Donald "Ducky" Mallard is a good friend of Gibbs' and he's an anthropologist. He also likes to comfort himself by telling his "ghost" stories to his patients and stories about Jethro. He's number one fan, though, is Jimmy Palmer, his assistant. Ducky built up so many stories about his past that his willing to share them with his patients, even if they are all dead, and he loves that Jimmy admires of his stories. Gibbs will come in the middle of his story telling and he'll update his friend and get back to the case and report his findings. Ducky also admires Abby, and doesn't protest to Gibbs' way of telling his colleagues (DiNozzo, Kate, McGee and Ziva) when they're being or doing something foolish. It's better than a slap across the face.
