Heather Matarazzo stars alongside Jennifer Coolidge in "Magnus!"

12 November 2009 7:10 AM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Out actress Heather Matarazzo has signed on to play one of the most interesting characters she's likely to ever play — and she's played some odd ones. Heather will be starring as "a trailer-trash gal who loves singing and gets cast in a local production of Jesus Christ Superstar" who is likened to Jessica Simpson.

The film, Magnus!, is from openly gay director Ash Christian (Fat Girls) and Best in Show actress Jennifer Coolidge will play Heather's mom.

Yes, it sounds incredibly awesome.

Shooting starts this month and PrideSource.com reports that production hopes to be wrapped in time to get Magnus! in next year's Lgbt film festivals. Sounds good to me!

In the meantime, the just-turned 27-year-old actress is keeping busy as an ambassador for the Hetrick-Martin Institute, which just held its annual Emery Awards last night. Heather attended with her fiancée, Caroline Murphy.

And, of course, there's the return »

Birthday Suits: Oscar-Snubbed

10 November 2009 5:11 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Today's birthday list doesn't make me feel celebratory so much as oscarighteously furious. Perhaps I should explain. It's only the four first birthday boys whipping me into a golden frenzy. Then things calm down.

Claude, Ann and Dick

Todays Birthdays 11/10

1889 Claude Rains, never won an Oscar. This despite being a great screen actor, whose filmography reads like a catalogue of Golden Age greatness. He's an actor who made indelible contributions to not 1, not 2 but 7 Best Picture nominees, a number that doesn't even reflect films like Notorious, Now Voyager, The Wolf Man, The Invisible Man, Mrs. Skeffington or The Greatest Story Ever Told. He didn't even get an honorary statue!

1925 Richard Burton, never won an Oscar. This despite winning exactly as many nominations as Liz Taylor won husbands.

1928 Ennio Moriccone has never won an Oscar. This despite being a world reknowned composer, being worshipped by film fanatics and revolutionizing how people scored Westerns. »

A Hamptons Bash Benefiting the Empire State Pride Agenda

14 July 2009 11:03 AM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Tea Party. Guests at the 17th annual Hamptons Tea Dance. Photographs by Steve Dimaio for Empire State Pride Agenda. There was no sign of tea sandwiches or even tea for that matter (well, maybe a nice, strong Long Island Ice Tea) at the 17th annual Hamptons Tea Dance benefiting the Empire State Pride Agenda, which works tirelessly to enhance the social welfare and equality of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered New Yorkers. Touted as “the gay event of the summer Hamptons season,” 1,400 well-dressed and mostly well-mannered members of the gay and straight communities converged on the beautiful 10A Ranch in East Hampton, home of Will Trinkle and Juan Granados. The sprawling former stables once housed Lee and Jackie Bouvier’s horses but were converted to cottages in the 60s and 70s to house Georgica homeowners wanting to rent their estates for extra income. Several years ago, Trinkle and Granados bought the property and renovated it, »

Want to know the status of a particular movie, TV show, or band? Wondering what a certain actress is up to these days? Send your entertainment-related questions to askafterellen@gmail.com — with your first name, city and country — and we'll try to answer as many as we can.

Before we dive into answering new questions, I have an update on another question I answered recently: In a previous edition of Ask AfterEllen.com, a reader asked about the upcoming film Les Passages, starring Mary-Louise Parker and Julie Delpy.

Mary-Louise Parker and Julie Delpy

In my response to the question, I indicated that the film didn't include lesbian content. Well I've never been more thrilled to be wrong.

Director Donna Vermeer recently sent me this message:

Just wanted to correct some misunderstandings in what you may have thought the storyline was. Mary-Louise Parker plays Catherine, a New York filmmaker, who falls in love with Anna, »

30 March 2009 11:30 AM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

The annual series of nationwide GLAAD media award ceremonies kicked off this weekend in NYC. Vanessa Williams and her pregnant Ugly Betty costar Ana Ortiz were two of the attendees, while Tyra Banks received the Excellence in Media Award for her efforts to increase "visibility and understanding of the gay and lesbian community." T.R. Knight and Chris Noth also came out to show their support, taking the stage and looking handsome in their suits. Los Angeles and San Francisco awards are still coming up, but the Manhattan stars looked like they were enjoying the kickoff event as they smiled and mingled the night away.
