Sandra Bullock's new film blind-sides New Moon at Us box office

3 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The Blind Side rose to No 1 in its third weekend on release, giving Sandra Bullock her second box-office chart-topper this year

The winner

It's rare that a movie climbs up to No 1 in its third weekend, so hats off to The Blind Side for pulling it off. True to its name, Warner Bros' true-life drama snuck up and slipped past Summit's leviathan New Moon, adding an estimated $20.4m (£12.4m) to boost its running total to $129.3m. Sandra Bullock plays the mentor of a homeless African-American kid who helps him become an accomplished American footballer. Now there's talk of an Oscar nomination. With the five most likely contenders at this stage being Helen Mirren (The Last Station) Carey Mulligan (An Education), Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia), Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) and Abbie Cornish (Bright Star), Sandy Bullock has a shot. Blimey.

Bullock is enjoying the best box-office year of her career when you »

Eastwood: 'Damon does a terrific job'

5 hours ago | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Clint Eastwood has praised Matt Damon, who he directed in Invictus. Speaking to Parade, Eastwood explained that Damon is a better actor than he was. "It's fun working with young Matt," he said. "He's great and does a terrific job. I'd look at him often and think, 'I wonder if I was that good when I was his age'. "Chances are I wasn't. But it was fun to be vicarious and think, 'Yes, that's a role I might have done'." Eastwood added that he works on (more) »

Freeman 'always knew he'd play Mandela'

8 hours ago | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Morgan Freeman has said that he spent his life preparing to play Nelson Mandela. Freeman, who stars as the leader in Clint Eastwood's Invictus, told Parade that he felt comfortable repeating Mandela's lines. "This may sound stupid, but as an actor you embody the role, and whatever you say is from total conviction," he explained. Freeman revealed that he first met Mandela in the 1990s, adding: "He told me he wanted me to play him in a movie someday. I said, 'Then I need access to you, and (more) »

Original Screenplay For Jack Ryan 5

8 hours ago | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Mace Neufield produced the first, Alec Baldwin-starring Jack Ryan movie, The Hunt For Red October in 1990, and stayed with the franchise through the Harrison Ford years of Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, and the Ben Affleck reboot The Sum of All Fears. He's also on board the mooted new revival with Chris Pine as Tom Clancy's CIA superspook, and had some surprising information at a recent press conference for Clint Eastwood's Invictus. There are eight novels as-yet unfilmed in the Ryanverse, but Untitled Jack Ryan Movie is not one of them. "We ran out of books," says Nuefield. "Red Rabbit was the last one, and we just couldn't seem to get a script out of it." Red Rabbit is one of only two novels, alongside The Cardinal of the Kremlin, in which Ryan is young enough for Pine's portrayal to be book-faithful. But those aren't »

Preview: Invictus

17 hours ago | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

In the 1950’s, a western TV show called Rawhide hit Us airwaves. One of several series about the old west, it captivated adults and children alike. Rawhide featured an ensemble cast of largely unknown actors, including a young man named Clint Eastwood. Eastwood had appeared in TV and film before, but it was here he really found fame. After Rawhide ended, Eastwood made a handful of TV shows and movies, until his big break came along. Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars and it’s follow ups made Eastwood into an icon. He went on to play numerous tough guy parts, invariably a cowboy or cop, and was very successful.

He made his directorial debut early on, often combining his newfound talent with his acting. He met with mild success until his 1992 western Unforgiven. It was hailed as one of the best westerns of all times, and gained Eastwood alot of credibility. »

The Blind Side Rules a Slow Weekend at the Box Office

20 hours ago | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Warner Bros. Pictures will be opening their eyes in delight as The Blind Side not only continues to perform well beyond expectations, but managed to topple box office gorilla The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

Weekend box office estimates have The Blind Side with Sandra Bullock pulling in $20.4 million from Friday through Sunday for a domestic gross of approximately $130 million and counting. New Moon came in second with $15.7 million which might be disappointing until you look at the worldwide gross which has passed $570 million which is hardly worth Summit barking about.

A trio of newcomers had a rough time keeping pace in the typically sluggish weekend after Thanksgiving. Brothers with stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman took third place with $9.7 million, Armored mustered $6.6 million and Everybody's Fine with Robert DeNiro wasn't so fine with $4 million.

