Price of a Movie: 11.11.09

11 November 2009 2:00 AM, PST | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

This week's Price of a Movie brings you fun films and festivals, plus, a chance to actually Make some money! Meet The Filmmakers: Fantastic Mr. Fox Director Wes Anderson's new film Fantastic Mr. Fox opens in theaters this Friday! The cast is... well... fantastic (Meryl Streep and George Clooney as Mr. and Mrs. Fox, along with Jason Schwartzman, Willem DaFoe, Bill Murray and Owen Wilson among others) and we're also intrigued by the use of classic handmade stop-motion animation techniques that give the film its unique look. To add to that, apparently very little time was actually spent in a sound studio; instead, most of the voice-over work was done outdoors - in forests, attics, stables, and even underground. Want to know more? Stop by the Apple Store in Soho on Wednesday evening (tonight!) for a discussion with the filmmakers. Wes Anderson, Meryl Streep and Jason Schwartzman will be there, »

Review: ‘Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day’

10 November 2009 12:15 PM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Not many people know this, but the first Boondock Saints film barely even happened. After a one week run in five theaters, the film was released on DVD… and embraced by a massive cult following. A sequel was always promised and showed up on IMDb years before production had even begun, but after a while, fans started to doubt that we’d ever even see another installment. Now, ten years later, Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day happened, and thank the Lord it did.

All Saints Day picks up eight years after the McManus Brothers and their vigilante killing spree across Boston. They’ve fled to Ireland, along with their father, to find some peace and escape the insanity cause by their killings. But a copycat killer leaves their signature mark after murdering a priest and lure Connor and Murphy back to Boston to finish what they started eight years ago. »

Jason Schwartzman Exclusive Interview Fantastic Mr. Fox

10 November 2009 12:10 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I absolutely loved director Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox.  The film is his first foray into stop-motion animation and it’s like he brought the genre to him rather than attempting to adapt to the genre.  Trust me; if you’re a fan of his previous work like Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, you’re going to love this movie.

As most of you know, Fantastic Mr. Fox is based on the best-selling children’s book by Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach) and it features the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Wally Wolodarsky, Eric Anderson, Michael Gambon, Willem Dafoe, and Owen Wilson.  But unlike some animated movies that cast famous actors to help sell tickets, everyone who provides a voice is perfect in this film.  Again, this is a great movie »

Pat Seals of Flyleaf Shares His Top Ten Horror Films

9 November 2009 10:24 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

As we've mentioned previously, November 10th is the release date of the band Flyleaf's new CD, entitled Memento Mori, and to help celebrate the occasion, their bass player, Pat Seals, has taken time out of his hectic schedule to prepare for Dread Central readers a list of his Top Ten favorite horror films.

Nothing relieves the stress of the holidays -- or anything really -- like a good horror flick, and Pat certainly has prepared an eclectic catalog that shows he knows his shit about our genre.

Without further ado, here's Pat's list (click each image to see the full poster):

1. The Addiction (1995) - Dir. Abel Ferrara, Starring Lili Taylor

This is my favorite vampire movie. It is the best. The best. Morality and the darkness of human nature are the focus, and Lili Taylor's performance is brutal. Plus, Christopher Walken waltzes in for a philosophical cameo. The »

Viral movies – from Paris with love

9 November 2009 2:00 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Robert Doisneau's famous photograph of a couple kissing has inspired a quirky new short film. Janine di Giovanni talks to its director

Yvan Attal is talking about one of the most famous images of Paris – Robert Doisneau's 1950 photograph, Le Baiser de l'Hotel de Ville, in which a young couple are locked in an embrace as all of Parisian life swirls around them.

This week, French actor-director Attal, 44 (and son-in-law of the late, great French singer Serge Gainsbourg), launches his own tribute to Paris, its lovers and its street life. His three-minute YouTube film, Kisses from Paris, features two beautiful young actors making out all over the city; it's as if Doisneau's couple have returned – and updated their kiss for a new generation. They speak in English, while on the soundtrack Rufus Wainwright sings a melancholy tune.

Attal, speaking in an art deco cinema in a trendy Parisian neighbourhood, was commissioned »

Spider-Man 4 Villain Is… Black Cat?

9 November 2009 1:48 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The past couple of weeks have been filled with a ton of Spider-Man talk with the majority of the chatter being focused on which villain fans can look forward to seeing our favorite web-slinger battle in Spider-man 4. Well, the speculation can subside (for the time being) as the folks over at Mania.com have heard from “reliable sources” that Sam Raimi is in the midst of casting the villains for the next installment of the Spider-Man franchise.

Some of the possibilities that we’ve heard were Bruce Campbell as Mysterio, Dr. Connors (Dylan Baker) as The Lizard and the possibility of William Defoe returning as Green Goblin.

