Frog by that time as well.

Unfortunately, Crazy Heart and The Last Station are ducking me as I haven't heard a word about either film here in Seattle, but hope to soon.

As for what I have seen, I finally saw Up In the Air just last night as well as The Young Victoria, »

An Education Movie Review

24 November 2009 7:27 PM, PST | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

An Education finds us in 1960's London, when men were men and women went to University as a backup plan to finding a husband, and 16 year-old Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is doing her best to get to Oxford. Bright and witty beyond her years, her father (Alfred Molina) is not actually having a great deal of difficulty grooming her for her college admission, though he acts rather as though he were. The majority of Jenny's life is focused on her goal in one way or another. She plays the cello, because it looks good in the "hobby" box on the form. But, the complaints, which simply must be put forward under the circumstances, are largely for looks alone. Jenny is a student in the most glorious sense, and while she loves French music and other things that harrow her parents, she loves her Latin as well, and is as set on »

Black Cat Buzz Ensnares Julia Stiles, Anne Hathaway

18 November 2009 10:55 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Julia Stiles as the Black Cat? The web's been abuzz of late with news that the actress, who most recently starred in The Bourne Ultimatum, met with a casting company about the upcoming Spider-Man 4, according to Ugo.

It should be noted, however, that just about every actress on the planet has been reported as auditioning for the part, including Rachel McAdams and Romola Garai.

Moreover, Deadline Hollywood is reporting today that Anne Hathaway has been approached to star in the fourth installment. She is purportedly wanted for a starring role, but not to replace Kirsten Dunst.

Last week, McAdams debunked the rumor she met with producers over the role of Felicia Hardy/Black Cat, occasional nemesis and love interest of Spider-Man/Peter Parker. Garai, meanwhile, admitted to being among hundreds of actresses who had attended open auditions, but said she was not going to be cast in Spider-Man 4. »