Not in the top 10 but worth mentioning is the strong performance of Jason Reitman »

London, Dec 5 (Ians) Oscar winning actor Morgan Freeman, who will soon be seen playing former South African leader Nelson Mandela on the big screen, insists that he has been preparing for this role for years.

Freeman, who first met Mandela in the early 1990s, said: “He told me he wanted me to play him in a movie someday. For that I asked him to give me personal access so that I could understand his body language. He readily agreed,” starpulse.com quoted Freeman as saying.

“So anytime we were anywhere in proximity after that we would meet. I have always been preparing for this role even before I stepped in front of the camera as him,” he said.

Freeman would be donning this role in Clint Eastwood’s. »

The Bourne Ultimatum: Matt Damon Out Without Paul Greengrass

5 December 2009 9:15 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

We recently reported that Paul Greengrass had confirmed he won't be returning to director the fourth Jason Bourne movie. This presents a problem for Universal, since Damon's loyalty to Greengrass is well known, and most assumed the actor wouldn't do any more Bourne films without him.

Damon himself confirmed this during a recent press junket for Clint Eastwood's Invictus, whereupon he indicated that he would not return to the franchise without Greengrass, reports ComingSoon.net.

"When [Greengrass] wants to do one, we'll do it," Damon said.

Asked specifically if that meant he'd only do another Bourne film if Greengrass came back for another one, Damon replied: "Yeah, I've always said that, but I think it'll happen down the road. We just don't have a script yet."

Whether this suggests that Damon is unaware of Greengrass' departure from the franchise, or if that departure news is premature or partially erroneous is unclear, »

Geoff Dyer on Where Eagles Dare

5 December 2009 4:09 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Brian G Hutton, 1968

I keep waiting for the day when Where Eagles Dare begins to pall. I mean, how many films can stand up to multiple viewings over such a vast span of time (about 40 years)? In fact, the opposite seems to be happening – it gets better, yields deeper layers of meaning, every time I see it.

Adapted from the novel by Em Forster… no, hang on, that's Where Angels Fear to Tread, but there's a point to be made here. Where Eagles Dare is a great title, anticipating the widespread popularity of the Sas motto "Who Dares Wins", even though it was made years before the storming of the Iranian embassy in 1980, of which the film could be seen either as a prophetic allegory or a direct inspiration. And the title is not just a sonorous bit of rhetoric plucked from Shakespeare. No, the castle scaled by Richard Burton, »

Matt Damon on Bourne 4 and Paul Greengrass

5 December 2009 2:30 AM, PST | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

Matt Damon's had a very busy 2009 and 2010 isn't looking like it's going to be any slower for the popular Oscar-winner. Damon earned positive reviews for his starring role in the comedy The Informant! and he's starring as the captain of a South African rugby team in Clint Eastwood's Invictus, set to hit theaters on December 11th. Damon joined Eastwood and his co-star Morgan Freeman on the red carpet for the La premiere of Warner Bros Pictures' Invictus (I'll have my full red carpet interview up soon) and of course the topic of Bourne #4 came up. With Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass just announcing he's bowing out of the fourth Bourne film, it's been speculated that his departure will signal the departure of Damon from the franchise as well.

However, Damon told us he thinks Bourne #4 will still happen someday. "We just don't have a script »

Nbr Still Crazy For Clint & Clooney

4 December 2009 8:28 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The National Board of Review have announced their winners. Their ceremony will be held on.

Film: Up In The Air

Director: Clint Eastwood, Invictus

Actor (tie): Morgan Freeman, Invictus and George Clooney, Up In The Air

This is Clooney's 3rd personal Nbr prize in 7 years. The situation with Clint Eastwood is yet more extreme. This is Clint's 4th personal Nbr prize in 10 years. Every film he's made since 2003 has found a home in their top ten list -- all seven of them, even Flags of Our Fathers -- and in two of those year's his films hogged 20% of their top ten list. In addition to Clint's 4 prizes, 2 of his films have won their Best Picture prize. Actress: Carey Mulligan, An Education

Supporting Actor: Woody Harrelson, The Messenger

Is this an awards season meme we didn't see coming ("time to honor Woody!") or a minor wave that will subside before Oscars hit shore? »

No Greengrass = No Damon

4 December 2009 7:05 PM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Just a few days ago, we let you know that Bourne director Paul Greengrass had walked away from Bourne 4. There were three possible options we left you with, regarding what would happen with the movie without Greengrass attached– one being that Matt Damon wouldn’t remain on the project without Greengrass.