With Sam Raimi receiving complete control over Spider-Man 4 (unlike Spider-Man 3) he has decided to go in a complete different direction than what was previously discussed and has allegedly chosen the formidable Felicia Hardy, known the fans around the world as »

Exclusive Video: Jason Schwartzman Is an Animal in The Fantastic Mr. Fox

9 November 2009 12:12 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Actor Jason Schwartzman is a member of an exclusive club and no ... I'm not talking about the Coppola family. While, Schwartzman is the nephew of the famed director and Nicolas Cage's cousin he is also a member of a prestigious group of actors that appear in Wes Anderson films. The talented ensemble includes Luke and Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Anjelica Huston, Willem Dafoe, Seymour Cassel and Michael Gambon, actors who have all appeared in more than one Wes Anderson film. Schwartzman himself made his film debut in Anderson's Rushmore and later appeared in The Darjeeling Limited but now returns to work with Anderson again in his new film The Fantastic Mr. Fox, opening in theaters on November 13th. The film, which is based on the classic children's book by author Roald Dahl features stop motion animation and also introduces Oscar winners George Clooney and Meryl Streep into the Anderson family of actors. »

This Week on Stage: 'The Understudy,' 'Idiot Savant,' and 'Nightingale'

7 November 2009 5:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

This week saw the too-rapid close of the Neil Simon revival Brighton Beach Memoirs on Broadway, as well as the opening of three Off Broadway productions: The Understudy, starring Justin Kirk, Julie White, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar (above); Idiot Savant with Willem Dafoe; and Nightingale with Lynn Redgrave. Melissa Bernardo gave a B+ to The Understudy but dinged it for the cast's somewhat mixed on-stage chemistry. Thom Geier calls Idiot Savant "one strange, head-scratching evening" and gives it a C+. As for Lynn Redgrave's one-woman show, Nightingale, I gave it a C and took issue with the production because "the »

“Ticket Stubs” Review: ‘Antichrist’ - Lars Von Trier’s controversial award winner

6 November 2009 3:15 PM, PST | MovieSet.com | See recent MovieSet.com news »

“Ticket Stubs” review of ‘Antichrist‘ by Austin Lugar

for MovieSet.com

In all regards, you should not watch ‘Antichrist‘. My position as a reviewer is to guide you into seeing or not seeing a film by providing my own opinions. Throughout this review, I shall remark a lot of the achievements of this film, but I warn you this is not a recommendation.

So why shouldn’t you see a film that I will label as technically good? When you look as Lars Von Trier’s canon, there are a variety of films designed to make you feel uneasy. His greatest films in my mind (Dogville, Dancer in the Dark, Breaking the Waves) are films that I have no interest in experiencing for a second time. Von Trier has the uncanny ability to delve in to the dark parts of the human psyche and create remarkable works of art from it. »

Herzog and Lynch’s My Son snags theatrical release

6 November 2009 7:35 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Absurda and Industrial Entertainment have announced that their film My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done has set a debut theatrical-release date. The movie marks the first collaboration between cinematic mavericks Werner Herzog and David Lynch, who directed and executive-produced respectively.

My Son, My Son will open Friday, December 11 at New York City’s IFC Center (323 6th Avenue), with playdates in other cities to follow. Though word from early screenings is that it’s not really a horror film, it does deal with rather twisted subject matter—a man (Bug’s Michael Shannon) who murders his mother with a sword while acting out a Sophocles play—and features a genre-centric cast including Antichrist’s Willem Dafoe, Sisters’ Chloe Sevigny, Udo Kier (who discussed the movie with us here) and Brad Dourif. You can see the movie’s official website, with a trailer and more photos, here.

Spider-Man 4: Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin is Done

6 November 2009 4:16 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

In recent weeks, there’s been some chatter as to what characters, or more specifically, villains, we will see in the upcoming fourth installment to the Spider-Man franchise.

First, we heard arguably crazy speculation that Bruce Campbell’s larger role in Spider-Man 4 would see him playing a villain such as Mysterio. Unlikely in the eyes of many fans, but we followed that up with a report on director Sam Raimi discussing the Spider-Man 4 villains where he admitted he favored the idea of The Lizard but wasn’t keen or familiar with the idea of Carnage.

