Hi, Matt Canada here with a weekly column looking back at gay cinema classics. I think that alot of people, gay and straight alike, view gay films as formally, thematically, and socially ghettoised and sub par. It is my goal that this column will reflect the diversity, breadth, and quality of the gay canon. This body of films encompasses everything from those made by gay filmmakers dealing explicitly with gay issues (Milk); to gay authored films that are nominally straight stories, but are interpreted by many as allegorically commenting on Lavender themes (George Cukor's Rich and Famous); camp classics (Mommie Dearest); gay films authored by heterosexual directors, screenwriters and/or producers (Brokeback Mountain); and those "heterosexual films" that have always been appropriated by gay audiences as queer (All About Eve). With such a wide array of possible films to look at, this column will bring something unique to the table each weekend. »

As a follow up to the 'Streep at 60' posts I thought I'd leave an open discussion thread for each Streep nomination's competition through the years. Her first came for 1978's The Deer Hunter (my take on her role). The nominees were:
Dyan Cannon, Heaven Can WaitPenelope Milford, Coming HomeMaggie Smith, California Suite
Maureen Stapleton, InteriorsMeryl Streep, The Deer Hunter
The only nomination I've never understood from that shortlist is Milford's in Coming Home (a film I otherwise love). The Golden Globes differed slightly, skipping Smith and Milford to honor Carol Burnett in A Wedding and Mona Washbourne in Stevie. I know there was never a chance that Stockard Channing's classic rendition of "Rizzo" in Grease was going to be shortlisted but it's such a film stealing enduring delight I like to pretend that she was.
My vote would go to Maureen Stapleton, who served Woody Allen's Interiors perfectly, »

The 63rd Annual Tony Awards aired on CBS last night, kicking off with Sir Elton John, technical glitches, Liza at her Liza-ist, tons of hot musical theater guys, hair (beautiful hair), Dolly Parton, a gaggle of flying Billy Elliots, and what may be the single greatest television moment ever filmed ... Poison lead skank Bret Michaels being cold cocked by a giant "Broadway" sign.
Oh, and all this happens in the first ten minutes!

Watching the Tony Awards is always bittersweet for me. As much as I love seeing the best of Broadway on TV every year, it brings me closer to the realization that I'll probably never see any of these shows in person. The dream of moving to New York and becoming a theater groupie dies a little each time my knees crack when I »

Good baseball movies are hard to come by. You have Bull Durham, but even that’s a romantic comedy with baseball as an afterthought. The so-called classics are all great: For the Love of the Game, The Natural, A League of Their Own, etc. A few exist, but for the sheer volume of films made about our national pastime, you’d think we’d have gotten the “baseball movie” down to an art. Producing one Field of Dreams every 500 baseball movies isn’t a great ratio. Major League falls somewhere in that other 500; it’s neither a superb baseball movie nor a superb comedy. It simmers somewhere just below boiling and a notch above lukewarm.
It’s the premise which makes Major League such a catch. It’s the reverse of most sports films and yet it keeps to formula at the same time. The aberration from formula is the »

If you're anything like me (and my girlfriend), you love meerkats. In case you don't, let me ask how you can resist the adorable little critters, their huge eyes and their constantly wet nose? No need to answer. If you like meerkats, you're probably already familiar with Meerkat Manor, the long-running documentary / reality narrated by Bill Nighly (or Sean Astin / Stockard Channing if you live in the Us). The shows' stars like Flower, Mozart or Zaphod are so "famous" that they have their own imdb pages with enraged fans posting on Flower's message board about the need for a more detailed biography or at least putting in Flower's date of death on her resumé. Today you can read an interview with Brollyman, who gives his first interview here about doing Meerkat Manor in addition to some other animal reality programs such as Lemur Island and Lemur Street.

The Peter J. Owens Award—named after longtime San Francisco benefactor of arts and charitable organizations Peter J. Owens (1936-1991)—honors an actor whose work exemplifies brilliance, independence and integrity. This year’s recipient Robert Redford joins such previous honorees as Angelica Houston, Geena Davis, Danny Glover, Gérard Depardieu, Tim Roth, Harvey Keitel, Annette Benning, Nicholas Cage, Sean Penn, Wynona Ryder, Stockard Channing, Kevin Spacey, Dustin Hoffman, Chris Cooper, Joan Allen, Ed Harris, Robin Williams and Maria Bello.
The onstage tribute to Redford included a clip reel, an onstage conversation with Phil Bronstein, and a spanking new print of Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Graham Leggat introduced Phil Bronstein as Vice President and Editor-at-Large of the San Francisco Chronicle. Phil began his career as film reviewer and Leggat mentioned that he once wrote a very long review in which he completely forgot to mention the title of the film. »

Grease has been established as a film musical institution. The songs are memorable, the cast is superb and the story serves as the perfect connection to string you along from one melodic fix to the next. Even if it's weird to watch a collection of 20-somethings act like high school kids and sing about beauty school, summer nights and Sandra Dee, you'd be hard pressed to deny that Grease doesn't pull it off with a charming level of panache. Converting a play to film often comes at some expense to the material (this remains true in Grease), but the final product of Grease excels rather than falters. Director Randal Kleiser found the perfect formula for stage to film translation; as a result Grease has lingered as a classic musical beloved by adolescents and adults alike.
Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) and Danny Zuko (John Travolta) had a summer together that, if »

You know about the Triple Crown of Acting, right? It's when an actor manages to stretch across three mediums and snag all three of the top competitive prizes: Tony (theater), Emmy (television) and Oscar (film).
To date only 15 actors* have accomplished this but the number could jump to 17 soon. Currently the rarified list reads like so...
Jack Albertson (Tony: 65, Oscar: 69, Emmy: 75)
Anne Bancroft (Tony: 58, Oscar: 63, Emmy: 99)
Ingrid Bergman (Oscar: 45, Tony: 47, Emmy: 60)
Shirley Booth (Tony: 49, Oscar: 53, Emmy: 62)
Melvyn Douglas (Tony: 60, Oscar: 64, Emmy: 68) Did you know that this Hud star was Illeanna Douglas's grandfather? I certainly didn't.
Jeremy Irons (Tony: 84, Oscar: 91, Emmy: 97)
Thomas Mitchell (Oscar: 40, Tony: 53, Emmy: 53)
Rita Moreno (Oscar: 62, Tony: 75, Emmy: 77)

Chicago – Get on your dancing shoes before you hit the floor for the latest version of the toe-tapping Blu-Ray Round-Up, a special edition with three beloved flicks from the ’70s and ’80s with musical beats.
Only one (“Grease”) may be an actual musical, but people still remember the great soundtrack from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “Saturday Night Fever” was all about The Bee Gees. All three titles were released on Tuesday, May 5th, 2009.

The Tony Award Nominations are upon us. As is my inconsistent tradition, I thought I'd share a little bit about a movies you can rent or think about to create an unfulfilling celluloid guilty-by-association approximation of the Broadway experience of the 2008/2009 season before the TONYs roll around on June 7th. Not everyone gets to New York to see the shows. And even if you live here, like me, you don't get to them in your financially challenged years. Tony Winners Cynthia Nixon (who seems to be everywhere lately, right?) and In the Height's man Lin-Manuel Miranda are announcing them live any minute now.
If you want a reminder of what's eligible which you can use to see who got snubbed check out this eligibility chart.