Well, it looks like that’s going to be the case.

At this morning’s press conference for his upcoming film Invictus, Matt Damon addressed Greengrass’s leaving when asked about it.

When asked what the status of Bourne is now that Greengrass has left, Damon responded that he’s uninterested in reprising his role as Jason Bourne unless Greengrass is directing. He did say that he thinks it will end up happening, that Greengrass will return once a solid script is in place.

For now though, it looks like Universal is either going to have to hold off »

Untitled Jack Ryan Film Details Surface

Producer Mace Neufield, who is developing the new Jack Ryan film, was on hand at the press conference for the upcoming film Clint Eastwood film, Invictus. There he also spoke about the Untitled Jack Ryan Project as well and revealed that,”We pick him up while he’s on Wall Street,” and while Neufield wouldn’t go into too many specifics on the main story he did outline how they would handle and approach the infamous character.

“The Jack Ryan movies have never been action films. They’re kind of ‘thinking man’s thrillers’. Jack is refered to as a water-walker because of his ability to jump ahead to a conclusion. That’s very big in all the Jack Ryan films and that’s why we want to portray him. He’s a teacher, he’s a historian. He’s a linguist and he’s really smart.”

Matt Damon Jealous of Buds Brad and George?

4 December 2009 2:08 PM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

At last night's Beverly Hills premiere of Invictus, Clint Eastwood's Oscar contender staring Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman, things still somehow became about Brangelina. Gosh, what a shocker, huh? Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie showed up with their cutie son Maddox. Not wanting to totally upstage, they didn't do the red carpet, so the gorgeous fam just went inside to support their pals. Now, we love us some glitzy Brange as much as the next star-struck folk, but we adore Damon more, sorry. He's a totally down-to-earth sweetheart, but somehow he gets overlooked by the gossip-craving public. Why the hell is that? Humpy Matt told us why he's glad he's not Brad or Bff... »

New Photos & Clip from Clint Eastwood’s Invictus

4 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

With the end of the year approaching and new media being released for films next year, I find myself really looking forward to 2010. One of the movies that I’m looking forward to is Invictus which stars Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman and is directed by Clint Eastwood.

Invictus tells the story of how the country was united through sport, in this case Rugby. Damon plays Francois Pienaar, the South African captain tasked with convincing his white team mates that times need to change. It’s out in the UK 5th February 2010. You can see the trailer here.

Below we have some new images (click them below to enlarge) that Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Spyglass Entertainment have released plus a clip from the movie which was released on Yahoo earlier today. You can head over to Yahoo to view it in HD.

'Up in the Air,' National Board of Review kick off awards season

4 December 2009 1:57 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

"Up in the Air" just hit theaters today, but already the O-word is being bandied about.

The movie won best picture honors from the National Board of Review Thursday. The Nbr is usually among the first groups to announce its award winners in the run-up to the Oscars.

The last two Nbr winners -- "No Country for Old Men" and "Slumdog Millionaire" -- have gone on to win best picture at the Academy Awards (though its record as an Oscar predictor prior to that is far less reliable).

Directed by Jason Reitman, "Up in the Air" stars George Clooney as a perpetually traveling contractor who fires people for a living. "Up in the Air" also won best supporting actress for "Twilight: New Moon" co-star Anna Kendrick and best adapted screenplay.

The board also chose Clooney as best actor -- an honor he shares with "Invictus" star Morgan Freeman.

Matt Damon Believes Paul Greengrass Will Return for Bourne 4; Also Provides Updates on Liberace and True Grit

4 December 2009 1:22 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Steve is currently at the press junket for Clint Eastwood’s Invictus and while there he was able to get updates from Matt Damon on Steven Soderbergh’s biopic Liberace, the Coen Brothers adaptation of True Grit, and most importantly, what’s happening with Bourne 4 now that director Paul Greengrass has left the project.  Damon provided brief updates on all of these in less than a minute.  It was impressive.

According to Damon, they’re still waiting on a script for Bourne 4 but that he’s planning to wait for Greengrass and when Greengrass wants to do it, they’ll do it.  He also says that he won’t make a fourth Bourne without Greengrass but he’s optimistic that the director will return at some point down the road.  As for Liberace, they’re planning on shooting it in the summer, and he confirmed he’s playing the role »