Then, we finally got one confirmation on the topic of potential villains: Dylan Baker would in fact be returning as Dr. Curt Connors in the next movie but that didn’t necessarily mean he’d be transforming in the scaly green two-armed lizard, especially not if you can take Baker’s words as »

The Talking, Self-Eating Fox From Antichrist Has His Moment

6 November 2009 2:37 AM, PST | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Whatever your opinion of the genital-chopping, misogyny-cheering controversy stirred up by Lars von Trier’s Antichrist, there is one scene that is an undeniable cult novelty. Deep in the movie’s indeterminable midsection, Willem Dafoe’s character wanders into the woods and finds a mangy little fox cannibalizing itself, a fairly horrifying image. The horror, however, quickly turns to hilarity when the fox looks into the camera, and in an ominous voice declares “Chaos Reigns” before a slow fade to black.... »

Willem Dafoe: The Village Idiot and Our Town

5 November 2009 9:45 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

It's a fact: folks will flock to see Idiot Savant, Richard Foreman's new play at the Public Theater, just to see its star, Willem Dafoe, in a billowy blouse and skirt. Indeed, what a sight that is. Not to mention his hair in a top tail like a suma wrestler. There is no quirkier actor around -- nor one so well suited to Foreman's madness. Then again, look at Dafoe's film roles: he stars in Lars von Trier's controversial Antichrist, in theaters as I write. The "idiot savant" of the play, Dafoe's elastic face does drooling and delirium with fresh verve. He is aided in his idiosyncrasies -- i.e. inter-species golf with a giant duck -- by two women: Marie (Alenka Kraigher), evoking the blond velvet of a pre-Raphaelite damsel and Olga (Elina Lowensohn), an accented dominatrix in chaps,... »

Review: ‘Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant’ just for built-in fans

5 November 2009 6:53 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

The recent rise in melodramatic teen vampire fare has been interesting to witness. From the golden-hearted sparkling heartthrob in Twilight to the multitude of sappy TV dramas (sans True Blood), the watering down of the classic (and dapper!) “monster” from Eastern Europe has been both sad and alluring. It’s like passing by a car accident between a truckload of Nerf balls and the Munster-mobile.

In the case of Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, the Nerf truck totally decimated the poor Munster car. Soft in the middle and tragically predictable, the latest from Paul Weitz (brother to New Moon’s Chris Weitz) is fitting for its target audience, but doesn’t have enough meat for the entire family. For a movie based on a series of books aimed at the young adult genre, the film does a fantastic job of entertaining its core but doesn’t leave much for anybody over 16-years-old. »

Willem Dafoe to Re-Appear In Spider-Man 4?

4 November 2009 5:51 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Even though Norman Osborn aka The Green Goblin died in the first Spider-Man flick, the actor behind the mask, Willem Dafoe, managed to re-appear in both the second and third film in the series, through the diluted mind of Osborn Jr. But Harry Osborn (who was played by James Franco) died in the third movie, so that should supposedly be the end of the Osborns, right? Well, that might not be the case after all, at least not if Dafoe has anything to say about the matter, as he isn't opposed to re-appearing in the fourth flick, though he has yet to receive a call. "Let's put it this way — no one's called," Dafoe tells MTV News [1] when asked whether or not he will make a return. "I think it's possible, but I haven't heard anything." So how could it be possible? Perhaps The Green Goblin didn't die after all in the first movie, »

"The Fantastic Mr. Fox" is inching closer to its theatrical release date, and in anticipation of that, 20th Century Fox has brought out a brand new featurette and an inside look. The featurette comes out via Yahoo! Movies and takes a look at the unique recording process of the characters' voices. The inside look, in the meantime, revolves around Bill Murray as Badger.

"The Fantastic Mr. Fox" revolves around Mr. Fox who steals chickens, ducks, and turkeys from three mean, stinky and wealthy farmers, Boggis, Bunce and Bean, to feed his family. When the farmers had enough with his action, they are determined to kill him, endangering not only Mr. Fox's beloved family, but the whole animal community. Trapped underground and with not enough food to go around, he comes up with a plan. He gets the animals band together to fight back.

Motion Picture Purgatory: Auto Focus

3 November 2009 12:47 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

This week Trembles takes us a little off the beaten path into a true tale of sex addiction and murder: Paul Schrader's 2002 Auto Focus starring Greg Kinnear as TV star Bob Crane and Willem Dafoe as his video technician buddy John Carpenter (nope, not director John Carpenter of Halloween fame, but rather a sleazy swinger who gets credit for turning Crane into a sex addict).

For those unfamiliar with the story, Crane, star of 1960's TV series "Hogan's Heroes", dove into the freewheeling spirit of the 60s and 70s with relish, having affairs with numerous women and videotaping his exploits with Carpenter's help. He was murdered in a Scottsdale, Arizona, motel room in 1978, a crime that remains officially unsolved to this day.

Willem Dafoe Return for Spider-Man 4 "Possible"

3 November 2009 8:56 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Dylan Baker is returning for the upcoming Spider-Man 4 to possibly play the Lizard, but what about Willem Dafoe?

Dafoe played the Green Goblin in Spider-Man and then re-appeared, despite his character's death, in both sequels. With James Franco, who played Dafoe's son Harry Osborn, dying in Spider-Man 3, is there still a way for Dafoe to show up in Spider-Man 4? Dafoe told MTV that anything's "possible."

I think it's possible. But I haven't heard anything. Let's put it this way — no one's called.

How's that for leaving things open?
