Minimalism

Recently I discovered Old Joy by visiting this messageboard, so thanks for that!

However, it has implanted a burdening desire to discover more films, which can be categorized as minimalist.

Noi Albinoi, The Straight Story, Stranger than Paradise, Waking life, Tony Takitani and possibly Lost in Translation are my favourites because they're all quite serene, slow paced and dreamy. Especially Waking Life - Wow, I love that film because it utilises art work that help depict a dream world perfectly and scene by scene it quite deliberately becomes more and more abstract to symbolise the deeper sleep thought and the scenes become almost hypnotic, it's like entering a trance (the scene with the old ladies for eg).

Any way, enough of my pointlesnessnessness - Anyone have any more minimalist favourites?

Don't know if it's "minimalism" but here's a few films i loved that might interest you:

Knife In the Water
Repulsion
The Silence
Winter Light
Dogville
Requiem
Dirty Pretty Things
Bubble

And if you liked Waking Life you might like Tideland.

Cheers for them!

Given them all a good read and have decided to see Knife in the Water and Bubble.
They seem the closest to what I'm interested in at the moment.

I saw Tideland about a year ago and I must admit, was a bit undecided about it. The weird and eery tone didn't sit too well with me but it was imaginative enough to keep me reasonably interested till the end.

Cool, Knife in the Water is an awesome film. Bubble is very worth seeing too, very unusual.

Tideland is not for everyone, that is for sure. Personally i could relate to it in some strange way, so maybe thats why i liked it.

Brown Bunny
Gerry
I actually didn't care for these (especially Brown Bunny) but I think they would definitely qualify as minimalist.

Gerry would kill most typical american movie goers. Even I had a hard time sitting through some of the insanely long scenes of just the guys walking. But over all it was a very interesting experiecne..that I wouldnt want to sit through again.. And Tideland was great personally, it just appealed to my twisted side I guess. Lots of good movies listed on here ^^^

I enjoyed Brown Bunny a lot. To me it's a very stripped and bare Solyaris on Earth.
Gus Van Sant's Death Trilogy was a lot of fun for me because I love seeing movies that test one's patience.

Frank Vitchard: Oh yeah? Well, you're about to be in... dead place

I can only say Gus Van Sant's Elephant and Paranoid Park. Wild Tigers I Have Known too, by Cam Archer.
And is it just me, or was 2001 A Space Odyssey minimalistic?

I also really like (and recommend) The Brown Bunny and Gus van Sant's minimalistic films (Elephant, Last Days). Mutual Appreciation and Songs from the Second Floor are others you should check out.
