Motion Picture Purgatory: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

3 December 2009 2:34 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

We know it's not exactly horror, but when Trembles speaks, we listen! And when Werner Herzog directs Nicolas Cage, we can't help but watch transfixed.

Here's a quick synopsis of the flick: Terence McDonagh (Cage) is a drug- and gambling-addled detective in post-Katrina New Orleans investigating the killing of five Senegalese immigrants. With a cast that also includes Val Kilmer, Eva Mendes, Jennifer Coolidge, Fairuza Balk, Brad Dourif, and Michael Shannon, what's not to love?

Oscar MythBusting: One Day They'll Be Nominated!

2 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Most fans of established actors believe that one day their favorite will be nominated for an Oscar. In 2009 campaigns hopes are particularly high for Sandra Bullock, Alfred Molina, Colin Firth and Christopher Plummer. Fans of James McAvoy and Sam Rockwell still hold out longshot hope. But guess what? The odds are, generally speaking, against them on February 2nd (two months hence!) when the lucky 20 are called.

Most actors aren't ever nominated for the big prize. People seemed surprise to read in an old Oscar Mythbusting column I wrote years ago that the majority of nominated actors (approximately 67%) never receive a second nomination. But I did the research and it's true. Even less likely than a second nomination: a first one. Consider this...

The following (living) legends have still never been nominated despite rich bodies of work and several classic films or exuberantly praised performances: Mia Farrow, Isabelle Huppert, Christopher Plummer and Donald Sutherland. »

Whatever Happened to 'Tekken'?

1 December 2009 9:45 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Splendid news regarding the upcoming 'Tekken' movie adaptation, unless you’re a fan of the video game series who doesn’t speak German.

According to Variety, Splendid Film has acquired the rights to 'Tekken', along with a number of other fantasy and horror movies, for distribution in the German-speaking territories. The other films include Marcus Nispel’s upcoming Conan; the horror-thriller The Collector, helmed by Marcus Dunstan; and Mr. Nobody, a supernatural thriller starring Val Kilmer.

Dwight Little’s Tekken was the film that really grabbed my attention, since I recall the announcement of it roughly two years ago. It premiered at the American Film Market last month, but its current U.S. distributors — The Weinstein Company, Summit Entertainment, and Crystal Sky Pictures — have remained relatively quiet. Unfortunately, the combination of only a vague U.S. 2010 release date, along with the announcement of an overseas distributor »

What are the best TV ads of the noughties?

1 December 2009 3:53 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Let us know the TV commercials that have stood out for you over the past decade

Looking back at the TV adverts of the past decade, it's difficult not to be struck by the creativity on show. Rather than the movie-influenced blockbuster ads of the 90s, much of the industry turned to quirky conceptual ideas. Advertisers also exploited the growing power of the web – not only did successful campaigns make their mark on TV, they also went viral.

Some relied on special effects, some relied on exhaustive preparation by art teams – but some of the best were just a clever idea, simply executed. Who would have guessed that a man in a gorilla suit playing the drums would have been one of the most talked-about ads of the decade?

Below are some of our favourite ads of the noughties – let us know what you think we've missed out.

Val Kilmer On 50 Cent: 'I'm A Criminal... And He's My Friend'

24 November 2009 2:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

From MTV.Com: 50 Cent is a busy man — he just released a new album, Before I Self Destruct, and film of the same name, and he's working on several other movies in various stages of development. He's also an unpredictable man — as evidenced by his double-take-inducing appearance at last week's "New Moon" premiere. So, it makes sense that the rapper/actor/mogul would show up at the American Music Awards with Val Kilmer as his "date," eager to tell everyone that he's even busier and more unpredictable than they think.

"It's exciting," he said of the 2009 AMAs, walking down the red carpet alongside a grinning Kilmer, who could best be described as being dressed like Truman Capote's evil twin. "We came out here to enjoy the festivities. Val and I are going to sit and see what's going on. Are you wondering why we're together?"

Uncanny Birthday Suits

Celebrating cinematic folk, born on this day 11/23. Get out your kazoos.

Franco, Maxwell and Harpo. Half of the fun of building these posts

is these completely nonsensical groupings!

1859 Billy the Kid, outlaw. I've always thought it a mystery as to exactly why people routinely idolize characters whom they would never want to meet in real life. Murderers, criminals, thieves, (especially gangsters)... they all get the silver screen pedestal treatment. Billy has been portrayed dozens of times and Val Kilmer, Emilio Estevez, Kris Kristofferson, Buster Crabbe and Paul Newman have all done the job.

1888 Harpo Marx I'm embarrassed to say this but I can never remember which Marx Bros is which. When I watch 30s comedies, I almost always select a screwball romance.

1892 Erté artist over whom wee Nathaniel obsessed, wanting a whole animated movie to spring forth from his theatrical illustrations of ladies in elaborate headdresses and fab gowns.

50 Cent Convinces Val Kilmer To Star In His Movie Somehow

22 November 2009 10:06 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

With the recent downfall of the record industry, it.s necessary for musicians to become brands in place of just playing music. You can.t only be the dude who plays a guitar; you have to own a clothing brand as well. You can.t just sing a pop song; you have to endorse a deodorant too. Unfortunately, that rule works for rappers as well. According to WENN.com, 50 Cent has sold his first script and has already hired Val Kilmer to co-star in it with him. The film will be titled The Gun and will follow two drug dealing friends as they take on the problems that drug dealers face. I don.t think they mean making friends and trying not to seem sketchy. I imagine these are the kinds of drug dealers that get shot in the face and then rap about it. The movie will be produced »

Review: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

22 November 2009 6:27 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Remember Nicolas Cage? He doesn't work very often so the name may not immediately ring a bell, but maybe some of his films might jar your memory... Birdy, Raising Arizona, Wild At Heart, Adaptation? (Not to be confused with Nicholas Z. Kage, an "actor" who sleepwalks through roles and films like Fire Birds, Trapped In Paradise, Snake Eyes, Gone In Sixty Seconds, National TreasureGhost Rider, Next, Bangkok Dangerous, and many, many more.) He's an actor who craves odd and interesting characters but manages to shape them into real, fully developed people that sometimes outshine the films they inhabit. Where other actors just present an idiosyncratic caricature he crafts people who are more than simply the sum of their quirks. So as I said earlier, Cage doesn't make a lot of movies. The good news though is that after a multi-year absence from movie screens he's finally returned in Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. Detective »

There was a wide variety of looks on the American Music Awards red carpet, but there was one overriding theme: black and sparkles, be it sequins or jewels.

