Red Cliff Review

16 July 2008 8:59 PM, PDT | From TwitchFilm.net | See recent Twitch news

[Many thanks to good friend Anita Wong - gone now on a lengthy sojourn to Taiwan - for passing along this review of John Woo’s Red Cliff.]

I grew up on a healthy diet of John Woo films, back in his heyday, when every film was a masterpiece. As a child, I used to think that Chow Yun Fat had surgically implanted a toothpick between his teeth, and that someone had sewed a pair of guns to his hands the way mothers sew mittons to coats. Whenever he was standing in a scene, I would have to tilt my head, because he just didnt seem right unless he was on his back or flying sideways through the air, guns ablazin’. My cousin and I would reinact all the scenes where Chow and [the other guy] would point guns at each other’s head while spouting calm, witty dialogue; sometimes we would spin in circles to emulate the camera moving round and round the pair.

I stopped watching John Woo films when he started working with the whities. I didn’t

New ‘Bangkok Dangerous’ clip hits

30 June 2008 9:40 AM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

I’m sure by now you’ve seen the trailer for Nicholas Cage’s upcoming action thriller “Bangkok Dangerous,” a remake of Danny and Oxide Pang’s 1999 flick of the same title. Cage slips into the role of a ruthless hit man who travels to Bangkok to pull off a series of jobs and ends up falling in love with a local.

Even though the Pang brothers return to helm the Hollywood version of their own film, I’m not really excited about “Bangkok Dangerous.” The first trailer didn’t impress me at all, and the story sounds like something we’ve seen too many times already. What really annoys me though is Cage’s hair. It’s almost as terrible as in “Next.”

Anyway, a new clip from the flick debuted online a couple of days ago, and you can check it out below. It’s not that exciting,

Nicholas Cage, Pierce Brosnan join ‘The Ghost’

24 June 2008 2:22 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

MTV News just announced that Nicholas Cage and Pierce Brosnan have signed on to star in Roman Polanski’s upcoming thriller “The Ghost.”

Based on the novel by Robert Harris, the film focuses on a ghostwriter who’s under pressure to finish the memoir of a former prime minister. But when the author stumbles across a perilous conspiracy that could implicate the ex-politician, he has to choose between his own safety and his commitment to his employer.

Brosnan will play the former prime minister, while Cage will portray the ghostwriter. Polanski is directing a script he wrote with Harris.

If everything goes according to plan, the project should enter production this fall.

I can definitely see Brosnan in the role of a former British prime minister, but Cage as the writer to his memoir? I don’t know. What do you think? Will they make a good team?

Will Stallone and Schwarzenegger Open a Chain of Planet Bollywood Restaurants, Too?

23 June 2008 10:02 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Bollywood is set to invade Hollywood, signing Sylvester Stallone as the first major American actor to star in an Indian film. The news gets even better, fans of the bizarro world, because Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will also play a role in the film.

Variety reports that Bollywood stars Ashkay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor headline Incredible Love, about an Indian stuntman who travels to Hollywood, becomes one of the best in the business, but is overwhelmed by sadness because he can't find true love. I say, don't worry, friend, Jennifer Aniston will be on the market again in no time.

Incredible Love will be the first Bollywood flick shot at Universal Studios and will have the highest budget in that country's history. Granted, Stallone isn't the star he was 15 years ago and Arnold is probably only in it for a couple of scenes - which he agreed to do no doubt

Can Will Smith Remain Bulletproof After 'Hancock'?

20 June 2008 5:40 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Anne Thompson at Variety has a great article about movie stars and their box office reliability. That's a big topic in the middle of summer. Launching giant event movies is easier when you know people love your star. Her thesis is that some actors reach a point where they can do no wrong, that even if Will Smith made a bunch of hideous movies, audiences would still respond positively because he's in what Thompson calls The Fluke Zone.

As it happens, Smith hasn't made a bunch of hideous movies, and it's untrue that most major movie stars do. I would say that Nicolas Cage and Julia Roberts probably have the most litter on their lawns in that department, but Tom Cruise, an in-his-prime Harrison Ford, and even Arnold Schwarzenegger rarely made tremendous mistakes. We're talking something catastrophic of the Love Guru vintage. They've all been in bad movies,

Turner Refuses To Talk About Cage Libel Victory

30 May 2008 5:16 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actress Kathleen Turner is determined not to land herself into trouble again - by refusing to comment on her recent libel suit with Nicholas Cage.

Last month, Cage won a libel lawsuit against his Peggy Sue Got Married co-star at London's High Court, after claiming Turner's autobiography Send Yourself Roses was full of false claims about him.

In the book - which was serialised in British newspaper The Daily Mail - Turner alleged Cage deliberately disobeyed his director uncle Francis Ford Coppola on the set of their 1986 movie, adding he also found himself in trouble with police while filming.

In addition, Turner accused the actor of drink-driving and theft in her memoirs.

Turner is now trying to put her legal woes behind her, and, during a promotional book tour of London on Thursday, refused to answer reporters' questions on Cage.

When asked for her thoughts on the lawsuit, Turner replied: "I'm not talking about it - sorry. Next!"

The actress is currently promoting a newly published version of the book in the British capital, after she was ordered to insert a correction and apology to Cage into copies of her book.

Cage's Saturn Productions, Carrey's Jc 23 Entertainment, Clooney's Smokehouse Productions and Hanks' Playtone productions are all set to receive a share of the cash.

Brad Pitt's Plan B company will also benefit from the move - which is hoped to provide Hollywood with a vital financial injection and move at least 30 movie projects into production.