Selena Gomez wore a little sparkly dress cinched with a belt, while Keri Hilson funked up her short, long-sleeved black dress with lots of sequins. Kelly Clarkson also went with classic black, in a dress with shimmering silver-sequin detailing. Alicia Keys broke all the color rules in her corseted tie-dye dress with sequins.

Nicolas Cage Got Into The Spirit For 'Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans'

20 November 2009 2:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

From MTV.Com: Seventeen years ago, the legendary Harvey Keitel launched the second act of his movie career with a pair of tough-guy instant classics: Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs" and Abel Ferrara's "Bad Lieutenant." A crack-pipe-smoking breath of fresh air, "Lieutenant" predated "The Shield" by a decade in telling the Nc-17 story of a junkie, gambler, killer cop on a downward spiral.

During the past year, film buffs have been up in arms over director Werner Herzog's "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans." Starring Nicolas Cage as the type of at-wit's-end madman who puts a gun to an old lady's temple to get information, the flick co-stars Eva Mendes and Val Kilmer and packs one potent surprise: Although it has little to do with Keitel's movie, it is a deranged, worthy successor.

This Weekend at the Movies: November 20, 2009

This weekend the talk is going to be all about The Twilight Saga: New Moon and early reports from Nikki Finke say it has a chance to beat the midnight numbers turned in by The Dark Knight in 2008. Unfortunately, the film didn't hit home with critics as the 49% RottenTomatoes rating the first film earned has fallen to 27% for New Moon. Will audiences feel the same drop?

The Twilight Saga: New Moon I reviewed this one and have said my peace, no sense in adding any more as it now belongs to the audience to make up their mind. However, I will still point you to my review.

This film is rated PG-13 for some violence and action. Click Here For The Gallery Of 83 Pictures My Review / Get More Info

The Blind Side For a safe film that takes absolutely no risks it's actually quite good. You can read my full review right here. »

[Movie Review] Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

20 November 2009 1:38 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

To call Port of Call New Orleans a remake or a re-imagining of Bad Lieutenant would be a mistake; at least beyond an attempt to drum up publicity, which it definitely received when the original Bad Lieutenant’s director, Abel Ferrara, publicly wished for the deaths of everyone involved in this film. Especially that of its new helmer, the fearless Werner Herzog.

After watching the movie, it would be foolish to overlook the fact that it bears almost no resemblance to Ferrara’s film. It doesn’t even have the same titular character. Despite sharing the same moniker and the same appetite for moral compromise, Nicolas Cage’s goofy Detective McDonagh has a vastly different personality than that of Harvey Keitel’s nameless cult figure.

We first meet Cage’s drug-fueled, money-skimming maniac cop when he’s raiding a precinct’s flooded locker room in the days following Hurricane Katrina, »

Nicolas Cage: Bad To The Bone

By

Alex Simon

It’s an inevitable event in every accomplished artist’s life: if you go back on the timeline of their existence and stop in adolescence, almost all of our greatest actors, writers, filmmakers, musicians and painters went through tumultuous, tortured teenage years, often scorned, almost universally ridiculed by their peers and elders alike for the cardinal sin of being “weird.” Most people run from their inner nerd as they grow into adulthood, masking it behind toned muscle, fine clothing and the right haircut, struggling to be that cool guy or gal whom we knew had all the answers and the clearest skin back when such things started to be de rigeur in our lives (and if you live in Southern California, continue to be).

Nicolas Cage is that rare movie star who not only never seemed to care if he was cool, »

Movie Review: “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans”

19 November 2009 8:08 PM, PST | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Seen on: November 17, 2009

The players: Director: Werner Herzog, Writer: William M. Finkelstein, Cast: Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, Xzibit

Facts of interest: Won the Christopher D. Smithers Award in Venice.

The plot: The film follows a corrupt New Orleans cop who's addicted to drugs and tries to solve a brutal murder.

Our thoughts: Nicolas Cage is really bad in Werner Herzog’s “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,” and I’m so glad and relieved he is. It’s great to see him back in total control of an intriguing role after a whole bunch of recent failures, and he’s undoubtedly the main reason this film worked for me so well. In other words, Cage totally delivers the goods. »

Ask Him Again, His Soul is Still Dancing. 15 minutes with Werner Herzog.

One of the pleasures of going to film festivals are the Q&A sessions afterwards.  If you read humour pieces regarding this aspect of the festival experience, they are often snarky little pieces about the awful questions fielded by audience members, or folks trying to pass the director along a screenplay or simply blubbering "I love all your movies" in the starstruck awe.  Yes, those things happen (often), but with good moderation from the programmer/host and an exceptional speaker, you could end up with something like this quarter hour with German director Werner Herzog.   The second of two public screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival went down like gangbusters at the Elgin Theatre and most of the satisfied, quite entertained, audience stuck around to talk shop.  Moderated by programmer Colin Geddes and with Herzog in high form - while most would say that Roger Ebert is 'fighting cancer, »
